  • Found the answer: "Toward the Within was recorded in one take in November 1993 in the Mayfair Theatre in Santa Monica, California and was released by 4AD as an album and a video a year later. It was the last major event to take place in the Mayfair Theatre before it was fatally weakened in the earthquake a short time later and had to be demolished. The video was filmed by Mark Magidson and contains interviews with Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry."

  • Hearing the explanation is like a flashback from Friday night.... wow.

Where is the interview from? Is it available separately?

  • Awful sound!! I love the song, though... But damn, that sound...

  • @Bidumu Ignoramus.

  • me gusta mas la voz de sarah brightman!!!!1

  • I wish I could understand the words!

  • @wonderheart There are no words necessarily. Check out the bands profile:

    Dead Can Dance.

  • How can anyone dislike this??

  • cette femme a une très belle voix a verry beautiful voice

  • jedesmal, wenn ich dies höre,öffnet sich mein herzchakra und ich muß heulen....und es ist mir kein stück peinlich...

  • I really prefer when she songs...

  • Who is Sarah Brightman and what does she do?

  • @moviesitara Isn't she an actress from Hollywood?

  • @Zodist no.

  • I love the way she closes her eyes at the beggining. This is really sung from the button of her soul. An it really touches mine...

  • @PaulaSofiaRamos You need to check out the full clip with the two back to back songs "Tristan/Sanvean". The transition between the two makes it even better.

Yeah, that moment when she closes her eyes... She is really "going somewhere else". ...And bringing back something beautiful and amazing to share with us.

  • @1776Matthew

Yes... that leaves me speechless. Thank you!

  • thank u Lisa... thank you, thank you, thank you!

  • Our inner holy being is closed inside our material body. That being is connected to everything. We are all conneted,we are everything.God is everything, and so we,and everything else is God(and not a bearded old guy in the sky). When the time comes we will all ascend to unitiy again and truly be free, our soul, our spirit will be free. Her voice touches this imprisoned inner being in us and for a moment,it gives us a small taste of freedom that every soul yearns for.All knowledge is within us.Open toit

  • I always felt like a total freak for having an idioglossia (my own language) until I heard Lisa Gerrard. Now I realise it's a gift, and something to be treasured. I just wish I had such an incredible voice too! Lisa Gerrard = out of this world. When we get to heaven I bet it sounds like this or allegri's miserere mei. Much love!

  • She steps out of herself and speaks in tongues. Unreal.

  • Agradecer a Deus por dar condiçoes de me dar audição e ter o previlégio de poder ouvir esta voz simplesmente de outro mundo....maravilhosamente perfeito.

  • This is one of the few pieces of music that goes straight to my heart. I can't explain it.

It's like a lullaby, a farewell to our time here, a hymn to the earthly beauty we must leave behind...

  • @omalmi it is like that... it bids exaltation to the epitome of each moment as the sloughs the music from her soul. In this beautiful passage we feel it like we feel our lives. As brief as a song, as infinite as each moment. More powerful than any evil could possess, it shakes you physically.

  • The final evidence that angels really exist: here we have one of them singing

  • Lisa your voice is wonderfull,is perfect...your sing is deep ,amazing!!!

  • who the hell is sarah brightman. dcd is the song.

  • Yes, Dead can dance the only musical band worth listening to..Fuck all the mainstream shit with no talent and no brain no real meaning in their music.

  • Okay raise your hands

How many of y'all want to see her do a duet with Yoko Ono?

  • i freaking love this woman!!!!

  • This song and her voices make me feel so melancholic and for me express in an unique way all the sorrow that a soul could experience, but in a weird way a pleasant sorrow

  • @mrgatogordo64 I think I understand you :)

  • She's so happy and at peace. Let language grow by itself. Your own language. That is so amazing! I loooove this woman. NOONE compares.

  • still hands down the same mind blowing song I heard many years ago. Unparalleled in music today. lady gaga, take notes.

  • I can't cope with the beauty of this song

  • Her words at the start are just as mesmerizing as her voice.

  • Stunning, brings me to tears every time. True art and power.

  • i heard that song for the first time of the tender age of 15.......

i m 34 and as the years will go by in my life the sensation ...the pain....the tear...will b just undescribable.....

and this unspoken language of them gives me the freedom to believe what i want about that song.....

too bad Lisa had to split the DCD.....Hope they ll find a way to reform them

  • c tro bo snif

  • c'est magnifique

  • No words could ever describe this.

  • magnifica e stupenda...ti trascina con sè e ti porta via.. emozionate !!

  • You all are stupid. Dead Can Dance wrote this song. Lisa Gerrard wrote it. Then performed it. So Sarah Brightman covered the song. And the Dead Can Dance version is 100 times better because it is the original and Lisa Gerrard has a set of pipes...

  • i think shes just great,lovely voice,

  • @rachbobach Maybe they are not stupid. Maybe they just made a mistake.

  • Absolut geile Stimme nice !!!

  • both sarah and lisa's versions are excellent two different perspectives of the same song a contralto and a soprano... i wish they coould sing this together

  • What a friggin moonunit. But their music is good.

  • Her voice is so sweet when she speaks and so strong and moving when she sings ! She's a goddess !

  • le chant de la création

  • It seems like she's speaking to god... or... god speaking to us.

  • you said it!!

  • dead can dance ,music life !

  • this is one song to remember... maybe all life...

i'm from chile... but their music come to this far to be listened....

    ^^

  • i think its a hole trip into beatiful moments of life.

  • i love this song wooow!!

  • In my Opinion, This the best version

    Amazing, Beautiful

  • Damm shes good..

  • i just luv DCD, it doesnt matter which song, they r all BRILLIANT, shame i never got to see them live. DCD 4ever. my favourite will always be the wind that shakes the barley. give birth to my little lad with that song.

  • this song transforms all my sadness into grattitude.

  • blame digital compression, I have a cd of this recording and when I made an mp3 it did the same thing. the acoustic dynamics are too broad for a low res reproduction to capture. beutiful song anyways.

  • Actually im downloading the flac(free loss audio codec) version of all their albums.

u can find it on the torrents

  • great sound! its verry peaceful

  • Its beautiful...the synonymous meaning of her..and her voice. just love it

  • The melody is inexplicably touching and full of mysterious suffering

  • wiederentdeckt und immernoch so wunderschön.. war toll damals, ja.

  • i don't know lisa and brandon, but their music has become a very good friend of mine!!!

  • pırrrr i dead O.o :) love u lisa

  • sind wir nicht alle klein? dann lasst uns gross fühlen...

    liebe grüsse

    aBschied2

  • This is probably my favorite song ever. Lisa is incredible!

  • She is one of my largest influences in my vocal career, totally my kinda gal! Long live Lisa!

  • Lisa Gerrard has THE most beautiful vocals on earth. Love this performance.

  • Oh, wow. Totally disagree with the "fleshy prison" comment. The total opposite. And what places could be more beautiful than Holy Nature? Her music enhances my everyday life and appreciation for Nature.

  • agreed, too much credit is given to things outside what we can touch, feel, and see.

  • Music from heaven...amazing,beautiful voice!

  • nie wiem jak opisac kraine w ktora uciekam razem z nia....za kazdym razem gdy buduje przedemna swoj most z nut dzieki ktoremu moge uciec tak daleko, zostawiajac za soba codziennosc...

  • It's a dream come true.

  • ...9...

  • the way she closes her eyes

    before singing

    beautiful

    so beautiful

  • .....

  • wow her voice is perfect live

  • ...beautíful...

  • Rain in the face.....

  • Just amazing...

  • I bicycled through a small valley in Scotland. Most mystical/rooted place I've been (and I've seen a lot). This unsung song was being in my head. Must return. Thanks.

  • if this tune does not make you cry you are deaf!

  • Actually the tune makes me sleepy. It's not a bad thing though. Ethereal music just makes me sleepy... But I have pleasant dreams so they work like a lullaby. :)

  • I LOVE dead can dance. I've spent more time listening to their music in the last 10 years than any other artist. BUT their interviews are so pretentious, self-obsessed, and hyperbolic I can only stare at the floor..I wish they would release a DVD of only concert footage.

  • Her spirit radiates like the sun and warms my soul....

  • Glossolalia, people.

  • Australians have often embraced their home grown singers, but for some reason Lisa has been criminally ignored.

She is the best singer this country has ever produced.

  • So beautiful !!!!!!! Waouh!

  • wonderfull lisa gerard!!!

  • It quite amazing that Lisa's singing is no known language. And I love what she says in her interview about "how people are desperately trying to find a way of releasing themselves from this fleshy prison & they turn to you when they see you escaping mementarily & ask how did you get out?" My gosh, those words are so beautiful & true for me. ♥♥

  • Another composer/singer who makes up her own language(s) is Yoko Kanno / Gabriela Robin. She (Kanno) doesn't make a great fuss about the philosophy of that approach, though: basically, she uses vocals as instruments, discarding the meaning of the lyrics, but retaining phonetic textures that are typically French, Latin, Bulgarian, etc. The result is a set of unintelligible but very different languages, rather than a single language as in Lisa's case.

  • Thanks GeyserToo. I am very interested & will search for her music.

  • what would this style of music be called??

  • it so beautiful. love her voice just like opaer, also i am hard of hearing, but her voice with mix of rave from Pual O, and love it, i hear this music form `99`s late and 1 day saw about 9/11 and they musix with this and it touch my hearr love you! fianlly to see who are you, wow it so beautiful.. voice sprit

  • so much power and passion, its beautiful..

  • beautiful song!! :'(

  • sound quality on this video doesn't do the song justice.

  • Dead Can Dance is amazing. I've been lucky enough to see them twice. This is by far, my favorite song.

  • It's interesting why there is no other music which comes close to generate such a feeling...

Actually, the only musician where I indeed had smiliar feelings was Keith Jarrett playing solo concerts.

I agree with the others: breath-taking and unbelievable beautiful

  • It does'nt Gotheric. :D

  • awesome, i'm left speechless. What a voice

  • i wanna know everything right now, and i dnt think it involves death.

  • this is why we came ...this is why i strife. the reason that i stay

  • Our deepest memories show us our talent to create something unique on earth.

    Quotes: Alex Mero

    Novel: The Legend

  • She is an Elf! Amazing voice, so soothing and ethereal...

  • wow, something more beautiful than we are ever promised.

  • Her voice, her presentation, her emotion- all exquisite. I just lost my sister in June. An unavoidable death - too young. Sanvean is an expression of the emotions you feel at such a loss.

  • its not tears or sadness its the feeling...

maybe we can do it once...

    just dont feel sad please...

  • Don't want to seem depressing but I have told my wife I want this song played at my funeral service. I think this song is close to God in its delivery and beauty.

  • amazing! i love it!!!

  • Lisa is one of my favorite singers. She is just incredible.

  • Pokaždý když si to pustím,mám husí kůži!Už zase!

  • já též...

  • i já a měl jsem to štěstí, že jsem byl na jejich koncertě v Praze...ale to už je tak strašně dávno...

  • I am a 6'3 grown man and I'm fighting back tears right now at the pure beauty of what I'm hearing.

This is truly what a real talent, character and womanhood is made of.

  • I agree, now this song longer times, but always have tears in mye eyes. Her Voice is Awsome !

  • Maybe there is something about Ear size and big guys with DCD. 1st time i heard DCD was as a tiny preteen , it was very moving ,but i resisted the urge to go 'Brotha Lynch Hung' at school or home, it was hard but maybe I'm too small at 5'9 =D

  • one word, awesome!

  • sounds like a very spiritual puirt a bheul to me... rather sweet and captivating... reminds me a little of the cocteau twins... i used to like them, way back when...

  • That language is the language of the soul

You express your inner feelings such as fear or joy

And because of the fact that these feeling cannot fully be decribed that's why there are not any real words

  • This woman is a genius. Seeing this video and hearing what she had to say at the beginning has made her one of my personal heroes.

  • diva de divas! Lisa, I am your shadow....

  • her voice is so amazing it's almost unbelievable. It takes my breath away every time.

  • I agree strongly.

She is so good, she sounds bad when you don't see her live. My parents got to see them live and my Dad kept saying how her voice was so unbelievably breath taking.

  • definitely one of the best bands ever to exist. I miss 2005's world tour, hopefully they'll tour again. How can she be so magical?

    awesome

  • Brings me to tears everytime I hear it.

But are they tears of joy or Pain I do not know? Probably both at the same time.

    Extraordinary.

  • Righto!

That Actually sounds quite ... hmmmmm '' MotherF*cking Cracka lackin Insane@! '' haha

  • To me it does not matter what language this is ,it's beautiful!

  • what country and language is this music?

  • "let the language grow by itself. your own language."

I'm not 100% sure, but I think she's saying it's not a real language there. It's about the creation of feelings and stories through the sounds. And that's universal.

  • pretty sure she's speaking in tongues.

    -nice though. ehh?

  • beautiful

  • Ela tem razão, quem consegue através da música viajar daquela maneira de certeza que já esteve em sitios que nunca nos foram prometidos...

  • a voz de Deus

  • Amazing voice, sooo beautiful... thanks

  • Amo a esta mujer amo esta cancion me hace reflexionar....Son pocos los grupos con este concepto de musica y con esta calidad.

  • Lisa Gerrard will release two albums this year. Her new solo album ( with Michael Edwards) which is called black opal and a work with the German electronic music pioneer Klaus Schulze. This album will be released in June and Lisa Gerrard will be seen live together with Klaus Schulze on the Prog Festival at the beautiful amphitheater at Loreley in Germany on July the 18th. I will be there.

  • Oh, but we who belong to God are merely sojourners on this earth. We have been promised our true home. This is how the Christian martyrs were able to go to their

horrifying deaths singing and praising God.

I myself was just released from hospital after

being left for dead after being beaten.

I am unrecognisable. And still praising my

Saviour. There is a perfect place...and may

you all find the narrow way that leads to

    everlasting, perfect life.

    Love to you all.

  • Pagans and perhaps Pagan martyrs (burning times approx 26 milllion burned for Witchcraft),also sang/sing in tongues (glossolalia). This is done often during our Sabbat festivals and Esbat circles. "Toning" and chanting from fluctuations within. Native Americans also sing in glossolalia.

Lisa's gift is powerful. She flows with the Celestial Spirit of the Sacred Cosmos.

    Blessed be

  • And to you, CraigWicce.

  • Merry meet CraigWicce

  • Jesus... you were BEATEN??????????????????

I thought you had an accident...

    with someone's fists?????????

This is terrible news to receive in this unexpected way.

  • I wish you well :)

  • Thamk you :)

    Blessings to you and yours

  • Godspeed on your recovery, physically and emotionally. You have been given gifts even though in this time of loss you are in pain.

  • thanks everso, i needed to hear a kind word,

  • Realmente Maravilloso

    Amo este grupo!

  • If she doesn't move you you're dead already.

  • God loves us,so He send Lisa Gerrard from heaven

  • soooo nice!!

  • she is like an angel,i love her music and her singing, amazing,no word to describe her

  • She sing for our soul....Marvellous...

  • BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!

  • i am baffled my her lovliness, and can not put into words.... the beauty she sings from her heart... from the soul of souls... i can only wish to see her one day in person....

  • i saw her in chicago last year at the park west, it was the closest anyone could ever possibly get to the divine...such an amazing experience, it touched my soul and changed me forever...i have been listening to them for a good 12 years or so now, and nothing compares to seeing lisa perform live, it's like watching an angel...there really are no words that can describe the absolute beauty of this woman or her music

  • jestem w niebie

  • andy williams eres mi idolo .....

    maravilloso, sublime ...

  • Dude, I think glossolalia is the samething when you say "she's speaking in tongues".

  • She's Irish-Australian. reckon she gets that voice from her Celtic side... no offence to the Aussies!

  • I find her to be quite lovely in a uniquely angelic way. She intrigues me. What a beautiful soul.

  • Simplemente HERMOSO!!
