@tmoore74 Tom Brady's drive vs the Rams was pretty clutch. John Madden was saying the Pats should take a knee and play for OT since they were inside the 20 and had little time left. Brady took New England down the field like it was nothing and set up Adam V for the winning F/G.
I remember watching this game as a big time Cowboys fan ( at age 9 ). I distinctly remember watching this game and watching this drive at my grandfather's house. I'm watching this game, thinking that if I didn't move, the Cowboys would somehow stop the Niners. Of course, they didn't.
It's funny how San Francisco and Montana broke my heart twice via long TD drives to win the game.. Once in this game as a Cowboys fan. And 8 years later in Super Bowl 23 when my favorite team was the Bengals.
I had no idea that Vin Scully announced some football. I wish I could hear him call one World Series, this past year would have been perfect with him announcing
Many people forget that the game wasn't quite over yet at that point! Eric Wright saved the game with that tackle on Drew Pearson preventing a sure td!!
This was the beginning of an era that produced five Super Bowl titles in 14 years, the greatest QB ever, the greatest receiver ever, the greatest DB ever (Lott) the greatest coach ever, 4 rookie DB's going to the pro bowl, and tons and tons of awesome stars... the list goes on and on. I was at the ONLY SB EVER won by the home team in 1985, Palo Alto, 49ers over Dan Marino, the Marx bros and the Dolphins! What a great time for pro football!
@petesvideocafe 49ers aren't considered a home team. The Raiders were still in Oakland when Palo Alto was first considered, though they had left when the vote occurred in 1982. It's no different than the Rams playing in the Rose Bowl five years previous.
@cbaldwinjr I beg to differ. The rams never won a SB in LA, and the raiders never won a SB in Oakland or anywhere else in the Bay Area. Neither has any other NFL team won a SB in their own city. ONLY the 49ers have won a hometown SB, with Stanford Stadium a mere 20 minutes drive from Candlestick Park. I was there, in that sea of 80,000 wearing red. Never happened before and I doubt it ever will. I understand your envy.
Old meets new. The modern game as we know it today began on that day. The west coast offense, as it became known, revolutionized the offensive game. You can even see here how strikingly current Montana's drive looks with respect to the play calling. For 30 plus years it continues to be refined.
get goosebumps at 12:06 when the announcer says CLARK CAUGHT IT! It was so much more than just a catch; woman in white in the stands with the camera around her neck at 12:09 was visibly upset
That's when the San Francisco rock group Journey watched the 49ers' winning drive. Steve Perry, Jonathan Cain & Neil Schon started yelling out "THROW THE BALL!! THROW THE BALL!!", and yes, Dwight Clark made the leaping catch from Joe Montana's pass into the endzone for winning TD.
@graciemaemarie11 Tom Brady blows..... Joe Montana was the greatest ever, and I've been hearing NFL analyists say that Rodgers is closest to Joe, and may have the best season in NFL history. They're gonna wait til the end of the season. I'm a Niners fan, but Rodgers is impressive.
@TheGibsonman1959 And us 49er fans can thank the great Mike Nolan that Aaron rodgers plays for Green Bay and not San Francisco. Thank the Lord that Nolan drafted Alex Smith instead. Nolan is a genius.
Brady has won 3 Super Bowls. The best QB he beat is Warner. McNabb got to NFC Championship games because Jerry Jones and Daniel Synder are idiot owners. Delhomme a HOFamer?
Which one of those QBs are in the same category as Marino and Elway? Even Esiason ranks favorably with 2 of the 3 Brady beat.
Marino did not win a S.Bowl but he is still better than anyone Brady beat.
@drbayoms Delhomme played well enough in that Superbowl to win it. He's a better quarterback than Esiason and MUCH better than Marino. Marino was by any objective standard grossly inferior to Brady.
In three of his four SBs Montana was never challenged - only in the rematch with the Bengals did he have to bring the Niners back to win it. Again, it's NOT a knock on Montana.
Elway won two Superbowls - no question. But Brady has a slight edge over him.
@Username01793 Agreed. But there's more to QBing than purely passing from a pocket. There's getting it done when it counts the most. He didn't in the biggest moments.
@marquettefootball Montana was the most clutch QB that's for sure. But i don't think that makes him the best or most talented. Using that logic Reggie Jackson is the greatest baseball player ever since he hit all those clutch home runs in October.
@Username01793 Then there's all those clutch HR's Ruth hit in October, too. Though baseball is more a stats game. I still, though, go with Unitas by a smidge over Montana, because of the fact he called his own plays and had as much success. (Not saying Montana couldn't have called his own plays and won like Unitas did, but you don't judge on possibility, but actual body of work.) Still, it's like comparing a Lambourghini and a Ferrari. I'd flip if I had either quarterback.
@marquettefootball Dan Marino had the way bigger arm and threw for 20,000 more yards than Montana. Marino shredded defenses in a era where defensive backs could hang all over wide receivers and linemen could kill the QB. Marino also did it in the AFC East playing a lot of games in windy cold New York, Buffalo, New England etc. Nobody could throw a football from the pocket better than Dan Marino. Too bad he never had a running game. I think he had one 1,000 yard rusher ever
What people have forgotten about this game is if it was'nt for a jersey takedown from behind by Eric Wright the Cowboys would have won this game..I think it was Drew Pearson on a deep crossing route caught the ball in stride and he was clear for the end zone..This game should be shared by Eric Wright as much as by Dwight Clark and Montana as the most valuble play.
@HitsTownUSA Yes I remember that play, If Pearson made another 10 yards on that play and then made a FG, you would have the Dallas fans cheering at the same volume
@HitsTownUSA - Agree 100%. But also, can we forget Dwaine Board's sack and forced fumble of Danny White when the Cowboys were within field goal range with 30 seconds left? What about the offensive line play on those sweeps, clobbering and blindsiding unexpectedly would-be tacklers? How about Coach Walsh's brilliant end-game strategy and getting super-human results from average players? A great team effort.
Thanks Chrisfbal, even tho my team didn't win, I'd love to watch it. I didn't get to see the entire game and no matter who won, it was one of the great games in NFL history.
How cone nobody ever shows the last 51 seconds of this game? I think it is a shame that it never gets shown. I am a Cowboy fan, but still I give the Niners credit for an awesome win. Cowboys were driving the ball down field after this. They were easily, at least going to be able to kick a field go to win. SF Def saved the day for them. If not, it would only be a great catch, not The Catch! Give the 49'ers def some credit for TD saving play and a sack/fumble that preserved the victory.
Vin Scully and Hank Stram did this game for CBS and Jack Buck and Pat Summerall did the radio broadcast for CBS radio But the top production team of Bob Stenner and Sandy Grossman did the game who were with Pat Summerall and John Madden did this game too
Vin Scully is the best announcer of all time. He lets the crowd and the pictures do the talking.
