always thought kournikova was actually under-rated as a player. she had the cerebral, all court game everyone praised hingis for. of course, winning majors helps, lol. still, i remember this tournament. for the row of players she beat just to make this final -- seles, martinez, sanchez, davenport -- using variety it showed she wasn't as one-dimensional as people thought.
@htownhomie06 she was. you're right, she had an all court game but often she'd get frustrated and start spraying balls...playin faster. great comment.
Ana fuistes una excelente tenista, llegastes al top 10 donde pocas llegan y ganas muchos titulos en dobles, fueras ganados grand islam en individuales si no te fueras distraido tanto
@JordanjamesX There are 1200 places on the WTA rankings. Most of those women have never won a WTA title either and there's NOTHING pathetic or disgraceful about it.
the problem with Kournikova is she never improved. her game stayed the same while everyone around her got better and better (i.e. davenport, hingis, the williams sisters, clijsters and henin).
@DIANAROSS4EVER I know!!!! I always thought if she'd won it, naturally, the ball would just keep rollin for her. Wins after more wins. But oh well. She still was an awesome player though. :)
@milot1masha Are you serious? Okay, clearly Venus has a bum knee right here. She's playing at 40% at the most, maybe worse. And Anna STILL lost! C'mon!
@eizyaws blame it on a bum knee whatever. Look at the people winning majors today and anna had a much better game than them. Anna played in the prime of the venus sisters and so many other great players. The competition was so much greater back then
@ajkh888 I don't know that she would win majors today, but she would definitely be top 10. I mean most of the WTA doesn't know what to do when a slice comes at them.
@ajkh888 I agree. In the late 90s early 2000s, the top players of the 90s were still around, Seles, Novotna, Graf, Sanchez Vicario, Martinez, Pierce while new players had also established themselves as leaders on the tour, Hingis, Davenport, or were about to do so, the williamses. That definitely brought more density to the tour.
