  • I read most comments. Most seem political. What a shame. Yes, WW II was a dark time in history which, Hitler and others cause much human tragedy. However, back to this amazing masterpiece. It is not only beautiful in sound, but just watching the entire vid shows the complexity of all instruments and vocals which blend together to create this spine tingling masterpiece.

  • Oh my goodness ... are americans already still believin' that germans are the eternal nazis? ... close Guantanamo concentration camp first and all the wars you begann ... and pay the afroamericans some money for having there relatives in slavery and racial separation ... then we may talk again ...

  • @steffen29966 "Superb!"

  • najo geht so ab mehrere hundert am tag und es is einfach

  • A stunning masterpiece! Deeply touching!

  • soso wie geil hab 3 brüste

  • a masterpiece...speechless everytime.

  • Thumbs up if you heard this song on "The nazi's a warning from history" documentary?

  • hiya wohne in leipzig

  • VLAUSCH... GLAS...

  • awesome piece

  • Wspaniałe... Ciarki Przechodzą :D

  • Such a wonderful piece of music, It makes me love Germany even more. I cannot wait to go back in October.

  • Yet another reason to admire Germany, one of the most culturally sophisticated countries in the world. Their contribution to European culture is beyond articulation.

  • EPIC

  • if this is dying... I am happy to go!

  • my high school choir had the honor of singing this... it brought tears

  • I am performing the Requiem for the first time next Sunday. The more I practice it, the more beautiful and passionate it becomes.

  • this is a wonderful piece of music !

  • I love Brahms even more after being privaledged to perform this beautiful masterpiece

  • Denn alles Fleisch, es ist wie Gras.

That means, all (human) life is ephemeral.

By the way, Brahms has nothing to do with the Nazis, just like all your convicted murderers have nothing to do with the rest of your society.

Whoever thinks that 12 yrs of a terrible dictatorship of not even 10 % of the German society (who suppressed the others) is now the fate of everyone just because he is German, he should start thinking ...

Are we like babies now pointing out at each other finding criminals

  • @Tom8691X Of course Johannes Brahms had nothing to do with the Nazis. He died like 20 years before the Nazi party even existed.

  • @Tom8691X That is propaganda. You were not forced to participate in the slaughterings and there are even many examples of members of the ss who could not properly work in concentration camps and were not punished. No, not all Germans were Nazis, but the majority did exactly what they were told.

  • @MsDicken1 they were blinded by the propaganda machine. hitler came in troubled times, the german people were desperate for a leader, their economy was fucked up and hitler used that weakness to spread propaganda. the shoah was actually nothing but a pr-trick that has gotten out of control, because the men behind it got insane. that germans believed all jews were wicked and evil was no different from the world now believing all germans were nazis. a jew invented the soviet gulaq system.

  • @MsDicken1 ... the british and french build the first concentration camps, the king of england(dont remember which) started one of the first waves of jew persecution in europe, the british bombed cities like dresden not only with bombs but bomb carpets, killing more civilians than soldiers. the red army engaged in mass rape. the army of chad kills their own and their neighbors in darfur. the us prepare for genocide by planting islamophobia and cutting education. watch?v=KAl1i_K_qbY

  • @MsDicken1 but do we judge those nations? no we dont. so grow up and read some history before you judge an entire nation.

  • @Tom8691X thank you, can only aggree, i am german moved to sweden 3 years ago. i get to hear nazi shit all the time. and ironically, my english teacher, who has half a jewish family, is the only one listening without judgement ore interruption to what i have to say about zionists using the shoah to defend the state of israel and deny flaws/silence those who mention them. there is no flawless state, nothing is flawless.

  • Makes me wanna cry... tragic and breathtaking!

  • there also was an old saying, "There are some experiences in life which should not be demanded twice from any man, and one of them is listening to the Brahms Requiem." - George Bernard Shaw

  • Check this version, recorded the 2 feb 2011 !

    youtube.com/watch?v=RJV_RYjq86w

  • Er Guys, I think Brahms was round, way before the Nazi's were! Just proves nothing ever changes!

  • Bravo Gatti.....

  • One of the most powerful pieces ever written.

  • In Saarbrücken blickte mich Sigmund Nimsgern (Baritonsolist) unentwegt an während der Aufführung in der Christuskirche.

Er wusste, dass ich genauso ergriffen war wie er selber...

  • Wonderful... Amazing....

  • Theme fromThe Nazis: A Warning from History

  • @jdmans Yea, because of that documentary's opening now whenever I think of this beautiful piece I always think of that poor manipulated child. I guess it is a good Requiem for a generation that was in fact treated like little more than grass.

  • German: Denn alles Fleisch ist wie Gras

English: Cause all flesh is like grass

  • i love the beginig its so pacefull

  • Das Werk wird am 14.11.2010 um 17.00 Uhr in der Dresner Kreuzkirche

    aufgeführt !

  • @treblefan77 Dres d ner natürlich !

  • I just love the conductor's instruction at 5:14

  • Shaw was just wrong. I love the tone painting in this section. It is a funeral march is the unusual tempo of 3/4 and the drum is constantly menacing in the background. There are no treble instruments or voices in the beginning as they sing "Then all flesh is like the grass, and all the works of man will pass away like the flowers of the grass." Then everyone gets in on the act as they crescendo starting at 2:20. Hear the rain starting at 5:20? Great performance of a wonderful piece.

  • so be ye thankful,,,

  • this is a scary piece of music, like something from a gothic horror movie! amazing!

  • Respond to this video... such a beautiful piece of music

  • ... And the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads: they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away." (Isaiah 35:10)

The Word of God here is WOW... and this music added to it really makes the entire piece breathtaking!

    Thanks for the post!

  • This gives me goosebumps!

Here is the translation to the german text:

"For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away. (1Peter 1:24)

Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain. (James 5:7)

But the word of the Lord endureth forever. (1Peter 1:25)

    And...

  • Look, thats what Germans are!

  • @BaroqueFirma Dramatic? Yes, yes you could say that.

  • @BaroqueFirma Thats what all man is....

  • Everyone has its own taste. But in my opionion this is by far the best interpretation of this part of the Requiem on you tube. Other interpretations are often too fast for my taste. I searched for other interpretations - there are some which have a little bit better sound quality, but no interpretation and pace has got me like this one.

  • I just love this piece!!! Too bad they did not include the second part....love Gatti and his conducting too..

  • Who is the principal oboist?

  • Rubbish. The pieces were there. The leadership wasn't.

  • The Dresdner Kreuzchor will perform that work at November 14, 2010 in Dresden...:)

  • This was used in the opening credits of "The Nazi's: a warning from history" It fits so well, its incredible.

  • I never listen to classical music. I'm more of a trance and heavy metal kinda person. But this... I think I understand now, why it is people listen to classical. This music chills me to the bone in a way that nothing I normally listen to can.

  • Found it!!! Been searching for this amazing piece of music for years! Absolutely beautiful. First heard it on a BBC doc about the Nazi's: A Warning from History, and it chilled me to the bone, but this in no way diminishes or tarnishes the souring majesty of this movement.

  • Wonderful. Uncomparable.

  • is this "Brahms requiem" like the whole thing?

  • @MrCrackbaby9 no, its only like the second movement out of 7. The other are:

"Selig sind, die da Leid tragen"

"Denn alles Fleisch, es ist wie Gras"

    "Herr, lehre doch mich"

    "Wie lieblich sind deine Wohnungen"

    "Ihr habt nun Traurigkeit"

"Denn wir haben hie keine bleibende Statt"

    "Selig sind die Toten"

This is a great interpretation of what I think is one of the greatest works ever written for choir.

  • You can actually see the conducter enjoy the music @ 4:10 and especially at 4:26:)

  • 8:46 - 9:07 Kills me every time.

  • jeder kann sich mal verschreiben lieber MR Soul....einem dann direkt so kindische Kommentare zu senden , finde ich eher albern

  • this is simply....... amazing!!!!!!

  • ein deutsches requiem von brahms müssen deutsche fachvisierte chöre singen

  • es gibt excht schönere aufanhemen.

schaut euch mal die vom windsbacher knabenchor an. besser gehts net.

  • A particular interpretion, i had never heard a so slow "So seid nur geduldig". Anyway i find it's a good musically versione, which one can good appreciate... that's a pity just for the pronunciation of the choir, which i find quite bad.

  • Ein sehr schones ausfuhrung!

  • I heard this in concert once, and the power of the chorus blasted me back in my chair.

  • I like it, this requiem is extremely good. I first heard it on a documentary about WW2 The Nazis.

  • @netcong2 I did too! BBC one right? blew my mind when I heard it.

  • @IocusRood Yes!!!!! Maan that was a great documentary about WW2

  • I like the lyrics :) Are great! Not only being sad and hopeless, there is hope!

  • @EasyAmerica Ganz meine meinung! Es macht mich wahnsinnig wenn selbst professionelle chöre zu feige sind da die emotion reinzupacken die da allein schon von den harmonien her sich jedem laien erschließt.

  • I got to sing this requiem in a community choir. The songs return to me now with such wonderful words (I sang the English translation) and beauty. It is imprinted on my soul forever I think.

  • the words are....not enough! it is a masterpiece, no doubt about it! I had a chance to see this performance at NAC in Ottawa in June 2009. Amazing memories!

  • sry, but there are muh better interpretations!!!

the choirs intonation isnt that good^^

  • I agree. Too much vibrato going on for my taste! :-X

And where is the last part of the song?

  • Wuenderschoen!

  • be quiet and just enjoy the music please

  • Being that Dvorak was an admirer of Brahms, his requiem has some of the same qualities....

  • Didn't mean to "copy" your first line, aubs61. Sorry......

  • Absolutely sublime!!! HOW COULD ANYONE ARGUE WITH HIS GENIUS? The entire requiem is an amazing experience!!!

  • Absolutely sublime. Nothing captures the history of Europe and with it the rest of the Western world in the last sixty years like this.

  • Brahms is a genius. He's last german genius in music. I love this Reguiem.

  • there was an old saying. it went something like. the english own the seas, the french own the land( way back with napoleon) and the Germans, the clouds. the land of dreams.

they weren't unified but man they had culture that no other could compare to. that was their turf. this was once upon a time though.

  • Give the Germans their chance. They were demoralized by WWI; WWII speaks for itself, and they bore the brunt of the Cold War, being split along the lines, as it were. Now that they are back together and whole again, who knows what the future will bring.

  • Well, I'm afraid we're still demoralized by the WW's. But also made stupid by TV, that's why there's nothing like Brahms in Germany today.

"Owning the clouds, the land of the dreams"...

    I like that :-)

Well, this Requiem is really great. And have you noticed the female violin player at the beginning ?

    From about 00:06 - 00:13

    I like her, too ;-)

  • man it was a saying haha. calm yourself. there is nothing nationalist about it either. especially since i said it was a long time ago. it's also called personal opinion. have you never heard someone say. "that's the best" whatever they are referring to is most likely not the best but it's just a way of saying something is awesome. don't take what i say so seriously. it's not nationalist.

  • @raedenjay now the seas are polluted the clouds are radioactive and under the land lies a cesspool of twisted emotions and dark, shamefull secreats

  • @davisbone And in the future will it all even exist for us to see :p

  • @raedenjay well,I think of the future not like death of humans but completeness.Let love melt into memory and pain into music

  • @davisbone Only one way to find out and that oil leak in the gulf of Mexico is a great start!

  • @raedenjay It's a quotation from Heines "Deutschland. Ein Wintermärchen"!

  • @WindKANALminimal ah thanks so much vielen dank!

  • @WindKANALminimal and @raedenjay

Im afraid, You are wrong - it's 1 Peter 1:24 from the bible.

  • @Tiscali1981 wtf are you going on about? I listed a QUOTE. Those are not my words..

  • @raedenjay sorry got a little carried away I guess, didn't realize it was just a quote...

Perhaps I can put some of the blame on the nice French wine I had last night :)

  • @Tiscali1981 Appology accepted but now you need to appologize for not sharing thst wine!

  • @raedenjay Well that's good to hear, was a little drunk last night, this music is brilliant btw, haha never even mentioned the music!!

hehe not sure were you are at but you're welcome! : Poortstraat 75a, Utrecht, The Netherlands :)

  • @Tiscali1981 Well i'm canadian. I'll be in europe from the end of this month to february!

  • @raedenjay Let me know if you're anywhere near Holland! I'll make sure there's plenty of wine and good music!! :)

  • @raedenjay

"There are some experiences in life which should not be demanded twice from any man, and one of them is listening to the Brahms Requiem. "

    - George Bernard Shaw

  • @hentajus what exactly did he mean?

because he finds it horrible? or chilling?

  • @Fabsun the Shaw quote is basically referring to the pace of not only this piece but the whole thing. It is over an hour of music, and a lot of it is solemn, there are some lively fugues but I think the general uninformed impression of the piece is one of slowness and boringness. I admit there's not much liveliness in the piece but there is some. The work does require a little patience - but what classical music doesn't? This music is just too good to disdain even if your name is Shaw!

  • @raedenjay And it was better. The Prussian Union was a disgusting miscarriage, and certainly shook the earth for the worse, both at home and abroad.

  • @raedenjay Nowadays we have crap like Tokio Hotel...

  • @freddychops same language

  • @freddychops and actually, he is german.

  • @freddychops he was born in Hamburg lol. too bad you didn't know that before you posted trying to be a smartass

  • @raedenjay This was partly true and what made for the greatness of Europe. Europe and Germany were so great that an explosion was probable. But, still, this music seems to define expression.

  • this is georgeous

  • This was used on 'The Nazi's-A warning from history'. Fantastic BBC show. Loved it when I first heard it. Political connotations mean nothing to me. Cheers Mr Brahms. Wonderful music.

  • I knew that was where I heard it!

Brilliant program it was too ;)

  • This is creepy. Only a German could come up with this.

  • Actually I have changed my mind. It is growing on me.

  • Brahms Requiem is one of those pieces where it is far more rewarding to preform it than to listen to it!

  • I strongly disagree. Brahms Requiem is a profound listening experience.

  • I agree but, I think its much more satisfying to preform it. You get to know the music on a deeper level than the listener.

  • Well, I am not a performer, but I imagine that what you say is true. I interpreted your first comment to mean that Brahms Requiem is not so rewarding to listen to, but now I see what you mean.

  • This is such powerful music, you should go see it used in the new Norwegian flick Max Manus, one of Norwegian films finest moments..it got so many other great parts too.If I somehow died I would have this played in my funeral..(morbid I know, not meant that way lol)

  • Not often you get to let rip like this in a choral work, and it feels amazing. This has reminded me it's about time I got back into choral singing properly. Thanks!

  • impactante

  • Fantastic. This is probably my favorite Requiem and certainly my favorite movement from it.

  • Wow. Brahms, (and most composers) think on a level far beyond what most of us can even begin to comprehend... imagine sitting down and trying to write something like this on a score...

  • This is the greatest requiem there is, superior even to those by Mozart and Verdi... My absolute favourite part is when the horns enter at 2.26.

I'm soon of to a church to experience it live and I can barely wait for it!

  • Try Dvorak's Requiem also...

  • Prolly one of the most balls to the walls 10 seconds ever. 3:00 to 3:10

  • Can I tell you how much it makes me happy to hear someone describing classical music with the phrase, "Balls to the wall"?

And you may well be right, by the way.

  • I totally agree! I love the build-up in the orchestra from 2:30. I also love the middle of movement 6 when the chorus is screaming at death "Death, where is thy sting?" ("Tod wo ist dein Stachel?").

  • major shivers at 3 mins!

  • 3:03 is killed by youtube's terrible quality

  • This was the my favorite movement to sing. Well, and any time the altos got to shiiine. =)

  • Dies Irae I think refers to Judgment Day when God Resurrects the dead in order to see who goes to Hell and who goes to Heaven... I wish this had spell checker on it.

  • Dies irae = jour de colère.

  • is Brahms a genius or a God?

  • I'm surfing the web to find clips of Brahms' Requiem because I'm singing it next week - with Kiri te Kanawa as soprano soloist!

Although I've sung many other choral works, I've never done this so I want to learn it properly.

It's very helpful to see and hear what it sounds like to an audience. I'm in an amateur choir (none of us get paid - in fact WE have to pay to belong to it!) and for us to get this chance to sing with such an amazing star is - literally - a once in a lifetime event.

  • I have a CD with her in Don Giovanni! Wonderful voice! Im jealous.

  • It took me a whole week to come back down to earth again after that concert - AND I managed to get her to autograph my score after the rehearsal :)! She was wonderful and she's so NICE - no prima donna tantrums with her at all.

  • My favourite section of the Requiem, it's absolutely lovely to sing with that brilliant orchestra behind you. A true masterpiece.

  • In Music school they gave us a congrats lapel pin. for making it through this song
