Expressed dog anus juice is considered a delicacy in Sri Lanka, believe it or not. It's not uncommon to find it served as a condiment with artisan breads at fine eateries, similar to a chutney or pate. I had a friend who tried it once and said it's actually quite delicious when prepared correctly.

Think I'm lying? Just google "castoreum", which is a similar juice extracted from beaver anal glands to flavor vanilla icecream. Enjoy :)

Plus I'm in school for vet tech and the other girls I've talked don't use gloves either. You don't need them when you are expressing a dog in the tub and then bathing them afterward...

@KitaDyer It depends on the dog. My dog never needed his anal glands expressed for the first few years that I had him. In the past 6 months, however, he has needed it done at LEAST once every month. You can tell when they need it done, they will scoot their butts on the carpet often and will want to lick that area constantly. My dog gets to the point where he licks the area raw...

I work as a vet tech, and at a groomer's on the side. This is necessary. Dogs used to naturally be able to, but as they are domestic, they cannot. Ruptured anal glands are not pleasant, my friend. I hope your dog NEVER happens to get this condition. :\ (Also, the vet likely does this when it goes in for a checkup, you just didn't notice. XD)

because not all dogs need it. I was just learning about this in school. Dogs usually express there own while they deficate. But if a dogs become impacted they cant. So it is the choice going to the vet and having the expressed and somtimes removed. OR waiting until they expoded and it is a more costly surgery and your dog is in EXTREME amounts of pain. I just hope your dog never need this, Goldensgirl1 you would probably let your dog suffer and die rather then fix the problem.
