The Diatonic thing is per octave, right? I have a ton of trouble memorizing my scales for piano, and I have to take a test for the American Piano Guild. or whatever it's called.
Enjoying the series, but just a note: the term "natural" was introduced in this video without a definition. I know you wanted to go through things slowly so I thought you'd want to know.
... quote: "if you have no b flat, b or b sharp you've made a mistake."
i'd say if you have no b sharp, you're at least part right.
why? well, i, (and professional musicians, which includes mike) usually refer to b sharp as C. but the big question is, why am i watching this video? i already know how to play the piano properly... XD
@alivini96 Not true. In C# major, you have no C's. You have B#'s. In the key of F#, the raised 4th is called B#, not C. Otherwise it's not a fourth. They are not interchangeable, even with ET tuning.
Could you eventually explain the Circle of Fifths? I've tried explaining it to my non-musician boyfriend before and cannot do it for the life of me but you are amazing and wonderful at explaining things in understandable terms sooooo do it pls? :)
I taught this to my younger sister about a month ago and because the idea is so simple she was so proud of herself when she could do it. I really suggest using this method.
I love this channel. I'm a music student and have been doing this kind of thing for years but I just started doing some teaching. I noticed when I began teaching that there were some things that I had a hard time explaining because it's something that I've always understood so easily. Seeing something be explained from a different point of view really helps me think of things in another way so I can better explain them to my students.
I'm in a beginning piano class this semester and these videos are very helpful. Could you go over chords (I, IV, V, V7, or whatever) and how to invert them, or if they're already inverted how to tell what chords they are (like G/B for example)?
great video mike!

@srslyveronica Not sure what you mean. There are only 7 letter names on the piano, A-G and every major scale uses one of each.

Although I'm a music major and have known this for years, I really enjoy watching you teach it. Way to be fantastic!

I think I've always known this subconsciously. I can play the Circle of Fifths on the piano without thinking about it.

And to think, I took piano and theory lessons for seven years and my teacher never told me what "diatonic" meant. Thanks, Mike. :)
