HDH aka Holland Dozier Holland were truly genius that backgroup was beautiful and fit for Mary and especaily Florence and what beautiful Lyrics Diana delivers
and in my personal opinion after Florence and then the HDH team left the group wasnt the same at all!
When a list is comprised of the best Supremes songs why do I never see "I hear a symphony" This is without a doubt one of their best and definitely one of Diana's best vocal performances.
I love this performance by the gurrrls . . . . also love the unique orchestra setting . . . . frozen in time . . . Diana, just can't take your eyes off her . . .
@paul51 Check out Flos notes on 2:42-3-4 and the arms raised palms out..chk out dianes arms up palms up..even marys arms raised. that is a Supremes Move. lol..but got to admit..Flo is blowing the hell out of that last note..wow..i really wish she had help on the alcohol.and didnt have such a bitter break up from motown. she did have a good voice..but bad timing. imagine if she had waited until diane left.and came back. or just waited. Diana was leaving.anyone could see that right here.
i always wonder how flo would have fared during the hits and especially this song. as the repeat backgrounds you can hear flo's range. i like her soprano notes
I feel like everyone else..it's an Motown milestone....they ruled the airwaves when I was a kid....the 60's were the best time for music..wish I had seen them live!
their harmonies were pretty tight at the end there. i never noticed their harmonies and hight notes till lately. i viewed that they studied to opera singers
They did this so Beautiful. Wish we still had groups like this around today. I know the times have to change but sometimes it is not always for the best. They were a Great Group. Always will be.
@SinclairisCool 1.) Why does it have to be "African American" women? 2.) They don't have the music writers, or directors with enough talent to write songs like this anymore, 3.) The recording companies/labels are in financial chaos, and refuse to take chances on anything that isn't formulaic, and a "sure thing." 4) There is no longer any "7 album" deals in the music industry. If you don't have a million plus seller first out, your toast!
@jsbach15 "There is no longer any "7 album" deals in the music industry. If you don't have a million plus seller first out, your toast!" complete lie. Look at Flo & The machine. They didn't have a million seller in there first week. But anyway, thats beside the point. I said "Three African American Woman" because, lets face it, there are two many white people on the market. And, it would be authentic
that curtsey....SO CUTE.....thank GOD DR didn't let anyone MESS with her style: big mouth, wide eyes....arm gestures....LOVE IT...LOVE THE SUPREMES!!!!!!!!!!
Although I have made what my be observered as negative remarks on other sites pertaining to this group- There is no misunderstanding that these are in fact the one and only Supremes. Not DR & the, but the one and only- SUPREMES.
I saw this the first time when I was 12. God I loved this group then and I love them now. I agree with kurtzupreme, what else can you say but "BEHOLD THE LEGENDARY SUPREMES."
Remember when we flew North Central Airlines in the olden days and in the brochure it said "welcome to Michigan - the home of the Tigers and the Supremes?". That came to mind watching this.... Michigan has always been proud of the Supremes.
Music was music then, and there was no song greater than this one. The Supremes were the tops, and Diana Ross' voice is like no other in history. The best!
MAN oh MAN. CHRISTMAS 65 i believe. THIS song!!! did they KNOW how EXCELLENT it is? did they KNOW of its BRILLIANCE in every way? have to say YES, because MOTOWN did not believe in mediocrity. and thank GOD for that: for raising the bar. thank GOD just like the crescendo in THIS song that rises HIGHER & HIGHER we never have to forget that there was a time when EXCELLENCE was encouraged, welcomed and EXPECTED. LONGGG live MOTOWN!!! gotta say it: i LOVE the SUPREMES but DIANA ROSS is the BEST!!!
I love this song too, except for the line "I cry not for myself but for those who never felt the joy we felt". When you're in love, you don't worry about others feeling the same thing as you, everybody feels their own thing. // It's funny, the orchestra isn't playing.
There is nothing wrong with that line because it actually means that there was an enormous amount of joy in the love that she feels others should have the same joy which is why she crys
Is that Flo on the high note at the end? She definitely had some chops. She easily drowns them out. Are there any other songs where she brings her voice out like that?
for her it was a NORMAL note xD if you ever heard her at the end of "not no I'll tell you later" together with the temptations at the end it was amazing
or at the ballad "(Let Me Hear You Say) I Love You"
i like the symphony in the backgropund but i think they should have played the whole song. but cool set and at the end i had the feeling they were trying to make it look like an opera after the end note and the flowers

One of their better songs. And not the usual record version but with the sax, a bit jazzed-up. Very nice.
