learned to ignore the Norman Invader, Bidin our time, in the English way, the way of the Angli, till OUR day comes, as it most surely will, OUT! OUT ! OUT! OUT! OUT!
This song is brilliant. The lyrics are more relevant today than they were when it was written. All the peoples of the world have hard times and England is no exception, as not everyone is wealthy. This song is obviously dedicated to the poor folk who had to struggle to put food on their table during the hard times of both war and peace. Yes, I've been drinking.
Horrible, HORRIBLE track from a Horrible, HORRIBLE album. Steeleye at their worst - every track to a jolly 3/4 beat that sounds like an elephant bouncing on a trampoline.
The only thing worth listening to on the whole thing is 'Cagwith Anthem'. Oh, and Peter Knight's violin solo on 'Dance with Me'. The rest is an over-produced, under-arranged mess aimed at the charts with no respect for the music whatsoever.
@scgrimsley - This song was originally sung by working class songsters in response to the way the establisment (the right my friend) was mistreating the country for their own ends at that time. Nothing changes except fascism is new and judging from the effect of national socialisim in germany on the people of that country they do not represent the people:- but any other tin pot demagog eloquent enough to seize power. Luckily you don't use english well enough to qualify for that place in hell.
@greenbluefish The 'establishment' is now ranged across three 'main' parties and all espouse the suppression of the English and their culture. The Marxists/liberals have done more damage to the English folk than the 'right' ever did.
since my high school days maddy and the gang always did it for me. in upstate new york today we hit a high of 65 and bright sun...rare for ithaca ny. but i had steeleye span blasting as i worked in my tulip garden...37 years later...maddy's voice can alway make me smile
Yes mate, Maddy sure makes ya feel mgood to be alive! Hope your tulips are a picture. I am off to Engalnd in a week and looking forward to the pleasures of the olde country, by the way, its 85 and we've just had some lovely autumn rain here in Victoria, Australia. Cheers
@vazmo14850 Coincidentally, vazmo, it's 65 and sunny in Minnesota today and I've just finished listening to Steeleye Span rock their way through "Hard Times"...and I'm still smiling. How are your tulips this year?

@gaspode18 Except for this track , which is in 4/4 swing time.

@MilesB1975 Um...yeah, OK, the criticism breaks down there. It's still my least favourite Steeleye album.
