Though this movie is kinda bad I understand what Robbie is going through. He played Mazes and Monsters before when he was a kid and it was exciting compared to his bleak life like the rest of the characters. However when he started LARPing with them, he inadvertently made his dream come true of living in the game. The darkness of the cave and the suggestion of a monster was the last break causing him to stay. His breaks in sanity are caused by the guilt he feels when he thinks he harmed someone.

I remember when this Mazes and Monsters TV movie when it came out - I was in jr. high. All us D&D geeks were appalled at the way they tried to make the kids with the highest GPAs in school look like gullible idiots. It took nearly another 10 years before I could take Tom Hanks seriously.
