That's partly because in the event of an aborted takeoff and evacuation, due specifically to a fire, they don't want any glare from artificial light to confuse passengers as to what side the fire might be on.
The sound of the three engines on the MD11 and DC10 will certainly be missed. Also I miss the takeoff, lumbering down the runway getting to what cockpit says V1Rotate, and V2, and then seeing how slow we are actually rotating, then climbing, from passenger window. Have yet to fly the A330 and 340. That's what Finnair flys now. Hopefully these videos will remain here.
I went to Osaka with a MD11 of Finnair. It's a noisy but very comfortable plane. And the Finnair's crew is very nice (sorry for my lousy English, I'm Swiss)
@speedomaniac00 When it comes to McDonnell-Douglas planes, I prefer the MD-11 to the DC-10 due to the number of major air disasters involving the latter. Except for the ill-fated Swissair Flight 111 on Sept. 2, 1998, there have been less accident/incidents involving the MD-11 than the DC-10. Overall, the newer MD-11 seems to be a major improvement over the DC-10 in my opinion.
The flaps will remain in T.O. position until the aircraft begins to speed through the retraction speed following acceleration height (usually between 1,000 and 1,500ft). It is also possible that this aircraft was flying special procedures for noise reduction- which would prolong the initial climbout. How long this takes depends on, among other factors, the weight at T.O. (TOGW).
rare footage, the passenger variant of the md-11's are very rare, but when i went to Hong Kong last summer, i saw at least 2 dozen MD-11 freighters from UPS and FeDex, i even saw about 4 DC-10's in Fedex liveries too. I didn't see any in the passenger terminal though.
I went on one of JAL's in 2001 from Naritta to Dallas, very fast plane :). We left 30 minute late and arrived on time the speed display was showing over 1000 km/h most of the time
It was in 2001 when I went, but it definatly sat on over 1000 most of the way there. I've read quite a few other people on forums had the same experience. The landing at Dallas was HARSH, it was very windy and I could see all the baggage compartments flex quite alot, fast plane/bendy plane :)
Then how can it land in Dallas on time?, they were still fixing the plane for at least half an hour past when it was supposed to leave Narita airport :). Pretty sure we didn't time travel :)
It is absolutely possible to cruise at +1000km/h on many big aircraft. the indicated speed on the passenger monitor is ground speed (GS) - it can vary depending on the winds. Pilots only have to pay attention to the indicated airspeed (IAS) which is actually air resistance - on most jet aircraft at more than 330knots some parts may be damaged.. but having good tailwinds, the airspeed may be low, though the ground speed being huge..
I was lucky enough to fly on the Finnair MD-11in Feb 2007 from HKG-BKK. OH-LGF when I went and was a real joy considering that once AY convert and sale all there aircrafts off, The only airline left will be KLM. Great aeroplane and visually has so much charactor compared to the Boeing/Airbus...Great video and engine noise from the GE's. Thanks
Man what a nice takeoff...good sound of engines, good video, good quality...good plane. My last MD-11 Flight will be next year July with Finnair to Bangkok.
The DC-10/MD-11's landing gear and wing structure are quite weak, and both can break off during hard landings. (ala Martinair 1992/Fedex 1997/CI 1999) It can cause the plane to flip over.
crossfire, airworthiness directives have been issued for these door glitches and the problem is not an issue, MD-11s are an excellent aircraft to fly, a shame shotty maintenance has marked this fantastic aircraft.

finnair has very old and venerable aircraft.not the safest airline. the DC-10 and MD-11 have had the most cargo hold door failure reports ever. not that very safe of an aircraft.
crossfire294, with respect, you're wrong. Finnair is one of the safest airlines in the world with quite a young fleet and a maintenance regime that is up to the strictest EU standards. MD-11s were in production until quite recently and the cargo door failures you refer to happened 35 yrs ago. The MD-11s flying today have nothing in common with that early, faulty design. Other world class airlines such as KLM keep using them too.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
im saying what your saying. yet they have old aircraft, this may or may not be a problem, they meet the strictest EU standards. just my opinion.but, i hardly fly on international airlines.
Please do some research. Finnair has not had a fatal DC-10 or MD-11 accident. Secondly, the DC-10's cargo door design was changed 30 years ago. And this particular MD-11 was built in 1994, really old? I think not.
Mikko! KLM, Martinair and World Airways also use the MD-11 for passenger traffic today. No Russian airline uses them nor has ever used them.
Posting that "no spare parts available the plane will fall down any given day" thing is just incredible, but could well be a perfectly YouTube compatible statement.

Hi! I was on Finnair MD-11 last week doing the Helsinki-Bangkok and back! I had great Crew and the MD-11 is fantastic. It's not older then the newest B-747-400 from begin 90's!
then you'd be dead three weeks! MD11 is one of the oldest long haul aircrafts, built on the technologies from 1970s, NO other western airlines fly them any more, Russian airline is one of the few airlines still flying them. The point is that MD11 will fall down from sky some day soon, there is almost no place to find the repair parts of the plane...
Then you haven't tried other airlines! Finnair uses one of the oldest air crafts, and service staff often too proud of themselves to serve passengers who actually pay their salaries. Finnair charges more more for Finnish passengers who fly directly from Finland than those far away passengers such as Italy and Spain, they pay 20% less with an additional connecting flight from Finland. And you think Finnair is the best?1? You must be sick!

Perfect example of the OEM deflected aileron option upgrade - only one i could find on youtube this video is unique for that - cheers
elfling 2 years ago
what is a deflacted aileron?
thedefiantrebel 2 years ago
The aileron droop on the trailing edge - it increased stability, MTOW and TO performance [dial flap 28 instead of 25] etc
Airbus uses this system on the A330/340's too
elfling 2 years ago
so theyre a bit like flaps?
thedefiantrebel 2 years ago
Bingo...but it's not flap actuated, it's commanded by the flight computers i.e.. it's fly by wire, and only in TO config
