  • "Written by some guy" made me lol

  • awesome tutorial!! im a design student at CCS i think this will really help with my speed skills im glad i found these videos you got some really good skills man haha

  • @NessCreates speed painting*

  • i would like to know how can you blend/mix the old paintin to new one .. and what are the brushes you used :)

  • I know this has probably been asked a few times but where did you get that crystal brush?

  • Could you please share does brushes?!

  • where do you get such a big color palette O_o

  • this is so inspirational... being self taught, I can't get enough of these videos....my only problem is that my computer can't handle really high res images....and I have no problem staying up all night to perfect an idea, even though that project isn't making me money, it's all about getting better

  • @lltffd i'll buy you a computer. when's your birthday?

  • you are helping me so much even without the fundamentals... cheers.

  • These videos are fantastic thankyou guys so much, watching them really helped my work and my approach, and now I have more clients and more fun work!

  • When you said that "hiring a concept artist to do the illustration instead of a prof illustrator would be much more expensive" what did you mean exactly? Do concept artists get paid more for their work than the illustrators(i am talking about working hours) This is important to know and take under consideration from the get go. Thx

  • dude ur ideas are legendary.........get me to that thinking curve!!

  • I take it design cinema is over.........

  • @charlie6330

Fret not, we will continue the Design Cinemas and the new ones will be uploaded soon.

Thank you for supporting FZD School Youtube channel.

  • @FZDSCHOOL mr feng can i send you my first digital paintings to tall me your opinnion?i graduated an art highschool, but i want to make concept art and the computer and the softs are quite new for me.If yes, where can i send you the paintings?

  • hey feng! could you do some interior speedpaints from scratch?

  • Feng im 13 years old and im finding these video's very helpful. I was wondering how old people need to be to get into these kinds of schools. I was guessing the age to be around 18 but i was hoping you could tell me.

  • @obioneshinobi123

The minimum age required to join the full-time Diploma in Industrial Design program is 16 years old and above. There’s no age limitation as long as the person has the passion to learn and work in this industry. However, as the program is very intensive, it requires the applicant to be physically and mentally fit. Feel free to email us if you have additional queries.

  • @FZDSCHOOL Thanks very much.

  • @FZDSCHOOL I admire your honesty ^_._^

  • Hi I hav question! Many Ppl told me not to move on to digital before I conquer the analogue method (means sketch on paper)

Just wondering that How Fengzhu Design School teach this??

  • hey Feng great Tutorials!! i learn a lot from every single one.

    I've got two questions:

    1. is it possible to do the concept art work if you'r from an Illustration school ( or is it better to do something else( a different education) if i want the easiest way to get to the concept-art industry??.(i'm currently 17)

    2. Can you show an underwater seen (Deep ocean kinda thing)

    Thanks a lot

    love you video's.

  • I hope the more videos are coming as You said mr. Feng, so I'll be patient ; ]

  • Hey everyone. Sorry for the lack of update. It's because we are currently hiring a new video editor, and it's taking a while to get all the paperwork done. But don't worry, more episodes are coming.

  • @Fengdesigns Thanks for the update bud. was getting worried there for a sec. :)

  • HI feng. I know you are probably very busy. BUt i got to say that i loooooove your tutorials and i was wondering when are u going to come up with a new one.. It been a month now. Sorry if i sound rude. That is not my intention. It's just that i want to know if you are going to come up with new ones or maybe your done. I dont know.

OK, hope u are doing fine.. Which im sure u are. Have a nice weekend. goodbye

  • One question i have is throughout the designs of landscapes you say you are adding atmosphere to the image using a large brush and going over top of the image. When i watch it it looks as if you are painting under the foreground of the image and was wondering how this is done and what is used to achieve this effect?

  • When is the new video going to be released????

  • Hi Feng and company, really gagging to see episode 47..........

  • One question in particular. Throughout all of your videos even from the very first ones that I started watching over six months ago you use a "volumetric lighting" brush in every piece.

I would like to create this brush but without really understand the values or demographics behind the behavior of the brush it's rather difficult 2 just create it from scratch.

I use 2-3 brushes as you advised but this is one brush I wish I had to really give my paintings some punch during final rendering.

  • Hey Mr. Zhu in this video you had mentioned that sometimes concepts and layouts get outsourced to art studios to do polished paintings/renderings. I was curious as to which art studios they usually outsource to, is it usually fine art studios that have an artist the company is familiar with, or are there art studios set up specifically for taking on and polishing entertainment artwork? I'm curious because when I searched art studios in, say, California, I get mostly fine art studios.

  • Thanks for the comments everyone. Sorry for the lack of updates...but it's coming. Got lots of stuff planned for Design Cinema in the future as well.

Regarding best monitors: I use Apples at home, but at work, I've been using the Dell 27" - however, they are not cheap. Whatever monitor you choose, get the IPS versions (they usually cost double).

The 3d effect was done by our motion graphic artist in After Effects.

  • your the man FENG.. i spent $80,000 at Art Institute for crap and wasted 4 years.. you have taught me so much just from your youtube videos!!!! i would pay for even more depth videos and just hear you talk about the industry.. so inspired

  • Great video!

  • what's the best book for studying fundamentals?

  • I like how you talk fast :D

  • Nice. Your one of the few people here were I would actually sit though the whole thing and not skip parts to get to the end.

Question.... umm.. how did you get the spheres at the end to animate the color change?

  • nice tutorials, is easier to see these videos than pay 30,000 € to get your certificate xd

  • Thnx so much for great teaching and wonderfull presentation

  • I wish I could settle for one hobby and maybe turn pro in it and make it a living for myself lol. Just exhausting with how competitive everything is. Awesome video though. Helps understand how to be a digital artist. Just throw down value and see where it goes.

  • WOW! neat effects in the end! Faux 3d and all :)

  • great job of painting here. Would you say a concept artist gets more money than a illustrator or was it relatet to the time of work the person has to spend on the job?

looking forward to new cool videos!

  • The mountain on the right looks like Poseidon.

  • Hi Feng! Love these tutorials! I appreciate so much that you spare your time to do these. Do you think can do some tutorials how to do line sketch in photoshop for environments like interior design or more man-made environment like your old star wars design sketch?

  • Hi FZDSCHOOL. I am very young at this time. Yet, I was wonering, In your school, Is there a shading class? I dont like to draw, But I LOVE to shade. Also Where is your school. Im new to your Video's. So im not very clear on this stuff. Back on the other topic, Do you think you can post an episode of "How To Shade". Use a pencil. Print out one of your drawings and show us how to shade in black and white. I would love that. Thank you if you read this comment. Also Good Vids. Keep up the good work.

  • @rttwww00 Make a new layer filled with black , and set the blending mode to saturation. Then, Im not really sure but i think he doesnt usually paint when checking values, he is more like using dodge and burn to get values up/down. Hope it helps!

  • without FZDSchool, i would draw only smileys...

THANK YOU FZDS!!!! YOU'RE GOD WITH BRUSH

  • I'd get that book just for the cover...

  • "Written by some guy"

    Love the book covers!

  • You make it look so easy mr. Zhu, and the ending result always look stunning. But I don't have a clue how to create and use similiar brushes to get same results. Another thing I just can't control are the colors. Would it be a cool idea to create a video about that? I'm sure alot of people, me included, would love to see a video about how to pick the right colors to create a right looking atmosphere.

Thanks alot, and I can't wait till you show us your next video.

  • im really thankfull for your videos here on youtube Zhu :-) your paintingphilosophy is great i love it!! Do you use the same dpi setting on your every paintings? when yes what do you recommend? or you just leave it on 72dpi as default?

  • @bazsinator12 I'll cover your question in more detail in the Q/A. But basically, DPI is useless today for digital painting. I use a DPI of 1.

  • @Fengdesigns Your Videos are very awesome! It really helps me.

Have you any Tips for a good Photoshop Preference. So I have a good workflow. Some Like where to Move the Color, and the Brushpreferences etc.

    Greetings from germany! :)

  • @Fengdesigns Hey feng can you name the best monitors apart from the apple monitors? Because they are too expensive for me.

I also want to say that these tutorials are very helpful too me so thx.

  • @bazsinator12 DPI is only relevant when you set your canvas to cm, mm, inches and so on. It's only useful for print. When you make a canvas of let's say 1000x1000 px, 72 DPI would be the same as 300 DPI. However, if you would make a canvas of 10x10 inch, 72 DPI would have less pixels, than 300 DPI.

  • Where can I get a replacement Wacom Pen? I've lost the entire pen... and I'm not sure where to go to get a new one. Any answer is appreciated.

  • @SuperCorey95 Just go check Amazon. I bought a replacement stylus there for $30.00 .

  • @SuperCorey95 you can buy a knew one directly from wacom's site

  • favourite concept artist along with frank frazetta, learn so much when they share methods of working like this :)

  • You make my day Zhu, mate. Sorry but after 46 videos of yours i feel as I known You personally :) Keep up this project alive it makes, so many people leveling up and happy. Bless

  • @FeatheryWonders Photoshop CS5

  • i timed it and feng says about 50-60 words per second

  • To answer your question... yes I DID get quite a bit out of this, so thank you!

I am one who is more prone toward the ultra detail side of things. Not saying I can make a photo realistic picture... but that is where I focus.

So, there is great value in what you are showing here.. plus the actual quality of the 'finish' product is still so high that it helps to back off a bit from doing every little detail and more about doing more in less time.

  • Does anybody know how you make you brush palette appear like Feng does (detached from the top menu).

Should be easy, but I've been tryng to figure it out and I don't get it.

  • @rosso2500 I don't use Photoshop but it will probably be: File > Open as layers (or something like that)

  • what drawing tablet do you use ????

  • Feng, you said that using someone else painting is not legal, and i get it, but you say that even for extracting values. Now, not saying i'd do that, but doesn't seem illegal to me to pick values from a painting, they are just colors and there are COMMERCIAL tools that would make a palette out from a picture for you, so maybe you can expand on that; maybe do an episode on copyrights and similar stuff, as you did for portfolio etc that are "practical" or maybe better said "management" lessons.

  • @lvldsnr Yes, good question. I'll address this in the Q&A. :)

  • whoa how did u do that animation thingy in the end :D

  • @blitzritz It's called parallax animation. I've been researching on my own how to do it for a few months now, but I haven't quite figured it out yet. At least, I haven't figured out an efficient means to do it. Essentially, you can think of it as video editing in layers, although, it is slightly more complicated than that, especially if you're doing really nice quality stuff.

  • @RaiceGeriko When you have a layered image, is a matter of panning those... the most difficult thing is probably finding the right speed to prevent the watcher to feel "sea sick".

I've no experience in doing that on Premiere or that kind of stuff, but my teammates implemented it in the 2D videogame we are developing for smartphones.

  • @lvldsnr Right - that's the difficult way to do it. The other way to do it is to build some flat shapes in 3DS or something, and then paste 2D images onto them as textures (like a mountain of trees or the outline shape of a character.) Then you import those into Aftereffects (I think) and you place the 3D objects in different planes, so that the camera, when you move it, creates that same parallax effect - and the speed of the panning is always exact, because only the camera is moving.

  • I know this sounds mean, but I can't help but laugh every time someone asks "WHAT KIND OF BRUSH IS THAT? CAN I HAVE IT?" when the artist already said what kind of brush he's using in the video.

  • @MayuZane I think everybody is talking about the brush he uses in the very beginning. The one that kinda lookes like an upside down spider.

  • Always great info in these. Thanks again for posting them up.

  • i love the pseudo-3D pans at the end!

  • I have a question for you Feng. If you learned industrial design when you went to college, how did you get into entertainment design? Is that part self taught?

  • please give us that brush! i need it and its not in my dry media brush set :(

  • written by some guy

  • thank you for this new video. It's very informative, like always. And thanks for talking about how the market works. Something you could address on another video is if the concept art market differs too much from one country to the other (Europe vs US vs Asia, for instance) and how it differs. Best wishes!

  • What brush does this guy use? i need it!

  • These videos are not only educative but also entertaining. Thanks for posting them.

  • UGH i hate watching these right when they come out D: i cant have my fzd marathons anymore

  • Thank you so much!!! very nice of you. i was checking my email every few hours to see if any new videos! iam one of those 30+ years old. i dont understand much about freelancing, any one knows how that works?

  • I LOLed at the " written by some guy "

  • 1:16 grabs a feng zhu painting and slaps it in.... 1:31 deletes painting.

  • Thank you so much for taking the time to upload these videos. They make my day!

  • Many thanks! I got my inspiration boosted again.

  • My god!! This is amazing!!!! o_O

  • great work! I thought the right image was much stronger. Much more atmosphere and story compared to the left. Also you talked abit about freelancing, whats a good way for someone whos starting out to get freelance work?

  • *logs in to youtube*

    YESSSSSSS

  • how do you create atmospheric fog i have tried so many different techniques in photoshop and cannot seem to do it

  • I don't see that many book covers finished to this level, really fantastic job here.

  • I've been checking everyday since the last one, made my day today to see this in my subscriptions. I look forward to every one of these thank you feng

  • fucking perfect...

  • Hey feng I am currently using a wacom bamboo fun medium. Do you think that I should upgrade to the intuos?

  • @H3llHoundd If you have the money to burn, otherwise no. There's no need, your Wacom is fine.

  • I know this question might drown into all the comments coming up but: I'd hope to get some advises on how to make your own color pallet. I see you use yours and it's personal which is very understandable. So I'd like to make my own but not sure how to start things up, how to build the colors so they match etc.

Also thank you Feng for posting these tuts. It's really awesome to watch and learn

  • @XFuturnalX If I were you I would study color theory. It's a little intimidating at first but it's not that complicated. There are a couple very good dvd's you can get at Gnomon.com. Having a deep understanding of anatomy, perspective and color takes some time, but it's a must, and will have the greatest impact on your speed in the long run. Good luck!

  • I check every single day to see if a new video has arrived. And when they do, I Hammer dance.

  • @SuperGamer87 subscribe and get that by email! ;)

  • @lvldsnr I am subscribed, and I check for the emails (when I'm not too scared to open my emails--like a stuffed closet, and I'm too lazy to use the filters). I still like to visit the channel, though. It adds to the Channel Views, and while I'm there, I usually play a video running the background to listen to while I work. Besides, Hammer dancing over an e-mail is just not the same.

  • hey great vid as always !! please do a Q&A video cuz im still young and have lots of questions in my head !! also i'd like to go to your school after highschool but is one year really enough?? or would you recommand me to go to an art or design school before ??

  • Feng, your the best!

yesterday i made a DA accaunt and they asked me hwo

was my favorite artist...make a guess :P You offcourse!

    cheers!

  • Comment removed

  • i want your huge palette! XD

  • My question to you master Feng is this: How do you suppose an artist can cater to this issue and make his portfolio more visible to the recruiters. What do you thin the artist should include in his portfolio and if at all there is anything else he/she should be aware of/take into consideration while applying for jobs

  • @vidshank There's not much to building a portfolio. It just needs to contain awesome works that are relevant to the industry. If you have cool paintings, drawings, designs, etc...then you will find a job (most of the time, the job will find you). I have many art director friends from big game studios who contact us regularly because they need concept artists. The problem is finding the good ones. These days, put your work on a blog, and if it's good, someone will contact you.

  • @vidshank He has made 3 videos on portfolios. You might find your answer by watching them :)

They are called: EPISODE 19 Portfolio Prep 3 part series.

  • Excellent as usual Master Feng. I have a question that I believe am asking having in mind other fellow and upcoming artists. With the recent recession and video game industry down sizing a lot of its human resources. It has become very difficult to procure a job as an artist. And I know there are a lot of artists. recent graduates (including myself) who haven't gotten a job in over a year. Its been hard trying to get any kind of response from these companies...

  • @vidshank I'm not sure which country you are in, but the recession hasn't hit the entertainment business at all. In fact, most of our recent grad students have already secured jobs in the games industry (of all the students graduated so far, 84% have gotten jobs). In general, recessions are good for our industry...since people can't buy cars and houses, they go buy games and watch movies. Just last week EA bought PopCap games for 750 million....what recession?

  • @Fengdesigns I was in the US for about a year after I graduated and was desperately trying to get a foot in the industry. A lot of people were in the same difficult predicament as I was. Most of these companies (almost all of these biggies) were only looking for experienced artists. A lot of the forums in Linkedin that I am part of, has artists and game professionals who have had the same problem for over a year. They are still trying to find a job.

  • @vidshank Put a link to your portfolio? Let us all take a look. Since your portfolio is the THE most important part....regardless of experience, economy, etc.

  • Getting an overseas art job is becoming more and more difficult with a lot of these countries overhauling their Immigration policies. Now I am in India and its been more than six to seven months and i am yet to find a job. I can understand to a certain extent that Indian Game market is still at its nascent stage. But what do you think an artist with lil to no experience can do to get a foot in the industry??

  • Best tutorials on internet! thx!

Please Mr.Feng can you make a tutorial/presentation about how you aproach weapon design for games/film ?

  • I truly love the gestural feel to these two paintings. Great atmosphere and great episode! Great advice you had there on creating things in sets. I think my portfolio suffers from that problem, too many unrelated pieces that don't demonstrate my strengths. Thanks Feng!

  • I would love for Fang to try and draw some kind of simple humanoid drawing, not giving away all the details on of to do it. That's what I would love to see.

  • lol i love the title and the author. thanks again Feng Zhu

  • wooooow muy bueno.

  • Excellent Feng. I have a question for your next video...what's your thought process when you tackle painting large crowds like in Episode 23 "The Siege?" Do you concentrate on individual silhouettes or paint large masses and separate the forms of people later with implied detail? You also have a painting on the top of your environments page on you blog with a large dense crowd in a city.

  • great video Feng, very inspiring. I had a question about getting started in the industry. What's the best way to get your work out there to get started? Is there anything else you can do when applying for jobs at major studios other than filling out an online application?

  • @Howi3 Put your work on a blog and if its good, the people/studios will find it. Also post your work on CGchannel, Concept Art Org, CG Talk, etc. Concept art job positions are rarely listed publicly on studio websites (since everyone think they can be a concept artist as long as they draw something; so studios get flooded with bad portfolios). Instead, you have to build an audience with your work, and make the studio come looking for you. Networking with the right people is the key.

  • Thanks again for providing insight that is as valuable as gold for us wanna be concept artists.

  • You can emulate the depth so well that when I blur my eyes to check the forms, nothing happens, it's like real depth!

  • Thanks once again Feng for another awesome vid! And its good to know that I'm not stealling from you when I watch these vids for free! A QA vid would be awesome! THanks again!

  • really cool feng your awesome, next year im starting industrial design

  • love them both . great vid

  • no!!!noooo!!!! i wanted to b first u bitch!

    P.S. I love you

  • first !
