The difference between the police and vigilantes is vigilantes are never corrupt. They are never on a power trip. Police hate vigilantes because they feel they're stealing their spotlight. They want to be on the front page of every newspaper. Vigilantes do it for free, police only do the job if they see money.

They get into one hairy situation and they're showered with medals and praise and expected to retire early on a nice fat pension.
I'm starting to wonder with the rise of violent crime and discontent classes whether we actually have any Police out there who does anything but speeding tickets.

@STHFGDBY Like you, I'm also very conservative, esp. on issues related to crimes. However, conservative policies have created a process where by soft criminals become hardened criminals. I wish all countries could be like Denmark where you go to prison for vocational training, with your humanity intact, and you come out a little better than when you first enter. However, South Africa, like Britain, are not "closed" countries and we receive refugees from many parts of the world.

Not every criminal has the mentality for change because there are many who are simply evil and nothing will change them. You're country does certainly has an open door policy but has it worked ? I agree with you, what is needed is more vigilantes, that way the streets may be safer for normal people who pay the state for protection - which the state is not giving them!

It is far from perfect, but if this is sort of punishment is possible, and it is rampant, few will risk it, and the crime rate will go down. When there is not enough funding to get credible evidence, lapses in human rights are necessary. It is utilitarian to punish like this, as it dissuades those who will commit a crime. Would you rather risk all those men getting free to rape again?

Vigilantism is wrong. Especially this kind of vigilantism where a girl says she got raped by some people and say their names. What if some of them were innocent? Just cause she say they raped her doesn't mean it's true. Vigilantism where they have loads and loads of evidence is not okay either, but then it's not so bad. But if you have loads and loads of evidence, you could just as much do it the legal way.
So yeah, vigilantism sucks. But in countries like this, I understand why :P
