@mamallama29 I saw Gelsey perform Giselle w. ABT at the Met in spring 1981, in what was meant to be a great comeback for her; Baryshnikov partnered (&, of course, was directing the company). It was so sad to watch, as she barely held it together (& sometimes didn't) during the performance. That diagonal of hops on pointe was simply painful to see. Having seen her so magnificent at NYCB & then early on at ABT, I felt awful for her. Thank goodness she's come thru & is teaching & coaching now.
She is amazing! She acts the part out & looks at the other dancers! The other dancers don't , they act like they are on the stage by themselves! Get over yourselves, anyone who is a trained ballet dancer is amazing, incredible,etc.....
i love it how she brings her own element to this. other dancers kinda just do the standard giselle variation but julie kent brings a playfulness into it that made me smile the whole way through
Great attitude turns. Very very clean! Many other big stars (Coocaru, Ferri) do this variation great on other parts, but the landings in those attitudes suck big time...
Seeing the grainy, badly shot silent 16mm film version of Gelsey Kirkland doing this with an overdubbed piano track shows me almost everything that I need to know about this particular piece should be done.
she has good technique but it feels empty somehow...and the diagonal she moves her upperbody to the beat of her feet. torso and legs have to be independent. i could really see it when she turned to look at albretch...i prefer cojocaru way better. besies Julie looks to grown up to be innocent giselle.
@lmi88 That may be true, but Cojocaru does not act! I was looking forward to seeing her performance of giselle because she is one of the best ballerinas of present day, and while her technique is great and I liked her costume better and she looked the part...etc. She showed very little emotion.
@Dreamers79Norandbing Really? In my opinion cojocaru acts it like no other. she's the sweet innocent giselle in act one and the hurt, fragile, loyal willis in act two. her giselle always brings me to tears while julie's doesn't...
@lmi88 Well, I guess it's just my loyalty. I'm very protective of Julie because she is the daughter of my first ballet teacher. She is an enourmous inspiration to me. There are just so many rude comments on this page. My problem with Cojocaru was the mad scene. That was it. She is a really great dancer too.
@jankoraven Watched both a few times, (Alina and Julie) I have to say I still prefer Julie's interpretation. I also fee like her turns were better. Julie is a wonderful Dancer.
@edkearns1 i saw that and it was sad to watch .... and not in a good way. a bit like watching Plisetzkaya (i'm sure i didn't spell correctly) doing Dying yswan when she was 70.
@lacouerfairy It's not that she's too old... maybe she's just not Giselle, i remember Alessandra Ferri doing Giselle, SHE WAS PERFECT! Natalia Osipova is very young, yet SHE ISN'T GISELLE, get my point? AND YES, ALINA COJOCARU IS THE BEST GISELLE NOWADAYS!
thet's why they chose her. they porbably did'nt have anyone else to choose from. and ur are right. if they say that giselle is mere, child, then they should pick a dancer who is able play the part accurately.
thet's why they chose her. they porbably did'nt have anyone else to choose from. and ur are right. if they say that giselle is mere, child, then they should pick a dancer who is able play the part accurately. but she is NOTHING compared to this one. you've got to watch it.

SHE IS THE BEST GISELLE I HAVE EVER SEEN. And I have seen alot of BORING dancers in my day.
wtf is with everyones harsh messages towards this dance artist. She has become successful in one of the most harshest and difficult industries in the world, which is pretty amazing. give her a fucking break!
Maybe I've just allowed myself to become too attached to Alina Cojocaru's interpretation, but this one really doesn't do anything for me. It just feels... empty?
No you have a point there. i personally think that the role Giselle doesn't fit to every ballerina. Alina has this special innocence which is very important when dancing Giselle. I love Julie Kent but she kind of seems to mature for this role.
I don't understand why this ending is performed. Is this the original choreography before Spessivzteva performed this in the west? This ending is so disappointing.
Kent is one of the most insipid, mediocre coryphees ever to be promoted to principal. An absolute mystery and masterpiece of politics over real talent or stage presence. Just awful, weak and dreary. Bad, bad bad.
Really? I think she is one of ABT's finest. I think she is so beautiful and graceful. It's your own opinion so it's fine but I just really disagree. I think that someone like Paloma Herrera is really weak and dreary and shouldn't have been promoted to principal, but that's just my opinion.
LaKimmois-You are most correct. I have suffered through many Kent performances when I've gone to see Carreno,Corella,Bolle etc.She is usually paired with a top draw male because she is box office poison.I think because she was in that movie with Misha that she somehow enjoys some low level of celebrity.
Leonnidik, it's been too long, I love you for your taste, decorum and knowledge of ballet. I can count on you to call dross dross, and Ms. kent, ABT's starfucker par excellence is dross personified.
Beautiful but a bit disappointed that she almost fell in her first attitude turn and after the piques at the end. Still gorgeous though
