  • I have many Johns and Joes in my life, and thankfully, I haven't had to go through what many of you have. However, I know one day, I'll have to face that problem. I wish all of you the best of luck and sincere sympathy that I can give, in hopes that maybe one day, I'll have someone supporting me through those tough times as well.

  • This really shows that these deaths aren't just statistics, they're personal. That goes for every death as well.

  • a beautiful video!

  • I hope the last words I said to my mum were I love you.

  • R.I.P.

  • i have 2 sons john and joe. joe (21)is going to school to become a cop -john works at a company by rouge steel in dbn mich--this touched me.. ~~Love and Hugs~~

  • Death is an unstoppable force. Our understanding of life is an immovable object. The human spirit is resilient and beautiful.

  • Im just crying and crying and cryin :´(

  • Ugly cries man....that's all i get when i watch these.

  • great work guys. keep them coming. These are the stories that need to be told. If only 1% of the videos on youtube were like this.

  • oh man, I can't watch anymore of these. They're breaking my heart. Great job though, great stories and great animations.

  • I believe that we toss the word "hero" around far too casually.

but by any measure of the word, the men and women who run into situations that most people are running out are Heroes by any definition of the word.

    Mr Vigiano, you did good.

  • @AngelusDlion Oh.... and I never will forget. Never.

  • I can't stop crying with videos like these........and I thought I was one tough cookie...

  • This is sad. :(

  • *sniff sniff*

  • @emsdad71300 onions? :(

  • oh brb just crying my eyes out

  • i know what i whant to become when i'm older,

  • I've watched about 5 of these and this one is making me || that close to crying

  • Remember people could have disliked the fact that these two people died, so that could be why they liked dislike.

  • This is an incredible story.

How are there dislikes to this!?!

  • can somebody give me a hug? :'(

  • @LucysPerson sure why not , a hug is always fun *hug* here you go buddy.

  • @mic7reaper Thank you :)

  • @LucysPerson (((Lucy)))

  • Lost my mom to cancer awhile back.

The quote "I never had any 'should've, could've, would haves. I wouldn't have changed anything. There's not a lot of people in the world, that the last words they said to their son or daughter was I love you, and the last words they heard was I love you, and that helps me sleep at night.'

That right there has helped me pull through more than anything else.

  • @TheMasterTelevision a few years ago . my mommy died from breast cancer .. her 3rd time actualy ..

i didnt see her often, as I was too upsetto see her, because she could barely talk..

and she died midnight august 8th.

its so hard .. i didnt get even a last word ..

well .. i know she loved me.

that makes me feel better, to know she loved me.

    <3

  • how can anyone dislike this, honestly, you have no feelings and don't deserve people's company, I hope u live alone, and die alone.

  • 352 Al-Qaeda members disliked this

  • @MisledTrick Even Al-Qaeda members would like this video. It's still a mystery who would dislike this video.

  • Are there going to be more 9/11 stories?

  • As I sit here, about to bring home a girl to meet mom and dad....graduation and first job soon to follow....It is a bit haunting to imagine them both being taken away from me....I'd call em right now but I think both of them would rather have a good night's sleep instead of me calling them at 1 in the morning.....But after viewing these videos I think I should call more often than just when I realize I haven't heard their voice in a while. Mom, dad, I love you both. I'll make you proud.

  • Of all the things to "dislike", this shouldn't be one of them... even if you were joking, I seriously hope you rott in hell.

    - thats the nicest way I could put it.

  • We miss you Joe! Your the best my father misses you very much. He still tells story's about you when you guys were partners

  • Made me cry :')

What is the name of the melody at the end?

  • This is why I always say I love you to my parents. Sometimes, you just never know when it'll be the last thing they hear.

  • What is the outro song?

  • 3436

  • Damn Onions.... :(

  • awesome story.

  • Wow. Just wow. So amazing he loved his sons so much and he cared for them. RIP to them

  • It's interesting...I know how this man feels. My mother passed away from leukemia treatments she was receiving a little over a year ago. The 2nd month came around and about 2 days after she got the kemo, she was having some blood pressure problems and my dad took mom to the hospital. He told me where they were going and I said to mom "I love you , I will see you tommorrow." The next day I received a call saying she didn't make it. I also feel blessed that that was my last words to her.

  • Told you injustice causes pain on both sides

  • this made me realize that i didnt even said "i love you" to my father....

  • this feeling makes me feel human, PLEASE KEEP THE VIDEOS COMMING

  • people who dislike this r rednecks

  • That broke my heart.... Not many things do... Not what I exspected to happen when I clicked on the video.

  • Wow this really hit me...

  • this story made me cry, but it also made me smile at the same time.

  • Oh god! The tears won't stop! Help meeeeeeeeee!

  • I knew this was going to be sad y do I do this to myself!

  • some people can't cope with sadness

so they act out in false dislike to conceal it

    don't let it interfere

  • Disliked you mad bro?!?

  • @310Smirnoff no im disappointing in you

  • boom headshot!

  • I love these videos, but they keep making me cry :c

  • He was a civilian and wanted nothing to do with the actions a small number of his people. to say that the afghani people don't deserve videos just like is one of the most decentralized things I have ever heard and the person who wrote that comment has clearly never known loss, or else they would know that losing someone makes everyone suffer regardless of race, gender, religion, or education! What happened on 9/11 was terrible, but we are no longer the only country suffering.

  • @bloodymack15 I don't have anything against the idea of Afghans doing this. I think it's a great idea. I think it might be a bit outside of what StoryCorp is able to accomplish at this point, though. It's a great opening for someone to step into, though. I know some Southeast Asian refugees who I'm hoping to record telling their stories and translate them.

However, the lack of Afghan stories doesn't diminish this one at all. It's still a beautiful tale.

  • To the comment that has the most likes about how rude it is to say how afghani civilians need videos like this, you are an ignorant, ignorant person, and I'm ashamed of everyone for liking what they said. THese family members should be remember and missed but to say that the afghanis don't have just as much to mourn is the most ignorant load of bull I have ever seen. I have an afghani friend and I wore white for her the day her brother was killed in the cross fire of this stupid war.

  • ive watched this every day for the past week. So i continue to hold the same feeling as i held 10 years ago

  • Oh. Wow. I really teared up at the end of this. I am really glad he got to say I love you to both of his sons. They died in duty, and their sacrifice is beyond all.

  • I see some Hate in the Comments...

    And Hate starts war.

  • DAMN IT IN NEED TO STOP CUTTING ONIONS WHEN I WATCH THESE!!!

  • @fastfessuoy Yea man! The onions are affecting everybody!

  • i'm not crying ha ha

  • The narrator sounds like Microsoft Sam.

  • 343 people have no heart, and are just breathing our air for no reason...

  • :(

  • 3436

  • NOOO WAAAY!!!! 343 dislikes, just the amount of fireman died that day:( omg. made me even more sad

  • He raised two heroes, may feel comfort knowing as well.

  • I'm sending love to those families affected by 9/11. god bless

  • goddamnit, every time, I watch this I cry.

  • Because of what the father said, now I say "I love you" to my parents every day at the end of each phone call and conversation.

I want every conversation to mean something, and to never miss a chance to tell them that I love them, because you never know if the next moment will be your last.

    Thank you storycorps, thank you.

    --Max

  • @VicMaxSim nice :D

  • what song is this?

  • Stuff like this makes me proud to be American, good people willing to give up their lives to complete strangers. Why can't we have more people like these two great men and their father. I hate to see how this country is falling apart thanks to Communist taking over the country. I wanna see the strong, powerful America that we used to be.

  • @Chick45671

Other countries have firemen and police-officers who die for their cause as well.

Please be more considerate, it's disrespectful.

  • @ravengurl100 I'm sorry :(

  • :'(

  • I've never been witness to something so sad yet simultaneously beautiful. Among the most moving things I've ever experienced.

  • Wow, this made me sad, he lost both his sons, that I could not imagine how hard that had to be.

  • Saw this for the first time on PBS

  • I fell honored to have watched this, John and Joe were brave men

  • Gripping and Touching

  • :''('''''''''''''

  • i really like you what you guys are doing. keep up the good work.

  • thats so sad :(

  • why do people say they "dislike" this or feel the need to say they need to make videos for other people like afghan civilians?! I dont understand how you can be so inconsiderate and pessimistic and cynical!!! damn dont you realize these people are real and their stories are real? Have some damn respect! If not for them, for the dead relatives they have the courage to speak about. Sometimes I feel like this world has no good left. And you negative people really do not help.

  • @will11806 agreed and I hate to say it, but it is sadly true, unless we start making peace and start respecting one another, we are all doomed.

  • @will11806 I know how you feel..we just have to pay attention to all good people and good actions...God is really everywhere, and the people who doesn´t have God in there life - I fell so sorry for them, and I hope that God will reach them one day, and that they will forgive themselves...

  • @will11806 I don't think it would be bad making videos for afghan civilians because that would show that there is humanity in all of us and that war screws both sides.

  • @megapenesote Im not saying it would be bad. Im just saying people shouldn't be complaining about the terrorists attacks or the response from America on a video that is meant to be a tribute. It is inappropriate and jus disrespectful. I advocate showing both sides of any war to show how it is never a solution to any problem; but if necessary should be the last resort, not the first.

  • @will11806 thyis is a beautuful story and i totaly agree with u that they have to respect dead but i thinjk every human gonna die one day in other situation myabe but gonna die used the bad think of past never will help us to be positive but he make us hating the other because they did this attaqe if the japonis was acting like that i think the war will still between united state and japan forgive in htat is what they did and i think american people have to learn forgive and forget bad

  • @will11806 I'm pretty much a socialist, but I'll let you in on a little secret: A lot of liberals hate themselves.

  • @will11806 cous not every one have heart,or know the meaning of "I love u" that a father tells to the son

    ;.....((((

  • I always make a point to be sure I say "I Love You" whenever my husband and I part or are about to say goodbye on the phone...just in case it ever ends up being the last time.

  • No true human being could dislike this video?!

  • talk about civilian afeganstans

  • Wow, it's actually uplifting even in tragedy, that the father and his sons share such a strong bond, even till the day they died. And they both served people in crisis. It's nice to hear such a realistically positive perspective on such a tragedy as this.

  • I'm not an american. All I see is that two people died saving lives.Nothing more, nothing less. That's all that should matter in the end.

  • @lediadruid Agreed

  • very heart breaking but superstitious story, the fact that his sons were age 34 and 36 and the badge number was 3436 to me was almost like a sign. But may they rest in peace forever and be with the Lord.

  • This made me cry

  • Why are there people saying such horrible things? In this story, two people died and a parent is heartbroken. Nothing else matters really. Only a cruel, immature person would be as ignorant as some of you. I could not bear the loss of my child, so I can only relate with how this man and everyone else that suffered a loss feels becacause of the 9/11 attack (or any loss for that matter). Get off your high horses you pathetic individuals.

  • @raevan Because some people are mean and heartless >:(

  • @mindylinky Yeah. Seriously!

  • @tomkes100douchebag when i see ur comments im ashamed of being human.

  • @LilPojkn Go turn your well deserved shame into something good then. Tell your friends the real world doesn't revolve around their lives now and forever and that they as members of a class of greedy bums turned something good into something all too American, an attempt to set up endless residual gimmees. 10 years out and we still have to pay special attention to these transformed conmen. Shame? Yep, good descripter, perfectly apprapo.

  • @LilPojkn GOOD! Then turn your shame into something good! Stop reinforcing these trasnformed con artists who turned our extraordinary good will into a grab for endless residuals. To think that their loss is someone more significant than the losses that occur EVERY day in America from violent crime only serves as a reminder of the selfishness of "some people." Got it? Now get over yourself and stand tall for once in your life.

  • @crusher153 Good! Here's how they can start. Learn GRATITUDE. Learn HUMILITY. Learn that when a nation rallies around your family in your hour of need, that's not the time to embark on a long journey into entitlement. Thousands die from violent crime each year, and yet these creeps keep reaching their hands into the till. Fuck your friends, they're not even the victims for chrissakes. Live and learn. NEVER AGAIN!!

  • i remembered when i heard that Bin Laden was dead, iwas being kinda happy, but i felt akward, feeling happy for someone's death. but after hearing the StoryCorps interviews about 9/11 i say it had to be done. for justice, cause if i were a parent or a spouse, fiance of someone lost their i would have shot him, i know i would have done that if i was in their shoes.

  • @tomkes100douchebag i'm sorry if you, a friend, or a family member were a victim of some sort of crime. but what you don't get here is in a regular crime, the perp or a someone who did something with neglect, can be held liable for money. the government, fearing multimillion dollar lawsuits, set up the fund. so you might be looking at higher losses if each individual family sued.

  • Did they give up on their goal already?

  • @Adawg4008 Vigiano is an Italian name. BTW, since when does race matter, if someone was trying to save me, I would not care what they are.

  • @Adawg4008 with your crappy spelling i can see you will be in high school a while. without even knowing you i can basically sum you up. you are a pimple faced loser who doesn't fit in anywhere. you can't talk to girls so you hide in your own little computer world. so what does your computer girlfriend look like? or did you take a pic off the internet and tell your "friends " that was your girlfriend that lives in norway? best of luck with that!

  • @crusher153 Aww give him a hug for me, he had great sons :(

  • @tomkes100douchebag what? hey jackass, i know that the vigianos, their wives, and their kids would give all of their possesions in this world to have their boys back! mr vigiano, whom i personally know, is an awesome guy and this is a tribute to his sons that he misses dearly. thats all it is. in case you didn't know, 9/11 did happen, it still is a big part of this country, and people still ask questions to him and the other people involved with the rescue and recovery efforts.

  • I love this video. its not about politics, its about two sons dying to protect those in their community. they didnt think of race, religion or sex, all they thought about was to save those in need. This isnt a rally cry against terrorism its a call to become decent human beings. To stop corruption, to stop senseless killing be it domestic or foreign and to learn to appreciate things that we have. things that many go without. if i turn out to be half as good as these two.....itll be a good life

  • ;(,

  • I whish there was no oil on this planet

  • THis has got to be the saddest story i've heard of my life :'(

  • @LetsDoThisLegit Losing both kids...how awful :(

  • God Bless

  • God Bless America

  • amazing

  • thank you mindylinky

  • @mychokehold

    wow

  • the 3436 idea is just amazing.

  • That's so heartbreaking... My condolences go out to John.

  • This is very sad and I remember watching this at school(I live in niagara so this would have been big news) but when I watch and hear about this sort of thing I just cant help but think of all the other people who die daily and never get money or a story or any love. This was a tragic event but it is small when you look at everything else. America really needs to get past it and move on. Just my two cents I dont mean to be rude if you lost someone in all this.

  • No parent should have to bury their child. I'm just glad that he was able to say I love you to them.

  • people who disliked this video are assholes

  • @AgreeWithAnimalAbuse lol are you serious? This was beautiful.

  • @AgreeWithAnimalAbuse better ways of getting attention bro, this is just pathetic, get a life

  • @AgreeWithAnimalAbuse ugh, troll

  • OMFG!!!!! T-T

  • Make more!

  • who disliked this!!

  • That's sad

  • @storycorps

Dear guys. I'm not American. I live in Poland. I've had different perspective on your tragedy.More distant, more... abstract (?) But... you just touched deepest parts of my soul. I'm crying and thus feeling those things, those emotions which make life complete. I and you are not so different. People all over the world don't really differ too much. Thank you for reminding this. Thank you for introducing story of their lives to me. And thank you for sending such a strong message.

  • @jsand79 beatiful

  • thanks Phil. sobered me up for class. :)

  • Great story. I just realized that i have the same birthday as joe.

  • beautiful, They died heroes
