f Betty hadn't gotten knocked up or had more of an interest in performing live, she would've remained the groups lead singer and the group's history would've been very different. Possibly a greater legacy since Betty was even a better vocalist than little sister Mary.
Shangri-las are like the first all girl punk group. Look at em with those tight pants and fishnets on their arms. Singing songsabout dead bikers, having an album called "Death Disc" haha, they are amazing.
Badass chicks from the 60's in a band that sounded 1950's in the 1960's a nostalgic sound. That good girl, bad girl image changes with each song. Mary can be a sweetheart in one song and a Streetwise tough chick, in another song. Good/bad not evil.
nice hips and butts, 1960 badass hood chicks, tight pants, teased hair, heavy makeup, even at age 12 back then i liked girls with that look. Not the kind of girl you introduced to your parents.
Shangri-Las baby. In 1964 - Mary Weiss was my first crush. I was 10 years old - Mary was 16. Should I tell you more? "Sure". Was she tall? "Well...I had to look up!" And if I were to see her in the street - my heart would skip a beat and I'm gonna walk right up to her - give her a great big kiss - muah! Tell her that I love her! Tell her that I care! Tell her that I'll aways be there!
They were the First Girl Group to Have Twins something that I don't think exists to this day. They were the "Original" Bad Girls of Rock next to The Ronnettes. Sadly enough, the Twins are dead and to this day, they never got the "Royalties" that they should have gotten.
They grew up in the Cambria Heights section of Queens, NY. At that time, that neighborhood was predominantly white and working class. It is still working class, but it is now predominantly African-American and Caribbean.
aw the roots of rock 'n roll lots of great memories.the innocent days of america.wen you could walk down the street and not be afraid. damn i miss those days
I know that dumbass, If you who have read the previous comments I was answering angrysamoan66's commen, Don't jump to conclusions until you know the facts,
He didn't mention anything about race, so my point was why would you say the "other" white chick when they're ALL white? Plus, I wrote it tongue-in-cheek, if you noticed the happy face.
Y0ou can't read, He asked who was the other white chick because he thought the Shangri-las was only a 3-piece that's all I was saying, I wasnt' being a racist in no matter
who are they...90's kid sorry... they are soo pretty and talented...christ i wish i grew up in that era...the chick on the right looks like reese whitherspoon...so purdy
Butane0nmyskin15, The Shangri-Las were one of the most influential girl groups, despite only recording for a couple of years. It's great to see a new generation diggin the The Shangs! Check out their songs "I Can Never Go Home Anymore" and "Remember Walking in the Sand," and of course "Leader of the Pack."
I was born in 1963 and all my life I have felt I was born just that little bit too late, if I could time travel I'd be 16 in in 1963 instead, I wouldn't regret being that bit older than I am now ...
Kudos for the all-time best spoken line in a pop song ever: "He's good bad but he's not evil." And ONLY Mary Weiss could have delivered that line. PERIOD! And remember if you see anyone other than Mary at any oldies venue professing to be the Shangri-las they are phonies. The only TRUE SHANGRI-LAS were/are Mary Weiss, the Ganser twins (Marge and Maryann) and Betty Weiss. C'mon Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, induct these deserving legends NOW!!!
This particular clip was so COOL because it focused on Mary for quite awhile. (Not that the other girls weren't nice, either). But Mary, I could just look at her all day and never get tired. And what a heartfelt voice...
Okay, maybe in that case it WAS Betty, but I've seen many Shangri-La photos with Mary, the two Gansers, and SOME OTHER GIRL, and even a few with Mary, ONE Ganser, and that other girl. I think I've only seen one girl in pictures that wasn't a Weiss or Ganser. Confusing.
Nope, the girl between the Ganser twins is Betty Weiss. Granted she didn't always take part in public appearances, but that's definitely her. It used to confuse me when I'd see their old clips, sometimes there were three and sometimes four-I didn't quite grasp that Betty wasn't always there.
Betty or one of the Ganser twins would often go on hiatus from the group, but Mary was always there. Shadow Morton, their manager, was always in awe of Mary's dedication and perseverance.
Hey, who's the ring-in? There were only three Shangri-Las. Is she the dance leader or something?

@spintation I read that Betty hated being onstage and rarely performed live with the band.

Me too. Unfortunately, the end of the song has been cut off; with these lines:
Girls: "Is he a good dancer ?"
Mary: What do you mean, is he a good dancer ?
Girls: Well... how does he dance ?
Mary (with a dark, sensual voice): Close, very.. very... close.
Gee, wish I 'ld have written that line.

1952kid,
You just said they sounded nostalgic and you thought they were from the 1950s.
I just read and replied to your posting re: Out In the Streets".
Now all of a sudden they're "1960's badass chicks".
No offense intended but you seem to waver quite a bit.
I'd say they were pretty edgy during their peak ... just my humble opinion.
