Thanks a MILLION for posting this. Chris is one of my all-time favorite songwriters and musisicains so I really appreciate keeping his music alive and available for thos eof us who know. We need more of his live music to hear.
OK, so I felt compelled to post another video response, this time a song of mine called "Last Exit Off" which I realized the other day was probably very inspired by Chris' "Poison Girl" as far as feel goes. This song has had such a huge impact on me. This has got to be in my top ten.
This is amazing. Thank you deeply for posting this. As a tribute, I posted a video response of me doing a cover of this perfect song. Chris will be a part of my life always. His music is a major component of my personal soundtrack. And damn, not enough people know about him!!!!
Chris was always re-inventing himself as he had so many influences I felt. Seeing Big Sky live was Sony's initial way of marketing him. After that he found his fans and they stuck by him even when the big label didnt. RIP Chris keep playing in the next world.
Anyone notice he doesn't fit into a genre? He's a country/indie/bluegrass/rock/grunge artist, I think. Hard to tell. His style changed with every album.
Thanks for this great bit of filmmaking, Mr. Bog. I just discovered your little treasure trove of footage and I've been obsessed all weekend with all things Chris. You know he hated the video that was put out for this song, he felt it didn't represent him or the music. I'm sure he would approve of this. Thanks, I also enjoyed your own playing.
Not only am I a big fan of Chris he was a good friend, I went to High School with him and went to many parties at his house. He was an avid musician even then.He holds a special place in my heart.
hey thanks. both times that I saw Chris in Seattle, we dined right next to each other prior to the show. Once at Lombardi's before the Backstage show, and again at Hattie's Hat before the Ballard Firehouse show.
If Im not mistaken, I think he almost went pro in the dirtbike racing circuit when he was a teen.I do know he moved to Europe in his early 20's and was commercially successful to a degree, and then would come home to the states and not many people knew who he was till 'Thelma & Louise' soundtrack.Things picked up afterwards, but he always seemed to maintain a respectable level of being an'independent artist'- I love his music, saw him several times in clubs around Atl.he is surely missed.RIP Chris
Was I wrong in saying he almost went pro in the dirtbike racing circuit? seems like I read that in Rolling Stone back in 1992 or something. The guy was unique if anything. He had his own sound.I love how the second album was very Hendrix sounding in terms of wild soundscapes , heavy distorted guitars.I loved the fact that he was always a consumate 'artist'never posing as one, he was the real deal--it's a very rare quality. He is missed.
Yeah, see I like the way each of his albums sounds different. He wasn't struggling to maintain the same sound all the time the way the major labels want their artists to now. He really took his music in a huge variety of directions.
The most talented person I know (and I know a few) heard Chris Whitley for the first time and said "now THAT'S talent!"

Thanks for your comment; I still struggle to accept that such a creative, original artist is gone. He was/is so special !
