I am impressed. Where do you live? Do you make igil's to sell? I live in San Diego, CA. I play Chinese erhu, but I'm taken with the sound and music styles associated with igil. I can't find one to buy online and I can't go to Tuva to buy one. I wonder if you would be interested to make one for me. I'm impressed with your second igil. Thanks
@mrbthree100 yeah..i can make some instruments..but as a last resoult! Before please check out khoomei. com forum. There`s some enthusiasts who live in US so it would be alot easyer for you to get your igil from them ( i myself living in Estonia, so all the shipping fees and stuff). Also... theres new tuvan instrumentmakers webpage tuvaovaa. com they are the real deal. They real proffecionals and cariers of cultural herritage... so you can`t go wrong with them:D
@allakarjallak Also...igil is a werry simle instrument..so il bet your local woodwokers can make you a nice body...and working with rawhide )for soundboard) isn`t so hard.
So pleas consider the other possibilities first... as for me it may take some time to but another igil together (i have broblem with materials...it seems i`m the only one in Estonia useing the rawhide... to get the hands on that is problematic)
Hullo from england. Not only do I have to congratulate you on making a superb instrument (i watched your other video in the workshop and I loved the design). I'm glad to see you finished it. I have to also congratulate you on your playing. I love it. :)
@fiddlefella thx for kind words. But one thing is still missing. If i had a chance to compare my instrument with original ones made by traditional master...uh. Recordings aint the same...
@allakarjallak Ah, I see. How thick is the skin? I was using drum skin originally, and the folks from Tyza Kyzy said it was too thin. Switching to 1/16" goat skin made the sound sooooo much better (granted, in the youtube recording, it's tuned way to low, so hard to tell)
@fiddlefella how thick?..mmm..i dont hawe the caliber in home...but the skin is from goat..so if its to thin..blame the goat. Yeah..maybe it`s tuned litle low... but if i tune it higher i lose this fuzzy sound..it gets to clear for me...i didn`t want to use it as another chello :D
That is great! That igil is so cool, man. Will you make a video of you showing off the craftmenship? I'd like to see it up close.
I used to play Erhu, a Chinese two-stringed bowed instrument that it smaller and higher pitched. I want to hop on a plane, grab a bunch of beers and jam with you sometime. Cheers.
@obsquatch craftmenship..oh my..if only i had my old camera(some bastard stole it). Just got the new one few days ago. You cnow..i make an deal with you...if suddenly it hapens..you ringing my door bell one day... il make an igil for you! And you can see it all the way. Don`t forget the beer!!!
I saw your other video of when you were making the soundbox for your first igil, how did you make the wooden rounded part of the soundbox?

Dam! Nice handiwork!
This video shows me that one plays the strings from below!!!
You don't press the strings to the neck, you make a bridge with your knuckle.
Is this correct?
Makes me think I can play it...

I'm getting ready to try making a morin khuur. Would you tell me what gauge of fishing line do you use for the strings and how many in each string?
Hikikomori013 1 year ago
@Hikikomori013 line is 0,02 mm. In low string there`s about 120 lines...and in higher one about 70.
Good luck with your project!
allakarjallak 1 year ago
@Hikikomori013 sorry..my mistake...it was 0,2 mm not 0,02. Stroft fishing line :D
allakarjallak 1 year ago
@allakarjallak Thnank you. I thought that was a small number. I went to the store to check today. For other Americans, 0.2mm is 4 pound line.

@allakarjallak The goat skin is about 1/16th thick. I got it from Djembedirect . com
Oh, I was meaning *my* igil was tuned a little low in my video. ;-) Yours sounds good to me :-)

minigunmen 1 year ago
