Fun fact: MGM had so little faith in this film they cut funding for it to spend on the films Brigadoon and Rose Marie. Both films failed to match Seven Brides commercial and critical success.
Howard Keel did a much better job when he sang with a relaxed pop style voice, In operetta type singing, his voice seemed more forced. I think he was a brilliant performer, though. Seven Brides showcased his talents wonderfully.
@ignasie "what's the meaning of TETCHED?" that's where the lyrics takes advantage of the country accent. he meant "touched" as in touch in the head or crazy
@ShakeItLikeAPoleroid the mispronunciation was on purpose. that's how people talked in the 1850's, as most were uneducated, plus it allowed for the writers of the musical to spin the word on it's head and use it throughout the song.
I know. I was just saying that the song would've been very different if Adam pronouced it "Sabine", instead of "Sobbin" to convince his brothers to steal the girls.
The song in the movie is called "Sobbin women", to show the ignorance of the brothers. the people who wrote the song obviously know the real tern is "Sabine".
@ShakeItLikeAPoleroid Dude, idk if anyone else said this to you in the comments, I haven't looked. But it's a play on words. Making Sabine sound like "Sobbin' " as to say they were Sabine women who were sobbing.

I remember watching this movie when I was little girl I never got the meaning of this song until I watch it yesterday then I'm like oh man this song is so wrong and my moms like now you understand the meaning don't you and I'm like heck yeah!
If you are listing the lyrics/singing parts from the movie/clip you are showing - you have them assigned wrong in several spots. Thanks for sharing though, this is my fav musical film EVER!!!! :D
Considering that the women are written to fall in love and marry their captors, I'd say this movie is pretty sexist. Doesn't mean all of the songs/dance scenes are rubbish.
@TehSpazztasticLime You do realize that this movie was based in 1850's and women had little rights, they weren't attempting to be sexist, they were accuratley setting the scenes to tht date..This movie is quite light-hearted to be honest and in the end the brothers learn their mistakes and frown upon their actions...so please dont lable a movie without knowing your facts
@TheYoshiza I know what happens, this was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid. Yes, it was based in the 1850's, and yes they probably weren't being intentionally maliciously sexist. Just because they weren't intentionally all-out in-your-face "make me a sammich" sexist, doesn't mean some elements of it aren't present.
Yes the kidnapping is frowned upon. Ultimately though, they are REWARDED. The women go through some kind of fucked up Stockholm Syndrome and marry them.
@TehSpazztasticLime Well you have good taste, ahah...and yes my last sentence there was a bit harsh and i do agree why you came to tht conclusion, and i have nthing against...I just felt as though it was not intentional
I can't help pointing this out every time I hear the name, even though it has nothing much to do with the song (which is very fun to listen to, by the way). Claudius means crippled. Just a funny thing.
And Gideon's actor stupided the character up very well, I notice.
Oh good grief people, lighten up. This is a broadway musical which were light hearted stories with great music and dancing. Just appreciate the musicality. They were fun.
The people who are commenting about how this film is "sexist" have got it wrong - it's not the movie, it's the character. Adam is supposed to be a total idiot about girls. He and his brothers learn how to behave later in the story.
Also, what "The Rape of the Sabine Women" was written, "rape" meant "kidnapping".
If you hadn't noticed, the last line of the song is "We're gonna make them sobbin' women smile!". They think they're doing what's right...oh, just watch the movie.
The characters are sexist because they don't see any problem with kidnapping women just because they want wives. Women are there to be taken.
THE FILM itself is sexist because it agrees on a narrative level. By having the brides "fall" for their kidnappers in the end (hello, Stockholm Syndrome) the movie implies that the brothers did the RIGHT thing because "it worked out". So according to THE MOVIE kidnapping IS a valid form of wooing a woman.
the film makes it quite clear early on that the women are already in love (or at least have crushes on) the 6 brothers, but their parents arent supportive because of their social status. it's not sexist, it's about social prejudices. of course, kidnapping is wrong, but it's just a stupid movie. it's not really about social prejudices or sexism, but rather, just fun songs, entertaining dancing, and an amusing story.
@TaiwanGuy1 Oh dear. Did you know that there's a perfectly non-sexist solution to the situation you describe that, with the exception of one CRUCIAL difference, looks pretty similar to the one in the movie? It's called eloping. Do you know what the difference is between eloping and kidnapping? Before you can elope you have to actually ASK THE WOMAN BEFOREHAND WHETHER OR NOT SHE WANTS TO. Because when you're not sexist, women are people. And people have a right to decide about their own lives.
@TaiwanGuy1 Cont.: And if a person makes a decision, you respect it.That means for the movie: some of the women might have said "Yes!", but others "No.", because they wouldn't go against their families wishes, feared social repercussions or any other reason, DESPITE being in love. And that would have been fine. But in the movie, the ladies are never given any say in that matter. So yes, STILL sexist.
P.S: And believe me, most women would consider a kidnapping as a fine reason to fall OUT of love.
@comiclover788998 Holy crap just lighten up and enjoy the movie. It has a happy ending unlike a lot of movies today. I hope for the people around you, you aren't this serious all the time.
@redsawdom Moral of the story they are reading and what the brothers believe, yes. Moral of the film, oh no! You've got it wrong. The brothers discover that they are WRONG and they have to be "going courtin' "
Guys, stop fighting over what this song and this movie's about. You either like it, or you don't. Take your pick. In my opinion, this is one of the best musicals ever made.
(And I agree with @123generic's comment about how Plutarch used 'rape'.)
those sabine women were sobbin' from their throbbin' muscles that they got from that riotous ride. Then they passed all of their nights.. umm... just sewin'... ... so can I giggle at the lewdness of it all now?
I fell in love with this musical bc of my dad he's a western fan, and one day he watched this. The overall message is to find love and during those times competition for a good woman was stiff. It's a classic and very entertaining. and it brings up the fact that women like to be pursued but it is illegal to kidnap your would be spouse, this is entertainment. Just like the musical Calamity Jane, love that one too!
In Plutarch's tale, yes it is Sabine, referring to their race, however, the point that Adam is making is that they are crying, because they've been kidnapped. Sorry I had to point out something that should have been rather obvious.
Um, well, the guys aren't supposed to be right, you know. It's part of the plot that they learn what jerks they've been. They're supposed to be backward and unsophisticated. Then they learn what love is all about. It's not a sexist movie. Millie is the voice of the movie, not Adam.
@dallyx66 True, but don't forget the women want the men too. I love the scene in the attic when they are talking about their guys, and it is obvious that Millie is having to control them too! The problem is they forgot to kidnap the preacher.
@dallyx66 No, Adam sings the truth. Many women love jerks, they go through a billy bad-ass stage: "They acted angry and annoyed... ' but secretly they was overjoyed!..." But they are in denial about it. :)
not to say I don't like the song but I think the actual title of the song is " Sobbin' Women" be cause the original title of the movie: " Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" was going to be "Sobbin' Women". You can also look up the title of all the songs on Wikipedia.
I like some musicals and this is one of my favorite. Does this mean I gay? LOL! This is just great to listen to. I always laugh at this song when ever I hear it. In todays world this action will get you thrown in jail for life. Boy how this world have changed.
@AncaThirteen I know it sounds weird, but remember that the story of the sabin women isn't really about rape, it's about rapture, the woman were stolen by the romans and after that they lived in harmonie with them and had many children and received civil rights. I know that story is rubish and if it happened at all in reality, there would probably have been rape. But not in the story.
@AncaThirteen The men here believe the story and think (unknowing how to really treat women) they have to steal them (not molest or rape) and that they will make them happy afterwards(they sing: we're gonna make those woman smile). Of cours it's stupid and macho, but it's not the way you think it is, they really are in love, they just don't know how to treat women and aren't planning to hurt him, they think they'll make them happy by 'being a man'.
You are giving all the men involved far too much credit. Do men in love with women make puns about "sobbin'" women as they smile and make their plans? Or men who are in love with the idea of being in love and making women love them, or men who just want "a woman"?
Do you seriously think that women carried off by men would usually be kept safe and unharmed until they came to love their captors?
@AncaThirteen Stories of women being captured and then falling in love with their captor are rubish, the reality is that it's cruel. This here is meant for the viewer to know that it's wrong, as you do, and to know that their way of thinking is due to their stupidity (which is of course no excuse). You must place this scene into context. Except for kidnapping them, they don't harm the girls as they see they're angry. They realise the plan was wrong&stupid and during winter the girls forgive them
i saw this movie when i was about 7 and im 16 now and i still think that this movie is 100000x better than high school musical. i watch it once a month i cant get enough

Oh yes, this is a really catchy song!Man I love it when someone says Franks full name! That's so funny!
LilithSterninAddams 1 year ago 3
not to say I don't like the song but I think the actual title of the song is " Sobbin' Women" be cause the original title of the movie: " Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" was going to be "Sobbin' Women". You can also look up the title of all the songs on Wikipedia.

FollowToChange 1 year ago
@AncaThirteen The men here believe the story and think (unknowing how to really treat women) they have to steal them (not molest or rape) and that they will make them happy afterwards(they sing: we're gonna make those woman smile). Of cours it's stupid and macho, but it's not the way you think it is, they really are in love, they just don't know how to treat women and aren't planning to hurt him, they think they'll make them happy by 'being a man'.
FollowToChange 1 year ago
@FollowToChange
AncaThirteen 1 year ago
@AncaThirteen Stories of women being captured and then falling in love with their captor are rubish, the reality is that it's cruel. This here is meant for the viewer to know that it's wrong, as you do, and to know that their way of thinking is due to their stupidity (which is of course no excuse). You must place this scene into context. Except for kidnapping them, they don't harm the girls as they see they're angry. They realise the plan was wrong&stupid and during winter the girls forgive them

@FollowToChange
I think you are missing my point.
AncaThirteen 1 year ago
@AncaThirteen It's just a Film! Goodness, do you really believe that they meant it to be some kind of sign saying that kidnapping women is ok?
DarlingDebutante 1 year ago
@DarlingDebutante
I think that it was and is an expression of rape culture, and also that films are not made in a vacuum.
AncaThirteen 1 year ago
@AncaThirteen ...fun irony isn't it...have you heard "bless your beautiful hide"? Classic sexism!
XarxesB 1 year ago
@AncaThirteen If it makes you feel better, "Rape" as Plutarch used it just meant abduction rather than how we use it now.

Haha! I'm sure Plutarch didn't condone the rape of the Sabine women in his writings. But obviously the brothers took it that way.
Great song like many in this movie.
