@arumdevil Mine cost £300 five years ago with just over 100k on clock and whilst I've had to do bits and bobs it's never broken down on me once, the best bargain I've ever owned, and apart from the thirst I would recomend one of these as a workhorse to anyone.

Granted I bought the car from a friend for 200 bucks...but when i bought it the only electrical problem was the heater-a/c would spaz out, and both the heat and a/c didnt work. By the time i got rid of it, the ignition stopped working (i had 2 wires under the bumper you had to touch together to make it crank) the dash panel would spaz out and show every single warning message, and the windows stopped working.

But when you are talking about engine reliability, you can't compare 90hp Saab's and 100hp Volvo's to a ~300hp sports car. First of all, wear and tear parts take a totally different kind of beating what that kind of HP/torque. A sports car is obviously driven in a different manner. Just put a 18-25 year old behind the wheel of that 1m mile saab and it wouldnt have gone half the distance.

Instead of just applying throttle to maintain speed, you apply more throttle balanced by the brakes to spin the turbo up to produce boost. This way when you start the drag the engine can take off more quickly because it's already boostin'!

OK....I will say something, an S-4 0-60 is about 5.7 seconds and the automatic is a doggish 7 seconds flat the early SAAB 9000 without TCS 0-60 was around 6.3 seconds so it really depends on the driver.........Thanks
Thats possible, except 18-20psi is way out of the range. To keep the stock injectors, it would be below 10psi which would be kindof defeating the purpose of the holset. I have a 340chp ng900 and in order to run 18psi with a big t28 turbo I had to get 50# big injectors. A holset is decidedly bigger than mine so I wouldnt be surprised.
If they are running low enough boost levels, then it is possible. No offense taken, sorry if I sounded rude :)
Its not about the fact that the video says that it has stock fueling or not. The fact is that the stock redtop injectors are way over their duty cycle with this setup, so unless this car is running extremely lean (on the verge of blowing up) then the stock injectors simply cant keep up. Also, it is hardly easy to believe that when it mentioned the twin fmics. That is obviously not true, so dont even defend that either.
Not trying to be a jerk, but is it possible hes running the holest with lower boost levels like 18-20 PSI? I know that holset is a big turbo and the spool up wouldn't be good. However, if someone was in the process of a build and hadn't purchased any fuel upgrades could it be done? If this Saab was running much more boost then it should have walked the Audi easy unless both car descriptions are inaccurate.
Umm, no way will the saab have stock fueling. A holset is a very large turbo, and yes they are relatively cheap so that is not the issue. What is the issue is the fact that there is no twin fmic or stock fueling, which brings into question the whole supposed set up of the 9000. Sorry, but stock fueling is a no no.
lol the s4 is practically stock. a tune and exhaust....not much considering you replaced the turbo and have 2 aftermarket front mounts. good race though.
Big deal. that holset probably cost 200$ and with stock fuel injectors and stock clutch it cant have much more than 300 hp. u can do that with a stock td-04 on the newer saabs. no idea how much power the audi has...
200 for the turbo alone. and yes its true. the holset hx35 is a stock turbo off a truck (forgot which one) and can be had at salvage yards for 200-300 $ if you look hard enough.

In short - turbo lag. From a rolling start at lower reves the turbo will take a while to spool up. Say they were starting at 30mph - You have your foot on the accelerator whilst at the same time using your left foot on the break to keep the car at a steady speed. Then when you want to get going you simply release the break and as the turbo is already boosting you get instant surge of acceleration instead of having to wait fir the turbo to spool up. Useful for exiting corners at speed.
this makes me miss my old 89' 9000. i put so much work into it and it finally got too expensive to repair after climate changes eventually took their toll on almost all my electrical wiring.
i now have a '96 900SE turbo, but that doesn't even hold a candle to it in my mind.

Main problem. K04 turbo. It is a terrible design, too small and general bearing turbo. Get either a dual ball bearing disco potato turbo or much larger turbo (like the hx35 in the vid).
Just raced a chipped B5 S4 with my 1997 9k CSE with K04, performance clutch and some ecu tuning. Opposite result, the Audi was quicker up top.
I think there is something quite different about my mapping however, as I get insane tire-smoking accerlation in 2nd and lots of boost taper in the latter gears.
It was much more fun watching the S4 disappear in the rearview of my '86 951 :-)

what is "brake-boosting"? i cant think of a reason why you would want to apply/use brakes to try to get the turbo/car to accel faster

In short - turbo lag. From a rolling start at lower reves the turbo will take a while to spool up. Say they were starting at 30mph - You have your foot on the accelerator whilst at the same time using your left foot on the break to keep the car at a steady speed. Then when you want to get going you simply release the break and as the turbo is already boosting you get instant surge of acceleration instead of having to wait fir the turbo to spool up. Useful for exiting corners at speed.

ughh.
this makes me miss my old 89' 9000. i put so much work into it and it finally got too expensive to repair after climate changes eventually took their toll on almost all my electrical wiring.
i now have a '96 900SE turbo, but that doesn't even hold a candle to it in my mind.
oh, and to the idiot below me:
i have never driven a car that is as good as a saab in the snow, AWD or not.

that s4 is a Quattro..a good amount of added
weight due to the added "AWD SYSTEM" + 22% of crank hp used to push it=slower car.
make that s4 f/w or r/w and..saab gets spanked
add rain/snow/dirt/= saab gets spanked
you get the picture....plus the s4 is the sexy super model....the saab is the fugly librarian....j/k...nice vid though

you forget, a used saab can be had for chump change compared to a used S4, the saab has more interior space, is better on fuel, and is very likely cheaper to insure.

That was supposed to reply to someone else's post. Anyway, I'm not surprised the S4 pulled away at the beginning, he has boost right off the bat thanks to the bi-turbo set-up. It's really hard to beat Saabs on the freeway anyway, I don't think a lot of people realize that, or don't want to realize that...

i have a 98 saab 900 se 2.0 turbo myself and let me say it never ceases to amaze me how many people want to race off the starting line. dont they know its a damn turbo? jeeze and it may look stock but i have some secrets, lets just say i whooped this porshe that tried it. haha.

Main problem. K04 turbo. It is a terrible design, too small and general bearing turbo. Get either a dual ball bearing disco potato turbo or much larger turbo (like the hx35 in the vid).

Just raced a chipped B5 S4 with my 1997 9k CSE with K04, performance clutch and some ecu tuning. Opposite result, the Audi was quicker up top.
I think there is something quite different about my mapping however, as I get insane tire-smoking accerlation in 2nd and lots of boost taper in the latter gears.
It was much more fun watching the S4 disappear in the rearview of my '86 951 :-)
