  • means bach invented the harmonic minor and the movement of dom5th chord to root chord but this scale also exist in indian and arabian music wo is the first invented hehe?

  • Comment removed

  • Does that mean if your playing Jazz in a minor key you can use the melodic minor on the 1 chord for the whole song to solo with?

  • great i have watched the hole vid (2 vids actually) AND whats the minor scale that metalcore uses? pure? its or melodic? the thing is im new at metal core so...

  • Suggestion:

Great lesson, even if it covers a lot in a short space of time. What you didn't include though, that solves the entire dilemma... is the pentatonic minor. Since it removes the intervals that distinguish the different minors, it works over everything, including the major. Another way of looking that it is that it only includes the notes common to all the minors. ie... in A natural minor, it removes the B and F. Simple way to demystify them in modern music. Play the pentatonic. ;)

  • I think my brain just exploded...

  • Thank you very much! Good knowledge

  • You're such a wonderful teacher!

  • thank you so much , you explained it very well

  • i love this lesson, man, clear, to the point and very interesting, you are one hell of a teacher, thanks.

  • So I know I shouldn't have learned this before I learned the major scale but I am self tought and someone told me not to bother with the major scale so I didnt for the longest time but I was going through your website and I have the major scale and all of the patterns down (been practicing alot) but the "modes" of the major scales are still a little flaky to me I understand the concept but if you could take the time to make a video lesson on the subject to clear it up that would be great THANKS!

  • Sorry for the run-on sentence, I was trying to conserve my characters wit out typin lyk dis lol.

  • You sir, are an awesome teacher, I have learned alot from this

  • You are very smart.

  • I play piano as well as guitar and I usually learn all three, the minor, the minor with a 7th, and starting minor then changing it to sound major.

  • 3:20 - music came first, theory came later.

You can't ask a robot or a mathematician or statistician to compose something like the 9th symphony.

    Just my thoughts, Thx =)

  • what kind of pick ups do you have in your guitar sir

  • holyshit..Justin knows like all the scales..

  • This clarifies everything!

  • VERY VERY USE FULLL IT HELPS ALLOT,,,, I love the explanation of the ascending and decending KEEP ROCKING KEEP ROCKING JAH BLESS

  • For all the people that think he talks to much. This is a lesson! He has to explain something.

  • nice lesson. thank you.

  • Amazing the amount of free lessons/content you have provided for people. That's how music should be!

  • actually, i wasnt sure where to start and learned harmonic minor as my first scale lol. i went on to learn g major which was also e minor, my favorite key. so i learned the minor and such from there.

  • Im cracking up over here Justin..loved that answer on god. LOL Thank you SO much for your videos, Ive learned more with you than with any other method Ive tried. Im actually playing the guitar. Wow!!

  • Thanks for clearing that up Justin, i was only curious to be honest.

  • Did a music theory class, it's nice to find something to bridge the gap between the theory and the practice, gogo justin!

  • This is amazing!! I've been looking for something like this for years! I was thinking about taking a Music Theory class but I couldn't fit it in with all the school work I have, but this video did help me alot even tho it wasnt that much, I'm just that much more closer to understanding music alittle better. thank you and I hope you make more videos soon!

  • wow i hav no idea wot ur on about

  • I am an evangelical atheist seeing as you asked.

There probably isn't a god. So stop worrying and enjoy your life.

  • 1 word.. w00t.

  • he means that he isnt a pretentious bastard who is like THERE IS NO GOD NEVER NO NO, its more like he doesnt believe but doesnt deny that there could be. anyway, you christians are weird, i swear this video had nothing to do with religion. you bastards always trying to encroach on evryone else's beliefs.

  • what does that have to do with hell?....and why is everything hell with you people!?!

  • @JustinSandercoe As if you weren't cool enough already! Coolest guy ever.

  • @JustinSandercoe Out of curiousity what exactly is an "evangelical atheist?" The term seems a bit of an oxymoron. Thanks for the quality lessons esp. since there's a lot of junk out there as well.

  • @DTorDeath I think he means that he means he was raised as an evangelist but has become an atheist. I see what you mean though.

  • @JustinSandercoe i try to tell that to people everyday

  • @timmm85 hopefully just had a reailtygasm..

  • @snooper09 Ye, though i only really asked my question because i noticed the "Fish" on the guitar - and i remember this being a symbol for christians... I wasn't trying to offend anyone. But ye... realitygasm lol quality

  • Yeah are u cristian?? i'm frOm mexico sorry my bad english

  • haha really oversimplified story, but brilliant way to explain it. thanks J

  • my brain hurts, haha thanks justin

  • Cool stuff Justin. You've been a big help to me. I've bought several of your products off of the site and it has helped me progress. You have an excellent teaching style and it is wonderful of you to do this. I wish I could donate more.

  • confusing but interisting

  • 1:13

"well, I'll just sharpen the F# then."

slip up? or i'm too dumb to understand?

    btw, great video! hehe.

  • yeah I meant to say, sharpen the F... oopps. :(

  • yeah. i'm sure everybody who watches this vid knows that. i'm just messing with you. hee hee

keep up the great work mate!

  • Nice hat! hahaha

  • awesome video. really kept me entertained.. normally i get kinda boted after the first few minutes or so.. but this one was just to entertaining to turn away from haha.

  • A very big "THANK YOU" one more time, Justin, for your patience to make all these really excellent tutorial videos for all of us. Greetings from Athens, Greece.

  • I still cant even remember the 5 positions of the major scale - quite frankly its all a bit too hard really. WHY WHY WHY!

  • This is a video about guitar not evolution-we all know creationism sucks btw :D

Good vid, very clear well done 5*

  • Lots of great info!!! Thank you Justin!!!

  • cool, really would like to see video about modes and different types of minor scales

  • ouch way too advanced for me!

  • why do i get a thumbs down for asking how old justin is or how long he's been playing guitar?!? that's a perfectly logical question...does anybody know the answer or is this a big mystery

  • he said in a vid somewhere hes been playing since about 6.

  • This video is about guitars, it's a guitar lesson (as you can see in the title)...

It has NOTHING to do with your fuckin' evolution stuff, you fags

  • lmfao at people talking about evolution.

  • why the fuck are people talking about evolution

  • I'm wondering exactly the same

  • How did the talk of evolution come into this music lesson? Nice lesson, sounds very eastern xD

  • Brilliant! Seriously I am in awe of your knowledge.

  • That guitar have a zero fret?

  • ???

the "0 fret" would be the nut...

  • No, some guitars have a fret that goes in place of the nut, and a nut that sits further back. Search "zero fret" on google.

  • Ahh ok gotcha. Never heard of that till now.

  • All power to you Justin, you are a brill teacher! Thanks again buddy.

  • You're blessed with the gift of teaching. I love the passion you put in it. Thank you for your videos from Spain!

  • hey justin, can you teach me to sing like you do?

  • Thank You!!

  • GOOD VIDEO tijuana b.c. mexico...

  • Justin is God.

  • The Darwin fish is there because this year celebrates the 150th anniversary of the writing of a great text, The Origin Of Species. It's not a debate dudes, there are hardly any Christians that argue that the book is wrong... the book is a fact. They argue that God created the world in which evolution happened... But this is not the place for a theology debate.

  • So, you believe in something is true because you want to ? That's not the way it works, son. Something is true because of the proofs, irrespective of your likes and dislikes. The man was different 3 millions, 1 million, 100000 years ago, that's evolution. Species don't evolve the same way or the same speed You didn't check how monkeys were millions years ago and how they will be in the future. Chimpanzee are the only animals who can learn sign language, number, make and use tools. Except humans.

  • When have you ever observed evolution in action? Why did evolution stop with recorded history? Why don't fish ever crawl out of the tank? There is no empirical evidence of evolution.

  • Evolution takes millions of years before you can observe drastic changes, and recorded history does not go back millions of years. Evolution will NEVER happen "right before your eyes".

  • Evolution takes million of years? That's convenient. All other "scientific facts" happen all the time. Shouldn't we see even just one creature evolve into a completely different creature just once, ever?

  • No, not "all" scientific facts happen all the time. Do we see life forms popping up on other planets all the time? You will not ever see one creature give birth to a completely different type of creature, evolution doesnt work like that. It is a series of minute changes over long periods of time that sum up to a large change. Take dogs and wolves for example. Similar creatures, but not the same. One could have evolved from the other, over a long period of time, with MANY small changes.

  • that's not necessarily true. if you wanted to take dogs for an example, history shows that they're temperment had evolved from wolves fairly quickly by man's influence.

  • Even still, its an observable example of evolution.

  • If you have to explain evolution to people who deny the many examples i.e wolves vs. dogs, then you are wasting time on them. The variety in all living things = evolution as there can't be that many origins. Everything having it's own origin of popping up from nothingness is way more complicated to imagine than evolution.

  • Yes, I know. I find that the people who deny evolution are 99% of the time, people who dont understand it, or refuse to try to understand it.

  • evolution takes millions of years bro

    ur not gonna SEE it

  • how about the natural selection of viruses as they become resistant to medicine. They evolve specific traits in order to survive...thats evolution

  • That is a virus "evolving" into a virus. Not what Darwin was talking about. Darwin was talking about bears evolving into whales.

  • Comment removed

  • I actually find your ignorance of simple biology more insulting than any assumption about your ancestors. In order to believe that man was "the same" millions of year ago, you actually have to shut out every viable piece of evidence that is taking place right before your very eyes. Perhaps you should read up a little on evolution before making uneducated remarks such as "chimps don't wear sandals".

  • well. they don't.

  • I'm gonna have to take a look into this.

  • @JustinSandercoe Cheers! Good to know you're one of us... one of us... one of us... Evil Communist Socialist Nazi Atheists... The worst kind!

Seriously though, great videos. I think I've learned more from them and your website than I have in my past 3 years of playing guitar, stumbling around blindly not exactly knowing what I'm doing!

  • Justin, can we do a Vulcan Mind Melt ? I want your knowledge of music theory without the headaches, lol.

  • I love the harmonic minor, cause of the eastern sound :)

  • Hilarious! well done!! normally videos bore me.. well some of them but this one kept me in tune through out the whole thing.. realy talent you have.

  • Justin, I think you're the only guy who could explain the modes to me. Some say just start on some other note, but that just doesn't resolute with the other guys in the band, some say just to add some other notes... Confusing. Please do some lessons on modes, i am sure I'm the only one confusing about this matter. (i would donate if i had money..)

  • Lol love how a fish sticker turns into a religious debate...

    Im atheist Btw =)

  • Justin, great lesson man. please know I really appreciate all these. I've been watching your lessons for a year and 7 months (how long i've been playing guitar for)

  • Thanks for the great lessons..

  • It's so blackmorish... good!!!

  • well done sir! no doubt that if i was reading that i would have been completely lost haha... thanks very much for the visual :-)

  • no Tasmanian devil?

  • No, I wondered too, where it might have been gone!?

  • Hey Justin, really cool lesson, and really useful theory for the world of tablatures and minor pentatonic soloists. Keep it up mate!

  • Really well explained, Justin, as usual, the Bach story really made a hard topic simple to learn. Thank you :)

  • great lesson

  • Wow, the modal harmony thing sounds cool. Looking forward to those lessons!

  • another excellent video, very much appreciated!

  • This lesson blew my mind. Amazing how just changing one note in the natural minor scale (aeolian) can change the whole tone of the sound/scale. I also kinda figured out that A harmonic minor is also E phrygian major. Which sounds really crazy if you drone the low e string and play A harmonic minor/E phrygian major. Kinda spanishy/eastern thing going on. So I'm guessing that the harmonic minor scale has its modes just like the major scale? Anyways, thank you sir. You are the best.

  • Hey Justin, these kind of lessons are right up my street!!!! Can't wait for the minor modal harmony lessons!!! Demystification!!!

  • Job well done

  • could you possibly make this a video response to part 1? just makes it easier to find part 1 rather than having to go look for it.

  • That's a good idea, I just don't know how! But to find my vids you should be able to see them on the channel page - or even better - try the web site - there you get both videos embeded and all the notes there too! J

  • I know you can view them at your channel, I'm going to make sure to do that as soon as I get some free time but as far as posting as a video response (now i don't know for sure), I believe if you go to your video (part 1) and just like how you can post a comment on it, you should also have the option to post a video response on it. Hopefully that helps. And keep up the excellent work!

  • Guys what the ?? It's a guitar video not a dicussion about religion, come on that's the problem with youtube there's always people to argue about anything, if you want to argue about religion, nazis, jews, god go away on videos where it is the topic...

    HERE IT'S ABOUT MUSIC!

& thank you justin for this awesome video !

  • thanks justin! great video series as usual.

  • Excellent as always!

  • Highly informative, made me actually understand the relation between those. Thanks so much, Justin. Pure awesomeness.

    ~iNde

  • well, i guess we're lucky then that the christian god doesn't exist. we don't have to deal with such foolishness. well, those who live in reality, at least.

  • I noticed the fish too, but this isn't really the place the theology debate is it? I'm just grateful to justin for these lessons.

  • well, if you read back a bit farther, you will notice there's a jackass talking about mocking his god and going to hell, etc. i was merely pointing out to him the fact that his god does not exist, so it was rather more of a statement than a debate.

  • Oh yes. a very detailed and good lesson too.

  • But I'm sure God has a sense of humour, maybe he will let Justin off, he seems a good bloke.

  • The "Christian" symbol might not do one any better since such things could be interpreted as a form of idolatry.

  • Oh, but about vid. Justin, you're great! Only guitar teacher i really understand and want to learn from. Just sometimes i have to look into dictionary :P

  • It's a Darwin Fish. Not Christian symbol. It's like the Christian one, but have legs and "Darwin" inside.

  • great vid.

  • Is that a Christian symbol on his guitar? I thought he was agnostic..

  • Comment removed

  • evangelical atheist actually ;)

  • how old are you man?? and how long have you been playing the guitar?

  • Nice lesson as usual, Justin. The sounds coming from your guitar reminded me of the love theme from "Flashdance." Does it to anyone else? I wonder if that is the same scale used in the Giorgio Moroder song.

  • Actually, on second thought, I might be thinking of Giorgio Moroder's theme from the movie "Midnight Express." Whatever the case, you hear this quite often in music.

  • Cheers Justin that helped a lot, but now my brain hurts. I'd go and have a lie down if I hadn't just gotten out of bed.

  • how long did it take to "evolve" talents to play and teach the way you do?

I wish I could ask Darwin, maybe Dawkins has a clue....

  • Hi Justin, very good lesson. But I beg to differ as to whT TO LEARN FIRST. When i started playing the minor scale , that's when i started hearing lots of songs that came from that scale, The minor pentatonic will have you hearing so many pop and rock songs just messing you up coz you want to play with what your hearing instead of your pratice lessons. jmho

  • great stuff, justin. that was a good theory refresher.

  • New guitar?

  • Very good.

Like the new head gear. You look like a Kung Fu expert!

  • Justin, I love this theory stuff it really appeals to the way I think and therefore helps my understanding and my appreciation of music. I am off to your site to get more. Thanks

  • thanks Justin!

  • malmsteen mixes the harmonic and aolean scale, he calls it the harmolean scale.

  • Thats just playing in a minor key. Harmonic minor and natural minor are usually tossed back and forth in a minor key depending on the chords used.

  • Im still learning the Major jjeje

  • that major is minor in another key lol. it all ends up being the same.

  • im just going to hit notes randomly (joke)

  • Part2 was even better hat the first, but I have one question...

So does this mean that if you mix melodic minor and minor pentatonic you get Baroque n' Roll ?

    Sorry - couldn't resist.

    -Cheers

  • no, you get the same song yngwie has ever made D: he is really an ass, pretentious n such. plus he hits his wife.

  • I like how you turned a fun spirited comment into an attack on Yngwie Malmsteen

  • ty, i liked it too hehe.

  • Please someone answer this , its a really good question. whats the best way of mixing scales ??

  • Mix scales however you want as long as it sounds good to you.

I mix natural minor with pentatonic minor with harmonic minor, basically just add in whichever notes you think sound cool and you can make some interesting solos. That's what Marty Friedman does.

  • Legend......

  • I love your lessons, and I love learning new things.

  • don't worry about the strap and the mic... the audio sounds fine and this lesson was awesoe

  • love the guitar
