Great tribute. Incredible man. Does anyone know why he is credited as the father of BJJ? His older brother Carlos Gracie taught him Jiu Jitsu so you would think Carlos Gracie would receive the credit as the father of BJJ. I do know Helio took it to a new level. Just curious. Helio and Carlos left incredible legacies with HUGE families of their own that all took the torch passed down. Remarkable family. Helio is a legend.

@herbiesnerd I would imagine because he is the one who went out and challenged everyone to show and prove the art. I haven't heard many stories of Carlos challenging people of other styles. Carlos definitely created the style, but Helio adapted it and proved to the world it is the greatest single martial art.

Kimura choked this guy unconscious and broke his arm in the famous 1951 fight, Helio vs Masahiko Kimura, worlds greatest Judoka at the time, and Helio greatest BJJ fighter at the time. Helio lost but look what he gained, he carried on fighting with a broken arm, that is a champion. Kimura showed great respect for that, and Helio and his family have learnt a lot from the Japanese people and now i will learn from both. RIP.

@mickeyford google kosen judo. it will clear it up for you. bjj is great i train everyday. it is a very old style of judo not taught anymore. only in a small area of japan do they still teach it. it makes sense though cause carlos sr was taught by mitsuyo maeda during this time frame before the rules changed in judo. check it out.
