It's completely different. Physically, you are doing the same thing regular or goofy on a snowboard. You are sideways. It isn't necessarily backward, it's just using your weaker leg as the "anchor" It isn't really all that similar to facing forward or backward. Freestyle skiing just basically came in behind snowboarding and borrowed half pipes, terrain parks, a lot of the style and most of the terminology. Side cut and twin tips were developed first by Elan..which got the idea from Burton.

My skier friends and I talk shit about this often. They used to spend a lot of time playing down snowboarding, until I reminded them that snowboarding revived skiing both stylistically, and technologically. I tested product for Burton in Stowe for a number of years, and watched things unfold. Burton's John Gerndt (JG) is one of the reasons twin tip shaped skis exist. Shared ideas or not, skiing and snowboarding are fundamentally different. You can ski backward,but switch is always sideways

This was on Focused, an awesome extreme sports show on the Rush network. Apparently they were speed testing this jump for 2 hours before the first guy attempted the jump and they started their session. Gotta love where this sport is being taken as each new generation makes its mark and pushes the boundaries.
