regardless of the notes or chords he plays, i've always thought eddie hazel had the best tone ever. just purely the way his guitar sounds is so cool- cuts through the mix but not too trebley, tons of sustain, a sharp attack, and that lazery fuzz. funny though- i was so sure he played a gibson based on that tone, and here he is on a strat...
@Trilobite8jesus Too true... don't get me wrong, this is hot as hell but the licks are very similar through-out, i'm not trying to take anything away from it, and as for ear for subtelty, I do, very much so.
@tintintiritis It's called Cosmic Slop, which is the title track of the album. By the way, "tema" in Spanish is "track" or "song" in English, not topic.
@jzguru You don't want to... it is kinda embarrassing. I don't know anybody who would be able to follow that. It was on youtube years ago, but got taken down

@TitaniousGrubbs Age has nothing to do with whether or not you have good taste. However, the kind of music you listen to is limited to the kind of music that's being created at the time.
@vinnycriss Your last comment is really hypocritial of itself. If age has nothing to do with taste then how does what's being created at the time have an effect on what you listen to? Time period is directly corresponding to age, the only difference is that younger people will alway have a much wider spectrum of music to listen to.
@TitaniousGrubbs Music that you hear today is not as well constructed musically as it was when I was your age. What passes for talent today wouldn't have cut it back them. You simply do not see or hear talent like this - as a rule - today. BY EXTENTION, I will assume that the reason today's music is popular is because today's generation believes it is good music, and thinks these people are musicians. I argue that they are not. There is relatively little creativity outside of the producer.
@vinnycriss My guess is that you are only talking about the music to find on the radio or the top charts. You've always got to look outside the box and find those bands or artists that make real music. Yes there is a lot of no-talent bull shit acts up there, but that is purely from what the media feeds the general public. But even then there will always be the vast archives of great music from the past. So no one can really say that the music of today is terrible, cause we always have yesterday.
Eddie Hazel was so filthy good. George Clinton knew it, too. While Hendrix was "out there" with deep roots in the Blues, Hazel was just gritty and SOOOOO soulful! He was like the nasty, city version of what Hendrix was trying to do.
Eddie you blessed us all wiff juss a touch of LOVE from your God gift he gave you, may u ress in P FunK in Heaven with the LORD, Thank U and Your Fam for allowing us a P funk of U !
@aspiringguitarist91 its standing on the verge of getting it on, later on during the solo you can hear the other guitarist play the main riff behind Eddie, about 2:14.

i love jimi, but i love eddie more he was also a great singer, which jimi was not.i always thought jimi and eddie would have been great together with eddie singing lead.
@mj11572 While Jimi is, well, THE Jimi, i agree with your views. i also feel eddie is a little more melodious in his phrasing. Kind of more harmonious
As Hazel told GP, "I listened to Jimi a lot. It was very uncanny that our styles were alike, but that was what I was hearing inside. I wanted to make the guitar an extension of my singing. My style is really like solo vocalist guitar."
nice comparison. They were both so rhythmic that the blues riffs they utilized were incredibly fluid, seamless and accelerating. Would have loved to hear Hazel cover Stink Foot and Cosmik Debris, and Montana for that matter. shear ripping.
and considering where Hendrix wanted to go with his music (he was in the process of putting together a soul/funk style band with tons of musicians when he died) and the amount of acid he did, eddie and funkadelic were probably the closest thing to a continuation of jimi's legacy as any band out there
Eddie's soul heartaches, joys, pain and "all" comes out of in his guitar playing. A true musicians, musician. John Fruciante is the only other current player who can do the same on this caliber.
you should listen to some of jimis later studio stuff, some released on post death albums but most on bootlegs, the man played the funk like no other, if only he would have lived to explore more genres.
I think the biggest difference between Eddie Hazel and every other guitarist I can think of is the fact that if you listen, every note he ever played, came from his soul! You can hear it if you close your eyes and listen. Check it out...
What makes these artists so good their ability to step back and let the groove continue after their spotlight solos and shit. Why bands haven't understood how to keep this balance in other groups is a mystery to me. Parliament Funkadelic 4 fuckin ever.
You know, it is a F***ing travesty that Eddie and Michael Hampton aren't (or wasn't in Eddie's case) bloody huge megastars who are still worshipped as gods today and have hundreds of millions in the bank.
You'll have to excuse this slight impoliteness but... If I was American, i'd be ashamed.
@torqueing Your a bloke and heres why.. People werent ready for these guys the time they were successful and most of the general music population still isnt.. These musicans were so far ahead of their time musically its insane, the people that love Pfunk have a common bond that most will never understand.. thats why Hazel and Hampton never made Millions, in the big picture they played the funk for the funkateers and not the consumer.. feel me?
I watch this video at leaset once a week just to remind me who this muthafuckka this, and I always get the same answer:He's The Truth, the straight fucking Truth.
I find it kinda interesting most of his picking strokes are down like Hendrix and not alternate when it seems it would be easier to alternate for as fast as some of his playing is. Interesting. I prolly use alternate more than just down picking but what ever feels natural is the key i guess, Either way....One Baddazz solo and scatting

hey every one if you like Eddie hazel you love this rare song i just posted that is the only video of this song ever on youtube. Its call Until It Rains
Dudes on You Tube talk shit and no nothing- Great video!
And I play a ton of funk guitar and honestly Hazel is smoother in in many ways than Hendrix and people should realize Hendrix is great but you cannot obsess about him or you will neglect many great players that sometimes rival him. And with all due respect because Jimi is one of my heroes...
@mardebcin that's what makes YouTube so interesting. first you find these types of literally priceless recordings,.... ain't gonna find this stuff "shopping"; but then you get poster who really know what is happening to post opinions. thanx to mardebcin and Earlbein for offering up opinions and info. 'cause I really like this style of lead guitar and Hazel is one of the best I ever heard. this song in particular is a real treat because this is the best up beat soloing I've heard him do
@1Delta You got it right. There of course is soooo much pathetic stuff here from 12 year old kids and whatnot , but there is the other thing that you point out... and it's great. Accumulation of knowledge. We benefit. That's the Internet. The good part. And yes ... this song is some really great solo! Check out his picking hand. What is he doing there??? Damn!
@Gflyallday thanx for the reply. Took me so long to even find out who the guitarist was on Maggot Brain, that when I finally found out it was a guy named Eddie Hazel, and then got to see the precious few clips of him here on YouTube, well I guess that explains my enthusiasm. The other great guitarists whose live were tragically cut short were Charlie Christian and Tommy Bolin, just to name two of my favorites. With Hazel, he was the first generation post Jimi Hendrix, who was a real shame
what i read was some motown session musicians played on some of the the tracks on the first funkadelic album. on some tracks but not the whole lp. bob babbit(bass), earl van dyke(keyboards) & ray monette(guitar). i dont know if its true but thats what i read. in dave thompson funk, a review book & on the motherpage site. true or false?
@Earlbein I know that Ray Monette from Rare Earth and Dennis Coffey from Motown were on Mommy What's a Funkadelic. Oddly enough Billy Bass took lessons from James Jamerson when they were in Detroit
all this banter back and forth on here its like kids on a playground. the original funkadelic was great, but the later parliament/funkadelic i think was great also. eddie hazel and billy bass both are bad ass players. never dispute that. didnt they both play in the later groups afterwords? i think billy bass played from 94 to04. i met him once or twice during then. i read somewhere that motown sesion players ( bob babbit, bass & earl van dyke, keys) played on the first funkadelic lp . true ?
with this full blown James Brown funkbeat on the one, for you samplers out there, just lay this monster down over any JB epic, and I guarantee you it will fit like a glove!
Here's how I see it. Everyone is entitled to their opinion about anything that's up for debate, but some things are beyond debate. So, if you think Eddie is an awesome guitarist, that's fine (and true), and if you think some people play better than others based on the colour of their skin, that's fine too. But if you believe the latter and think people are wrong to label you a racist, well, unfortunately for you that's one issue that wasn't up for debate.
@JustPassingBy2010 I was wrong. Eddie Hazel is ranked amongst the best. I think he's at # 46-Rolling Stone-which is still way too low becuase he's a whole lot better than most cats out there. Cool page you got there buddy I like it!
@dogshit71 I agree with you Eddie could have held his own with any guitarist out there. But coud most of them held there own with him? I don't think so! Although I still think My man Jimi Hendrix is untouchable.
Fuck yeah!

And with all due respect because Jimi is one of my heroes...
mardebcin 1 year ago

Damn!

@1Delta eddie is sooooooooooooooooooo umderrated
Gflyallday 1 year ago

Earlbein 1 year ago
@Earlbein I know that Ray Monette from Rare Earth and Dennis Coffey from Motown were on Mommy What's a Funkadelic. Oddly enough Billy Bass took lessons from James Jamerson when they were in Detroit
chiknfulio 1 year ago
all this banter back and forth on here its like kids on a playground. the original funkadelic was great, but the later parliament/funkadelic i think was great also. eddie hazel and billy bass both are bad ass players. never dispute that. didnt they both play in the later groups afterwords? i think billy bass played from 94 to04. i met him once or twice during then. i read somewhere that motown sesion players ( bob babbit, bass & earl van dyke, keys) played on the first funkadelic lp . true ?

with this full blown James Brown funkbeat on the one, for you samplers out there, just lay this monster down over any JB epic, and I guarantee you it will fit like a glove!

this guy plays so rhythmically free, that what reminds me of Hendrix. He does throw in some nice quotes from Power of Love through 0:55.
this guy is just plain phenomenal.

a total original. man, I've been looking like crazy for some up close Eddie Hazel, but can't get enough!!!!!!!

Here's how I see it. Everyone is entitled to their opinion about anything that's up for debate, but some things are beyond debate. So, if you think Eddie is an awesome guitarist, that's fine (and true), and if you think some people play better than others based on the colour of their skin, that's fine too. But if you believe the latter and think people are wrong to label you a racist, well, unfortunately for you that's one issue that wasn't up for debate.

the song title name seems to be:
Standing on the Verge of Getting it On,
album title same, but this is just a slower live jam
not including the theme
and there's no long solo in the original
-if i'm not mistaken

@boxingin Agree with , after i watched "Maggot Brain" , Eddie is number 1 in my Book.
JustPassingBy2010 1 year ago
@JustPassingBy2010 I was wrong. Eddie Hazel is ranked amongst the best. I think he's at # 46-Rolling Stone-which is still way too low becuase he's a whole lot better than most cats out there. Cool page you got there buddy I like it!

Eddie was just as good as Jimi with his own style of playing. I'm glad he wasn't a Hendrix imitator, he was just Eddie
dogshit71 1 year ago 38
@dogshit71 I agree with you Eddie could have held his own with any guitarist out there. But coud most of them held there own with him? I don't think so! Although I still think My man Jimi Hendrix is untouchable.
