Ya gotta love these "interviewers" for jazz legends later in their careers. Rock & Pop music did not push jazz aside, the '60's saw a resurgance of hard swinging big band jazz (Herman, Rich, Kenton) and an overall peeked interest in jazz (Dizzy, Miles, Freddie, Oscar Peterson, Clark Terry), the '70's saw the creation of jazz/rock fusion. I don't think jazz was "pushed aside", then again being a "jazzer" my opnion may be biased...
Just the other night I saw an interview with Greg Allman of the Allman Brothers Band. His brother Duane died in a motorcycle accident. The interviewer asked him "Do you remember when you got the call your brother was killed? Is that memory still fresh in your mind"?
I've pretty much come to expect the stupidest questions imaginable when reporters open their mouths.
Direct quote from the interviewer: "What does it take to make a great trumpet player? Got any notion?" WTF? With the possible exception of Louis Armstrong, he is asking the greatest human to ever pick up a trumpet if he knows ANYTHING about what makes a great player. Unreal. Dizzy plays him off beautifully, delaying, then giving him a blow off answer about the need to be a great "shit" detector. The guy has no clue Diz sees he's a fool and is blowing him off.
Charlie Rose? The interviewer sounds like Dick Cavet. Most comments are about the poor job he's doing. Well, compared to what, who else interviewed jazz musicians?
@tommymorey The interviewer's voice does sound a bit like Cavet, but if you know anything about Cavet, this AIN'T Cavet. This guy doesn't have anywhere near Cavet's intelligence and Cavet knows Jazz unlike this clown, so he would never come across this ignorant and disrespectful.
@tommymorey Nobody said the comparison had to be to somebody else these companies had on their payroll who could do a better job. Most of them were incompetent like the one here, with a few exceptions. The comparison is to a standard of excellence. Since the companies that hired jazz interviewers never equated the status of a jazz performer to that of other important individuals, they assigned any idiot to do the interview, critic the music or write the story.
@blackvitruvianman : what dross. Rose is there representing the man in the street..not the opiniated dimwits who know nothing about about interviewing.
You guys are going a little rough on the interviewer. I don't think he means anything by it. It's definitely Charlie Rose. I think he is just trying too hard.
I think this is Charlie Rose - sounds just like him. He has his own style - it grates at first, but then you get used to it. His subjects always seem relaxed & open, so he's doing something right. If it's him...
Totally fair point, but in my opinion, I think on the whole Charlie Rose is pretty good, like a very intelligent Jay Leno type talk show. CRose only flaw is uncorrectable, he will ask stupid questions because he isn't a PRO TRUMPETER, an ALL TIME GREAT. Ie, if any other truly great trumpeter interviewed him, you would hear no stupid questions. Charlie Rose in his defense, he's trying, but man, he's stiff cause he aint jazz trumpeter, i don't think he's a dick, just don't know
Who the fugg is the idiotic interviewer??? Did he actually ask the great Dizzy Gillespie....."what does it take to make a great trumpet player...got any notion?" WTF??? This is clearly a case of Gillespie's magnanimous nature costing him. He completely wasted his time talking to this nit wit.

Charlie Rose is an idiot!! Watch his interview with the great tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson. He is clueless in that interview also.

Why is it that all the greats get interviewed by dicks who ask stupid questions, make silly statements, and cut people off before they're finished!?
