Yes--Betty's once again shaking a mean tambourine. Also, some extra animated shots of Jughead playing the drums. Love these Filmation cartoons. Didn't they also do the animated Star Trek show on NBC Saturday mornings?
@wainoco318 Yes, they did. The Archie related series put Filmation in the spotlight during the early 70's, and they were approached by the Star Trek heads to do an animated series. If it had not been for the popularity of the Archie series, I doubt that Filmation would have been given the contract for Star Trek.
It wasn't. That effect was for the video only. There is additional tambourine in the song, but not the off tempo effect that was added to give Betty's movements more realism. They only added that off-tempo tambourine for a couple of the very first song and dance videos. Then they quit doing it.
@CoolioRockstar These are the same musicians and singers that later performed The Archies' hit "Sugar, Sugar". Ron Dante on lead vocals. There have been several incarnations of The Archies, but the original band was from 1968 to 1972, and released 6 albums. A different Archies band was formed to perform music for the show "U.S. of Archie" in 1974, and another for the show "The New Archie / Sabrina Hour" in 1977. However, neither of these last two bands released any albums.
@CoolioRockstar The best way that I can think of is to purchase a compilation CD or individual album CD of The Archies songs, and then use software to burn the songs to MP3 format. You can then transfer them to your iPod. Also, I believe some of The Archies songs are available on iTunes. Also, Amazon sells all of The Archies albums in digital format now.
I first got to know this song from the "free {flexible} record" printed on the back of a Post Super Sugar Crisp cereal box in late 1968 (that tells you how old I am). That version was taken directly from the first "Archies" LP- no "clunky tambourine" or sound effects dubbed in. And that became my personal favorite of all the songs "The Archies" ever recorded....
You and me both. That was my first taste of Post Super Sugar Crisp, and aside from Life cereal, it was probably the most awful tasting cereal I had ever eaten in my life. But I forced it down to get that first (and second) series of Archies cereal-box records. I was SOOOOOO happy when the third and fourth series were issued on Post Honeycomb and Post Alpha-Bits cereals. I could stomach them.
While there is tambourine in the song on the record, THAT particular effect is not on the record. It was an added effect for the video to sync with Betty's movements (the effect is only heard when Betty is shown). The effect was only done for the first few song videos, then they stopped.
@windsorbear I remember watching this episode on VHS when I was a kid (7 or 8)...and as much as I've always had eyes and ears for detail, I remember the off beat tambourine effect! The Video tape was an official copy from HBO, made in 1978...
@windsorbear YES it was Thorn Emi video (I keep getting the thorn logo confused with HBO). The copy I had was VHS, not Beta. Do you know if they sell this particular song on CD?
@JJRiffy488 Yes. Repertoire Records released The Archies first album (which includes the song "Boys and Girls") on CD a few years ago, including the original album artwork on both the front and back covers. They also added on two bonus tracks of The Archies first single (front and back) in mono format. Overall, a great package. It is still available at Amazon. Just go to Amazon, do a search for Archies, and you will find the album listed as "1st Album". Also available on eBay.
This particular music segment is interesting for two reasons... one, it does not contain the usual "now let's dance it to a brand new song" intro. This may have been the first song produced for the show. Second, the song in the video contains a full second chorus, compared to the same song on the LP which only contains a half second chorus. I have no idea why the second chorus was chopped in half for the LP version. Time limitations on the vinyl, I guess.
i think you can hear the edit cut at 1:46 where they ADD the chorus IN FRONT of the original SECOND chorus...i have the LP and they could have stretched it but I think what the producers did was add MORE time on the cartoon time and that's why they STRETCHED it ...

@JJRiffy488 Yep... originally Thorn-EMI, before they merged their video releases with HBO. I got all four of them on Beta tape.

@windsorbear Maybe missing the "let's dance it" part because -- "The Jughead" never actually appears during the song!
Hot Dog looks a little off-model in a couple places -- wonder why that was?
