  • Ok thats fine, but I am an academic. I study at the University.

  • @MrFremdsprache Naturally you will have to have an undergrad degree to pursue Grad Linguistics. What the point was is that linguistics is far different than a narrow one language approach. Some people who do well in one or two languages will not fare well in linguistics (and vice versa).

To point out an obvious: How much phonology, phonetics, semnatics, social linguistics and descriptive grammar have you already had?

  • @christopheclugston I am not disagreeing but.. the exams for the professional body, Chartered Institute of Linguists, do not expect you to be a scientist - just know languages.

Degree level DIp courses in translation, bilingual communication and interpretation.

On becoming a member you become a chartered linguist.

  • @MrScotchpie There are guilds for Translators and Interpreters (Court, Medical, etc.) while they use languages they are no linguists. Again, the test is if they can do the things that linguists do: describe and document languages, work on A.I. develop Speech Recognition, Publish Articles, obtain Academic posts as linguists--that in itself is the SOLE test. The rest of the people are just arguing for a hackneyed polysemous rendering so they can feel good about themselves.

  • @MrFremdsprache I appreciate the effort you make, but all of your textbooks are pirate copies. As an author, I feel threatened by that fact. Besides, how professional can you be if all of your books are photocopies? Did you appear on Martial Arts Odyssey? you look familiar. Anyway, speaking from a position of pure emotion, I have very strong opinions on language learning and feel frustrated if people confront me with facts, studies or science supporting a contrary opinion.

  • Your kind of up tight about this linguist stuff. Language and linguistics should be FUN! However, you do have a right to be uptight due to your degree. I have a question I'm getting my Bachelors in German, could I then get my masters in Linguistics?

  • @MrFremdsprache Linguistics at graduate level is far different than a specific one language study than a German major, French major, etc. I will be posting more so that non academics can learn more about the field.
