Well in a way all ressions are lie that. things can only recover when people feel safe to spend their money.
But thats also part of the problem. The large we built was built on credit. As soon as the credit the jobs dried up, the money dried up and then the credit card companies, banks, and consumers started to pull back, reposes and everything blew up.
"It's hard to identify with poor when you're rich!!"
Isn't possible that the rich were formerly poor and pulled themselves up because they depended on themselves? Now tell me, why should my hard earned tax money have to go to people who CHOSE not to pay their homes in the first place? Aren't we teaching them irresponsibility and to our kids? I mean how do we PREVENT this crisis from happening?
johngonole; if unemployment was 0.0%, if we would conserve energy instead of wasting it on cars that only get 10m.p.g.,and if real wages kept pace with real costs, than we wouldn't be whining, would we?!
The very fact that American's are whiners is what lead to these economic problems. We don't want to drill for oil but we also want cheap oil. Americans always want things both ways. We are whiners. We are near full employment and if things aren't perfect the nation whines. If the government doesn't take care of all our needs we whine. Are prices up and wages stagnating. Are we waiting in long lines to buy toilet paper. NO...so quite whining things aren't that bad.
Neither john mccain or obama can save you from high gas prices. If we had been drilling for our oil and investing in alternatives 10 years ago we wouldn't be paying as much. Since both renewables and safe offshore drilling is more possible today than 10 years ago, lets do something now, so that 10 years from now we are not paying $8 a gallon.
McCain supports investing in renewables, offshore drilling and nuclear. Obama just favours supporting renewables.. We need all 3 !!! and to think long term
HAHAHAHHAHA BAHAHAHAH this is almost like a trick statement by McCain. he calls the US a nation of whiners, and what do we do in response? we whine. rofl. we proved he's right, and most people are too fucking retarded to notice.
Yeah you're right we shouldn't say anything we should just take it. Where do we get off wanting our country to survive and prosper when all our grandparents and greatgrandparents did was toil and die so we could have a better life than they did. If you believe that we should not speak out when things are wrong then you should do away with our freedom of speech while you're at it. You have no clue what a proud, honest and certainly hard working American is so keep your comments to yourself.
whining got us into this mess in the first place. if you had even a basic understanding of economics you would realize that its a self full filling prophecy, and whats acting like a little bitch gonna do to stop the problems? and then to go on and say I should do away with freedom of speech? I am an honest hard working american and I love freedom of speech, and nothing in my original comment would lead you to believe otherwise. its obvious you were just looking for a way to call me out.
What made me call you out was your obvious intellect and astounding grammar in your original comment. However, I would like to point out that your feeble antagonistic language does nothing to support your opinion. Try to use some big words so as not to nullify your point. Finally, one thing is for sure you won't be heard if you fail to begin to speak.
please, arguments are best fought with facts. your most recent comment is a personal insult to my apparently "limited" vocabulary. but I dont think I need to use big words to point out the fact that you are an idiot. if you think that saying words like nullify and feeble will make your side of this issue any more credible then you are sadly mistaken, because they are both redundant. so comment again, except this time, try to back up your argument with an actual topic instead of personal attacks.
no I mean the personal attacks where you dont even refer to the argument. the personal attacks where you call me out on my grammar but dont actually defend yourself against the points I'm making. the personal attacks that you use, probably to swerve away from the argument. grammar doesnt make you right. if you gave an elaborate explanation laced with unnecessary vocabulary words in an attempt to explain that 2+2=5, you would still be wrong. so I'm waiting. say something relevant.

Everything in our society is man made...so of course everything is altered by human behavior. If EVERYBODY stops spending at one time...you have a recession or even a depression. The reverse is the same if people spend...
But if the government spends incredibly foolishly....you can also have a recession.
The $4, to fill up your tank is a problem, but they pay more in Canada, England, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Netherlands.. Those countries have higher unemployment than America too. Lets remember that Obama says that he wished gas prices rose gradually..but that he thought high gas prices were good because they changed habits.. Does that mean he is out of touch?
With the exception of Canada, no one needs to own a car in those countries. So it doesn't matter how much gas costs. here it's different and it didn't help when GM colluded with the oil companies and dismantled so much of our rail transit in the 1930s.
mmm413 you had never seen a homeless person before the 1980's GIVE ME A BREAK!! LOL... the ordinary person did fine in the 1980's, and they rewarded Reagan with a landslide victory, he almost won all 50 states and his vice president, Bush won the next election in another landslide. If Americans were doing badly, they wouldnt have rewarded the republicans with two back to back victories. And again, America has economic problems, but we are doing better than most western countries
bad politics but true. The media makes it seem like america is in the depression. 5.5% unemployment is NOT a recession or a depression, it is not historically high, and is lower than most of the western industrialized world. Lower than in Canada, France, Germany,Italy,Poland,Sweden,Russia,India etc.. Come on people America has had far worse days.
The unemployment rate is at 5.5 b/c people have given up after their unemployment benefits ran out or have started their own home-based business. You need to learn how that rate is determined. America is in its worst days. This is worse than the 1980's.
oh yeah the terrible 1980's..when millions were starving and times were so bad that they re-elected a right wing president with a 49 state landslide.. America is going through some tough times, but she will pull through. Obama isnt going to save America or bring any new ideas. McCain isnt going to have a major effect either. Times are not horrible, unemployment and homelessness are not going to effect tens of millions of americans.
What? Were you 12? The 80's were terrible unless you were multi-millionaires. Not only that but Reagan had the most corrupt administration since Harding (maybe Nixon). I'd never seen a homeless person until the "glorious" 80's. Now they're just a given.
hey McWeak as a student of psychology and business I can be blunt and say there is no question that Your Problems Are Psychological and You Are Insane if You Believe Your Own Lies.
John McCain will raise your taxes.
Barack Obama will lower your taxes most likly double what McCain will. Its not like McCain flip flopped on Bush's tax cuts though. Oh yeah he flips and flops on every issue everyday and then lies about it. wow worse than Bush. Who woulda thought.
Phil Gramm hit the nail on the head, America IS a nation of whiners. As he said before, there are too many people sitting on the wagon and not enough people pulling it. Its a shame McCain won't stand by his man.
Unfortunately, we still have to vote for McCain because the only other option is that psychopath Obama, who actually supports partial birth abortion - which involves dismembering unborn babies and crushing their skulls...
you pro-lifer are so fucken dumb. there are other issues in the world besides abortion. for you loosers no other issue seems to matter. you are the real whiners.
Wtf are you tlaking about? So the 4 dollars i pay to fill up my car is in my head? The people losing their houses and filing bankruptcy is all a made up? I think you need to rethink what you said because this would hurt Mccain if he agreed to this which he probably does.
Wow, Haven't heard such an illiterate, half-baked bunch of crap from youtube posters in quite a while. You actually believe the 'media' is creating a 'psychological' economic crisis?
Really? You think it's psychological?
My bet is that no one who believes that has had even a basic economics 101 class. The economy doesn't give a damn about psychology, you dimwits are thinking of the stock market, not the economy.
what we got is a psychological problem alright. the problem is mccain is a wacko nut job. recently he told a pittsburg tv station that he recited the starting line-up for the steelers defensive line, (the steel curtain), while under interrogation in north vietnam, rather than give up the names of his buddies. unfortunately, the steel curtain defense was post vietnam. in his book, and in the a&e tv movie, it was the packers. oops:
There is a tremendous psychological component to the economy. The media has been trying to undermine the confidence of American people in the economy. According to them, we have been in a recession since President Bush took office. Technically, we are NOT in a recession now.
By not appointing a sissy like Phil Gramm to any position of power - that is how! We don't need crybabies in power - which Phil Gramm has proven himself to be. Anyone who earn an economics degree under Phil Gramm - let me file that for them in the Trash can because that is what Gramm's opinion is worth.
I have to take Obama at his word that he will put Americans first over the mandates made in the trade agreements. I feel Biden is racist towards other countries and their workers which is alright by me. I feel Biden alone will be pro-American Working class which McCain, by having Carly Fiorina and Phil Gramm on his ticket, would be anything but. Sometimes you have to look at the team and make a gamble. Carly and Phil are not pro-American.
"So it seems you don't know what he'll dom, no wonder he won. The rest of your comment is going off to an irrelevant tangent." Tangent - "Nation of whiners" was not only a temper tantrum but a completely stupid ignorant thing to say. We know what Gramm stands for. We know that Biden is pro-American Worker. That isn't an ignorant vote. I don't vote for girliemen: Larry Craig, Mark Foley, or Phil Gramm, which are all one in the same.
How can I list his accomplishments in a textbox that is limited to 500 characters and will not display links? Would amendment numbers make you happy? I am happy that Phil Gramm isn't part of Obama's staff, plain and simple. The economy is going to be hard to fix after years of Greenspan, Gramm, and Bush philosophy. We don't need a sissy as an economic adviser.
Nothing like taking a person's words out of context. Yes, Phil Graham is right. The American people are mostly whiners. They will gladly pay $4 for a Starbucks coffee, while complaining about $4 gas. The Media has created much of the concern people have about the economy. For example, the housing "crisis" is not really a crisis. The U.S. foreclosure rate in January was one filing for every 534 homes. That translates to about 3.5 percent of all homes. How is that a crisis?
You missed my point. Starbucks has been opening new locations at an unbelievable rate. Sure, higher gas prices will effect them as well as everybody else. They are now closing stores they never should have opened. Just like people losing their homes who never should have brought one in the first place. These things happen in our economy. They hardly constitute a real crisis. However they are part of one manufactured by the Democrats.
We should all be as industrious to leave our faithful wives to marry some rich heiress whose father got his money the old fashion way, by illegally falsifying liquor records and only getting convicted of a felony once before buying up the necessary politicians. That's what McCain did. Stop whining!
So this whole mess is a figment of my imagination? Damn, I must have a good imagination, because every time I go to the gas pump, I imagine that it's over 4 bucks a gallon.
Do you people ever make any decisions for yourselves??? Why is it the media only shows Obama and Mccain? All I'm asking for is the truth! And you should be also! Look at both of these guys voting records and know really what they stand for. You have more choices than just the media made 'popular' runners. This is no joke, our freedom is at stake. I do not take this lightly. God Bless
Factories are shutting down and jobs are going over sea's, If you got a job or two and are doing well of course you dont see it.
I doubt you take the time to care or even try to understand when life is good for you.
But people are having a hard time especially were the job market isn't doing so well in there region.
To look at people who have dedicated themselves to there company and country and call them whiners when they get screwd is total B.S. Hope you dont get mugged on the way home.
umm... I do believe this quote was taken a bit out of context, but Phil Gramm is not far from the truth. Obviously there are elements of this economy that are material and need addressing but for the most part, we Americans are spoiled on technology and peace so now we are bitching and moaning over basically nothing. Discrimination this and unfair that. Quit whining, the world isn't fair. Oh and for what its worth technically we are not in a recession as the media would like you to believe.
I hate to break the news to you Bush Hating Bastards, but a Recession in 2 back to back quarters of negative GDP, we haven't had one negative quarter of GDP.
So, we are not in a recession,
I know how bad you stupid ass Leftist Bastards want to be though, so Team Bush will get the blame.....
GDP doesn't prove shit, on how things are actually going for people. GDP is outdated and doesn't measure quality of life or social factors. GDP just measures economic performance.
bella2334, your an idiot. With Groceries up 40% from last year, gas at $4/gallon, the dollar worth about half of the euro, and the list goes on, I really don't understand how anybody, who isn't super rich, can have your position (or maybe don't support yourself.) Either way, it doesn't really matter, you have absolutely no grasp of the real world.
Yah hasn't been this bad since the Clinton administration. Funny how things started to go bad just as soon as the Democrats took the House and Senate.
I agree with Phil Gramm. All we've heard for ever has been this wining mantra from the Left that we are in or on the verge of a recession. A convenient play to the ill-informed, which it just so happens are the ones who might be the least skilled at navigating financially in society. It still isn't true, as correctly defined. There will always be folks that have financial woes, even in the best of times. These unfortunate examples do not a recession make. Just more exploitation by the Left.
When we actually are in a recession, it will be thanks to the Left and their allies on the Right that it will be shown, once again, all to have been at the front of the line when it came to handing out junk loans, starving our economy of oil, capitulating in time of war, encouraging free invasion of the homeland, expanding government, etc...... Whine, whine, whine.....
Umm, the major disasters that are the big drag on the economy were created by big bets in the derivatives markets, along with the enormous drag the war costs and debt are putting on the dollar. None of the problems have anything to do with low-skilled labor doing anything different than they've ever done.
Those that say we are not in a recession are retards..banks are going under right and left...house prices are still WAY over priced and real inflation is over 10%...something has to be done and printing more money is just going to make it worse..
McCain made a lame joke when asked if he was still considering Gramm for Treasury Secretary, as has been widely reported. He said Gramm should be considered for Ambassador to Belarus, which is an old joke for banishing someone to the worst post. Like Gramm would give up his cushy Swiss banking position for anything but Treasury.
Belarus, sometimes known as White Russia, is a country in east central europe near russia, poland, lithuania etc. After Sen.Graham made his statement, McCain had a press con. where he said that he's considering Graham for a job as ambassador to Belarus - a joke indicating that the only job Graham will get now will be meaningless and unimportant position.
We are a **culture** of whiners. America, Canada, the UK, France, Australia, the ENTIRE first world! Not because of any reason those Republican asses might have in their heads, and not because of the economy. We live in an aggrandized mental state pushed down our throats since we're born by major corporations that want us to think we can do whatever we want if we just wish for it so that we'll BUY whatever we want from them. =P Sorry.
vote for freedom vote for bob barr and get our economy rolling AGAIN this nation is a nation of whiners and Obama has NO SOLUTIONS. Phil Gramm was right. Mccain was an idiot not to support his advisor Gramm. . Shame on Mccain
do NOT vote for Mccain or Obama . they are both losers and media darlings. the american people deserve to hear the truth. Vote for Bob Barr but if you are a lefty vote for nader.
The point is if mccain wins we are going further in the hole people. Lets at least give Obama a chance. If he doesnt do anything we are destyned to get fucked. IT IS A FACT THAT MCCAIN IS BUSH THIRD TERM. IF YOU VOTE FOR MCCAIN YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO COMPLAIN ABOUT ANYTHING GOING ON AMERICA! IT WILL GET WORSE IF MCCAIN WINS! THINK PEOPLE!
hahahaha I'm going to buy antidepres pills, maybe I feel better....and for breakfast I will have more antidepres medicacion ....oh boy what a day.........
I do believe you need a show on prime time television. Everything you say is so relevant and true. Now I know, but I wasn't voting for McCain in the first place. The mainstream media does a pretty horrible job at attacking McCain for what he says. If more people got the hear what you say we would be so much better off.
Confidence does play a part in the economy, at least. Its hard to tell from these comments just how much Gramm and McCain think our economy NEEDS any attention, which is the real issue.
Seems like Gramm & McCain have been (unknowingly) warning Americans on how they're caught in the middle of media psychological-warfare. Jedi Mind-Trick. Like Eddie Murphy did w/ Mr. T... Real Americans (the Mr. T) would say, "Imma go beat up those democrats for tellin' lies & helping to destroy our Bill of Rights this week! The media (the Eddie Murphy) says, "No, you're not." The American sheep then say, "Maybe I won't... Imma go find that fool that told me them lies, unnnnngh!". Simple as that.
Everyone must stand up the the NWO! Everyone must not buy into the media and their lies that they spew forth. Everyone must know that Bush was a traitor of the American people that took away some of our constitutional rights and put the US citizens economy into shams. Our dollar is worth less than the Canadians now, and thats because we need to borrow so much money for the WAR..
Cenk, what's wrong with you? You're mostly framing this like the conservative hacks by treating it as another gaffe. You only marginally mentioned the main point, which is that Gramm is the architect of all the disastrous deregulation that led to rampant reckless speculation. It's Enron and mortgage bubbles followed by the current oil speculation bubble. All enabled by derivatives drawing enormous amounts of capital. We don't need more of a bubble economy.
GrownupPhan you make an excellent point. The fact that McCain has enlisted Phil Gramm, of all people, as his principle economic advisor and calls him "America's leading economist" tells you how truly out of touch the man is. Phil Gramm is to economics what Dan Quayle is to spelling and G.W. Bush is to statecraft.
Another four to eight years of these clowns and we're sunk.
I am for regulation but one thing we need to oppose is bailing out the mortgage lenders since they CHOSE to give all these low rates. I hope you agree that you, as the taxpayer, believe it's unfair to rescue somebody that made a predictable. They do need to learn for their mistakes.
If Phil Gramm becomes advisor after John McCain becomes president, lord help us all. He's got connections to things that would make him like another Dick Cheney.
They just have to repeat those quotes about the recession being psychological again and again, add on "I don't know much about the economy" and he will go down.
Aw man you would think they would report news on our interest, cause if they did they would be replaying all of these quotes like"na na na not god bless America GOD damn America" it seemed every time i turn the t.v on i heard that phrase. So i feel you on that news is entertainment not valuable info for peoples lively hood
Its 2011 and I am still hallucinating McCain.

My bet is that no one who believes that has had even a basic economics 101 class. The economy doesn't give a damn about psychology, you dimwits are thinking of the stock market, not the economy.
Good grief, how ignorant can you get?
shaire99 3 years ago 2
what we got is a psychological problem alright. the problem is mccain is a wacko nut job. recently he told a pittsburg tv station that he recited the starting line-up for the steelers defensive line, (the steel curtain), while under interrogation in north vietnam, rather than give up the names of his buddies. unfortunately, the steel curtain defense was post vietnam. in his book, and in the a&e tv movie, it was the packers. oops:
watch?v=OYsPuaMzW3g
yup it's a psychological, even pathological.
dynovideoz 3 years ago
There is a tremendous psychological component to the economy. The media has been trying to undermine the confidence of American people in the economy. According to them, we have been in a recession since President Bush took office. Technically, we are NOT in a recession now.
4951WEDDEL 3 years ago
Vote Obama before McCain makes the economy even worst. Forget a Recession, I'm talking about entering a Depression.
FrankTube27 3 years ago
OK, how will Obama make our economy better?
unknownunknowns 3 years ago
By not appointing a sissy like Phil Gramm to any position of power - that is how! We don't need crybabies in power - which Phil Gramm has proven himself to be. Anyone who earn an economics degree under Phil Gramm - let me file that for them in the Trash can because that is what Gramm's opinion is worth.
ChicagoJoe57 3 years ago
Obviously, but again, what things, besides not appointing Gramm, will Obama do to make the economy better?
unknownunknowns 3 years ago
I have to take Obama at his word that he will put Americans first over the mandates made in the trade agreements. I feel Biden is racist towards other countries and their workers which is alright by me. I feel Biden alone will be pro-American Working class which McCain, by having Carly Fiorina and Phil Gramm on his ticket, would be anything but. Sometimes you have to look at the team and make a gamble. Carly and Phil are not pro-American.
ChicagoJoe57 3 years ago
"I have to take Obama at his word that he will put Americans first over the mandates made in the trade agreements."
So it seems you don't know what he'll dom, no wonder he won. The rest of your comment is going off to an irrelevant tangent
unknownunknowns 3 years ago
"So it seems you don't know what he'll dom, no wonder he won. The rest of your comment is going off to an irrelevant tangent." Tangent - "Nation of whiners" was not only a temper tantrum but a completely stupid ignorant thing to say. We know what Gramm stands for. We know that Biden is pro-American Worker. That isn't an ignorant vote. I don't vote for girliemen: Larry Craig, Mark Foley, or Phil Gramm, which are all one in the same.
ChicagoJoe57 3 years ago
No, no, no. Why should I talk to you? You didn't anwswer my question, unfortunately, but I don't see how Obama will fix this economy.
unknownunknowns 3 years ago
How can I list his accomplishments in a textbox that is limited to 500 characters and will not display links? Would amendment numbers make you happy? I am happy that Phil Gramm isn't part of Obama's staff, plain and simple. The economy is going to be hard to fix after years of Greenspan, Gramm, and Bush philosophy. We don't need a sissy as an economic adviser.
ChicagoJoe57 3 years ago
Nothing like taking a person's words out of context. Yes, Phil Graham is right. The American people are mostly whiners. They will gladly pay $4 for a Starbucks coffee, while complaining about $4 gas. The Media has created much of the concern people have about the economy. For example, the housing "crisis" is not really a crisis. The U.S. foreclosure rate in January was one filing for every 534 homes. That translates to about 3.5 percent of all homes. How is that a crisis?
4951WEDDEL 3 years ago
Its a good job Americans don't live in the UK. With most things you just replace the sign.
We pay about £1.20 (ish) for a litre of Petrol (gas), which is approximately 4 Litres in a Gallon.
£4.80 for a Gallon in the UK = $8 - $9.
I hope the symbols worked right.
atotti2000 3 years ago
Except starbucks just had to lay off tons of workers. And it is a crisis you simply don't understand what relative means. That is a lot of people.
rewindsf49 3 years ago

Blac13 3 years ago
Oh and for what its worth technically we are not in a recession as the media would like you to believe.

bella2334, your an idiot.
You may be a whiner...but I'm a realist.

Yah hasn't been this bad since the Clinton administration. Funny how things started to go bad just as soon as the Democrats took the House and Senate.
g699a 3 years ago
I agree with Phil Gramm. All we've heard for ever has been this wining mantra from the Left that we are in or on the verge of a recession. A convenient play to the ill-informed, which it just so happens are the ones who might be the least skilled at navigating financially in society. It still isn't true, as correctly defined. There will always be folks that have financial woes, even in the best of times. These unfortunate examples do not a recession make. Just more exploitation by the Left.
g699a 3 years ago
When we actually are in a recession, it will be thanks to the Left and their allies on the Right that it will be shown, once again, all to have been at the front of the line when it came to handing out junk loans, starving our economy of oil, capitulating in time of war, encouraging free invasion of the homeland, expanding government, etc...... Whine, whine, whine.....
g699a 3 years ago
Umm, the major disasters that are the big drag on the economy were created by big bets in the derivatives markets, along with the enormous drag the war costs and debt are putting on the dollar. None of the problems have anything to do with low-skilled labor doing anything different than they've ever done.

GrownupPhan 3 years ago
I still don't get it... is Belarus a real place?
osiris33 3 years ago
Belarus, sometimes known as White Russia, is a country in east central europe near russia, poland, lithuania etc. After Sen.Graham made his statement, McCain had a press con. where he said that he's considering Graham for a job as ambassador to Belarus - a joke indicating that the only job Graham will get now will be meaningless and unimportant position.

Not because of any reason those Republican asses might have in their heads, and not because of the economy. We live in an aggrandized mental state pushed down our throats since we're born by major corporations that want us to think we can do whatever we want if we just wish for it so that we'll BUY whatever we want from them. =P Sorry.

Cheapz5 3 years ago
Everyone must stand up the the NWO! Everyone must not buy into the media and their lies that they spew forth. Everyone must know that Bush was a traitor of the American people that took away some of our constitutional rights and put the US citizens economy into shams. Our dollar is worth less than the Canadians now, and thats because we need to borrow so much money for the WAR..
gmoliveira814 3 years ago

4951WEDDEL 3 years ago
Cenk, what's wrong with you? You're mostly framing this like the conservative hacks by treating it as another gaffe. You only marginally mentioned the main point, which is that Gramm is the architect of all the disastrous deregulation that led to rampant reckless speculation. It's Enron and mortgage bubbles followed by the current oil speculation bubble. All enabled by derivatives drawing enormous amounts of capital. We don't need more of a bubble economy.
GrownupPhan 3 years ago 3
GrownupPhan you make an excellent point. The fact that McCain has enlisted Phil Gramm, of all people, as his principle economic advisor and calls him "America's leading economist" tells you how truly out of touch the man is. Phil Gramm is to economics what Dan Quayle is to spelling and G.W. Bush is to statecraft.
Another four to eight years of these clowns and we're sunk.
thucy2 3 years ago 2
I am for regulation but one thing we need to oppose is bailing out the mortgage lenders since they CHOSE to give all these low rates. I hope you agree that you, as the taxpayer, believe it's unfair to rescue somebody that made a predictable. They do need to learn for their mistakes.
