  • I swear I hear an ARP Avatar guitar synth in there....

  • god......not heard this for ages!!!! I loved it when i was about 11 and still do now. I had a cassette of it that my dad copied from one of his mates vinyl records. Only a youtube video of the Genesis history remined me of Ant and hence this youtube search.

  • 1984 is an under rated synth master piece once you get past the opening (overly cutesy) cut. Never could understand why it went un-noticed compared to other works by JM Jarre, Kitaro or Michael Oldfield at the time. I'm trying to figure out what synths he used: definitely Prophet 5 in there. Might be hearing some Korg Polysix and Roland Jupiters.

  • Personally, I am PROUD of all of US — the fans who have supported Ant Phillips — because we have allowed him to make the beautiful music we have had the pleasure of hearing. My life is much richer for having found Ant's music. My musical "birth" would not have been possible if it were not for him. May it continue on into eternity!

  • Great Ive bought the vinyl album for a few cents at a German flea market in 1984 (sic!) and always loved this underrated record!

  • @mikew4001 I am SO jealous! I bought this album when it first came out and would LOVE to still own it. Listen to it and love it for what it is: a great musician using what was available at the time to create big, fat progressive sounding music.

  • I know that poor Ant has been plagued by his decision to leave Genesis for all of his life. I personally think he did a great thing, giving us DECADES of beautiful music of his own. He should be proud. Although I think he would have sounded absolutely brilliant on an album like Foxtrot or Nursey Cryme.

  • YEAH, I'm the only person I know who ever heard of this album, and all my friends are musicians and aficianados. I got it accidentally in a used bin in the 80s and loved it from the first listen. It's really strong.

  • A lovely private bit of music that nobody knows about. Anthony Philips embraces the whole burgeoning synthesizer technology of the time and creates classical music with it. I just know there are scores of Prog Rock fans out that have never heard this masterpiece and it saddens me - a bit.

  • Just a great piece. I found this as a cassett tape in the cut out section of Peaches Records way back in the 80's. I had always loved early Genesis and wanted find out what Anthony was like. You can jsut sit back and listen to 1984 and clear your head.

Check out out "Slow Dance" another of his great works that play so clear

  • it names pastoralmusic,

ant is still great.....shit, that genesis lost this guy in this earlier time

  • Very interesting music by the first "Genesis" guitar player.

  • This is a brilliant album from start to finish! Not easy for an instrumental rock album to achieve this and maintain your interest all the way through. Wonderful stuff.

  • I would never have guessed he left Genesis because of stage fright ! What a shame a great talent.Plus the fact he left them just as they were breaking out big time.

  • i use to have the lp and thought it was great -other people took no notice or seemed to hate it -i 'm listening now -it's great !!!!

  • This is a "chef d'oeuvre".

    Must listen ...

  • @wolenweider YES INDEED!!!!!!

  • @wolenweider : Especially 1984 part 1 & 2 ! Yes, the drum box sounds old, but Anthony Phillips shows us he's a fantastic composer !

  • This is truly a nice piece of music.

  • This is good music!
