Yeah of course every drummer who watches this can see that Charlie is technically way out of his depth...but does that really matter.
Speed and flashy rolls aren't what moves the groove guys...ask all those that have been to all The Stones concerts and danced there arses off.
Charlie is a humble, warm , non flashy stick twirling drummer who produces the beats necessary to drive Jagger's and Richard's compositions that have rocked many a stadium around the world !
As classy and tasteful Charlie Watts is, the man has absolutely ZERO chops. I doubt he could play a proper double stroke roll to save his life. But as humble as he is I think he would be the first one to admit this. He never ever made himself out to be better than he is, and always promoted other players than himself. Pure class.
It looks like Charlie is intimidated by the other two drummers. He starts a little lick in the breaks but really chokes and ends up playing some pretty stiff and stilted stuff. Now worries though because out of the three drummers up there, Charlie is probably the only millionaire, earning his millions by his drumming!

There is absolute no doubt CHARLIE IT'S THE GREATEST ROCK 60 and 70 DRUMMER IN THE WORLD... All the drummers ar backup when hi is up there. Charlie WE LOVE YOU!
As much as I enjoy and respect subtle musicality, I'm afraid I find Charlie Watts generally underwhelming. I've noted the remarks below of his style not being "flashy" and it's an adjective I've used in defence of Ringo Starr against his detractors. But I think the one time a drummer not only has licence to, but perhaps ought to pull the stops out a little is for a "Drum Extravaganza". It doesn't require a show-off to play technically impressive and interesting fills.
Well done on the pissy remark. I always welcome enlightenment, even if I'm forced to eat my words in the process. But you've opted for sneering and sloppily repetitive metaphors.
Charlie's hero was Dave Tough. Dave Tough was beloved as one of the greats of jazz drumming. He played with Goodman and Woody Herman (amoung others). Like, Charlie, he prefered to just swing rather than solo. No big deal. Just enjoy.
Give me the Animal vs Buddy Rich drumming contest any day! Naaaah, kidding. Really enjoyed this, especially Jools coming back in on piano @ 2.44 ..... playing off-key!
CHARLIE !!!!! ..he truly has style and one hell of a unique style. WATTS really teases like being 'lazy' but sjitttttt, there's that built-in swiss clockwork that sets his GREATEST GROUP ON EARTH and jazzy bands right on time: He absolutely is one of the coolest people on the planet ;-)
this video is SOO COOL !! but ... CHARLIE.. o my gooddd , REALLY don't have the talent to play with this guys !! one of the worse musitian i have ever heard in my life !!! sorry...
Thank you a million times over for posting this! I've been looking for this video ever since I discovered the internet! My favourite drumming clip with my favourite drummer (Gilson Lavis)!

For all the negative posts about Charlie's drumming, I strongly suggest that you listen to the "Jamming with Edward" cd. He's amazing.

Since Watts didn't even plunge into a proper solo, I believe the reason of his appearance on the show was only promotional.

Obviously, you don't know anything about a one-handed roll! Good luck with your life, living in the cave of life before "Let It Bleed.:
