Lincoln's solution was an emergency one and would never work in larger scale, it's still a fiat money system.

The gold standard is something that spontaneously evolved on the market, because gold was accepted worldwide so debating whether it's good or bad is irrelevant. The market forces (which represent people) want it that way, it's not directed and monopolized by government like all other fiat money systems.
