A true pastafarian need only bring pirate regalia...however....that being said....I commend this man for going the extra noodle to show his love for all carbohydrates complex.
So he perjured himself. I say that because, nobody really believes in "pastafarianism". Anybody who discusses the FSM is aware that it isn't real, that was the whole point of making it up. Furthermore, while lots of things are written about it, there's no official doctrine of Pastafarianism that says anything about head gear. The atheist in me finds the whole thing funny, that he got away with it, but I'm rather disappointed in the court that allowed it through, based on nonsense.
@BiggestOfDaddies You do realize that religion doesn't necessitate literal belief? & Your right every one knows that true pastafarianism requires it's practitioners to wear full pirate regalia, this man is following a false profit.
I suppose not. I often correlate religion with church. I was referring to the organized, collective, faith of people as governed by doctrine. But just because you claim a religion, doesn't mean that the law adhere's to it. I mean, at this point, if the government recognizes his religion to the point where he's allowed the exception of "head gear" in photos, next he gets, what, tax exemption? No matter how you cut it, "pastafarianism" isn't a religion. It's a mockery of religions.
@BiggestOfDaddies Even then their are churches that don't require to take any story parable or supernatural even or entity literally. Are you stating that the state should get to decide what is & isn't a legitimate religion?By what criteria will they decide? By whether or not they agree with it? & all religions mockeries of religion.
There wasn't a court battle about whether or not Niko Alm was allowed to have a picture of him wearing a strainer on his DL photo. He had come across a brochure of the Austrian Traffic ministry, implying that no headgear will be allowed on DL photos with the exception of religious headgear.
The Austrian law however does not contain such a paragraph. And that is exactly what Austrian government sources now throw in as an argument why they finally gave in. Still a victory!
I think it is a great thing, just to show how obsurd it is. In my State you can't wear a hat, but you can wear a wig. Why shouldn't they have to take their wig off to get the picture taken?
Beautiful, just beautiful. Although I find FSM distasteful (I don't like my spagetti moving on the plate), I fully respect their rights. Jedi should also be rewarded the same ... If I see a jedi walking down the street I'll be much more likely to bow and salute than seeing a cardinal.
It is another step secured in the eventual recognition of Pastafarianism, as a fully recognized religion.
Someday if we keep fighting the good fight, we Pastafarians (atheists) will someday receive equality, and all the TAX BENEFITS, afforded to us as a legitimate recognized religion.
Sunday worship of the FSM where indoctrination in Evolution, Naturalism, Science, Astronomy, equality, inclusion.... Doctors without Borders will be our Missionaries.
There were three options: 1) denying pastafarianism is a religion, hopefully making it easier to question other religions, 2) the obvious absurdity to allow strainers, 3) removing the old special treatment for other religions.
The didn't chose 1. If it's because they think other religions could actually become questionable, that's a small win, although it's saddening to call their rather looking like fools a win.
Minor point. The "Confessional reasons" bit seems to be causing confusion.
It's a little bit of a mistranslational. "Konfessionell" in German is used in this context simply to mean "religious".
It's a little like the confusion a while back when the the Pope was reported as saying that contraception may be OK for male prostitutes when in fact his use of the male plural for prostitute simply meant "a group of mixed or unknown gender".
@gothatfunk well, actually it isnt. you have to show some numbers in terms of members and such. the last official recognised religion here in austria were the jehovas witnesses. with such a recognition come a few privileges, like the right to collect taxes from the member, the right to indoctrinate the children of your members in schools (religious classes here are about indoctrination and do i have to mention, that of course the state pays the teachers).
There is a massive schism in the Pastafarian movement, between those who say a sieve should be used and those who believe a colander should be the chapeau de jour. :-)
@steelhamster - Neither of those groups are true believers, if you truly believe you would have the faith to strain with your own hands..... All hail his noodley goodness.
its a bizarro-world story thats full of laughter.
i would say win, for the man has shown a flaw on equal rights.
next i hope we can find someone who has two homo-sexuals making out and/or having sex , printed on a headscarf, to do the same thing, just to piss off more people.
though i wonder which religion we would need to invent to make that happen...
This story brings tears to my eyes, what a brave Pastafarian! He fought against persecution by the majority, he fought for equal rights- may FSM shower him in hot saucy blessings! This man is an inspiration to all Pastafarians!
Yes, this is a victory. A victory to show people of all religions how silly it truly is to put the label 'my religion says so' on every single thing that they want different JUST for themselves and no one else.
Damn thing is a joke, and don't get me wrong I support human rights but by the way you put it, it sounded like they were using their religious headgear as a shield to covet their crime and expect leniency to win over a judge You do the crime you do the time
@gunnerdan70 Umm what? It was about the driver license picture which were the face was perfectly visible and biometric face detection would work fine.
Well, bitch that I am, the first thing I would have to do is find out if the story is actually true and fairly represented, even though I would tend to take your word for it.
But if it is true, the judge should have told the man that he has to wear the strainer at all times and if he is ever caught in public or driving his car without it, he will be cited for contempt of court.
This really could be a dangerous precedent. Burkas will be next, and that WON'T be a joke.
Its stupid, but it cleverly highlights how stupid it is to give people special exceptions for religious reasons. Maybe if more of us pulled this kind of stunt, people would rethink these religious exceptions.
it's stupid that instead of correcting the flaw they extend it to include pastifarianism
Solution would be to change the constitution from freedom of religion to freedom of believe, the latter allows you to believe but restrict it still, no need to make exceptions for certain believes, as not allowing certain practices does not infringe on the right to believe they should still be done
Wait, this should also mean, that Muslim women can be pictured for license wearing burka or doesn't it?
At some point this may lead to a religion, that prohibits giving away any personal info, like DNA, fingerprints or any picture, perhaps even the persons "real name" should be kept secret (so it can't be used for witchcraft by enemies).
So, it's a victory for ridiculing religion, but that's about it, because real religions can be more ridiculous than the jokes on them.
Hilarious on all levels, firstly because a court has indirectly officiated Pastafarianism as a religion. Secondly because it's now an officially recognised headgear for the religion and thirdly because some official took it seriously enough to try and prevent him from wearing the pasta strainer and then officially recognise it.
"AHEM" There once was a man from Austria Who liked to worship pasta When he saw the injustice He grabbed a holy bucket and had his picture taken that day It doesn't rhyme because it doesn't have to :3 This video is full of win You are and always will be relevant to my interests as I am bi, atheist, and most importantly human. You have my heart good sir <3
Someone is going to point at this incident as proof that atheism is a religion, especially since the guy now trying to get Pastafarianism recognized as a religion in Austria.
For equal rights? Not at all. It's a victory for showing how ridiculous the special treatment of religion is worldwide.
Now all we need is for a nudist to claim that nudism is his religion, and sue for the right to walk around naked. With enough cases like these, religion will lose its special status, and we'll all finally be able to tax the churches.
@EdwardHowton "we'll all finally be able to tax the churches"
A quicker way for lawmakers to realize the absurdity of tax exemption for churches is this: a pasta making company claims that their facilities are spreading the message of pastafarianism and therefore need to be tax exempt.
The company can now even cite this case of the austrian guy to claim that pastafarianism is a real religion!
Honestly, I think this is awesome. I get sick of the government trying to distinguish what it will and won't accept as a "religion." Back in High School I was kind of superstitious, and wanted Friday the 13th off...but, apparently that didn't count as religious, so I couldn't get it...
reminds me of. "After being charged £20 for a £10 overdraft, 30-year-old Michael Howard of Leeds changed his name by deed poll to “Yorkshire Bank PLC Are Fascist Bastards”. The bank has now asked him to close his account, and Mr. Bastards has asked them to repay the 69p balance, by cheque, made out in his new name. (The Guardian)"
I don't think this advances anything. Symbolic gestures are the domain of the religious and sort of puts atheists in that camp. It might give people shockofgod and their likes more ammunition, although I do find it funny and I am not offended by it.
Proves a point to a 't'. If others can wear what they want because of their particular religion, then so can Pastafarians. It should have been a pirate hat. Must be a splinter group from the West coast.
It's funny as a knock against the stupidity so many religious people seem to possess, but it's rather disheartening to see there's a new religious exemption...
LOL. Your poor, poor kitty looks to be giving you the "what the hell are you doing to me, human slave!" expression as you try to put on the spaghetti strainer hat.
@BornWithoutReligion You should see the actual video of us trying to "knight him" with the strainer. He finally went out the window and hid on the sill until he was sure we were done. :D

this sounds more like a cheap shot to me. Personally it's still a win, as long as it's not harming or effecting anyone around him who cares?!

The pastafarians should have tax exemption status too .
darkdragonsoul99 7 months ago
I don't think this advances anything. Symbolic gestures are the domain of the religious and sort of puts atheists in that camp. It might give people shockofgod and their likes more ammunition, although I do find it funny and I am not offended by it.

I can't wait until people win the right to swear on whatever the pastafarian equivalent to the bible is in court

All of the above.

its not equal enough. he should be able to wear the pirate outfit as well.
420simpson 7 months ago
Proves a point to a 't'. If others can wear what they want because of their particular religion, then so can Pastafarians. It should have been a pirate hat. Must be a splinter group from the West coast.
saxmanchiro 7 months ago
This is the most ridiculous, offensive piece of mockery of religion I have seen and the person in question should be ashamed of themselves.
The official headgear of Pastafarianism is a pirate hat.

All people should be able to wear headgear at all times. Except when obscuring the face for photos.

@LegendaryAsshole If we ban the burka what will I do if I want to take up bank robbing? :(
TheTruePooka 7 months ago
@TheTruePooka Government photos, and in banks and stores, regardless of faith, religion, or ritual - Face is shown or you can go get blown.
LegendaryAsshole 7 months ago
It's funny as a knock against the stupidity so many religious people seem to possess, but it's rather disheartening to see there's a new religious exemption...
MyOldName 7 months ago
It's a little good thing. Sure Pastafarians could be doing something more important, but one small victory at a time!

No shit?
This solves everything! Call something you do that others hate, like being gay, your religion!

LOL. Your poor, poor kitty looks to be giving you the "what the hell are you doing to me, human slave!" expression as you try to put on the spaghetti strainer hat.

@BornWithoutReligion My father-in-law used to call me my cat's master. I laughed as long as the cat would let me.

@BornWithoutReligion You should see the actual video of us trying to "knight him" with the strainer. He finally went out the window and hid on the sill until he was sure we were done. :D
