I just bought 2 lab retrievers all chocolate a male and female at 11wks old. I can't wait to get them trained and take them with me camping and hunting.
wow! i want to buy this dog when we get a house, coz ryt now we are still living in apartment, and i've done research about this dog and they say it is a sport dogs and is better in wide open spaces, and i discovered that they are a good swimmers!!! i'm excited! i wanna own one of this! :D
I have a 6 month black lab rescue, he's pretty good aside from his enormous amounts of energy that annoys my Chihuahua at times and his mouthing/nipping. I'm having trouble keeping him from nipping and putting his mouth on me or my clothes. I'm not sure of the best way to keep him from biting and nipping me. Any suggestions?
I love your videos. Thanks for posting and keep'em coming. My family and I recently adopted a black female. She is now 16 weeks and being crated trained. She was extremely behaved until a few weeks ago when she started jumping on the kitchen table/counters. My wife & kids (son 7yrs and daughter 11yrs) and I correct her with a stern "NO" whenever she does this and then praise her with "good girl" and pets when she gets down but she only seems to be getting worse. Any advice. Thanks!! DW
@ codecrt321 at six weeks they are very capable of learning simple command: sit, down, stand, stay, shake. Don't overwork and try to punish if they don't understand because they are just puppies.
I love seeing all your insight into the dog's reactions. We are first time lab owners of a stray who just went through her first heat. She is an amazing dog, but we are training late. This video has been a big help.
@CottonwoodHuntClub This video has given me a lot to work towards! I have a 10 month old male black lab, do you have any tips on how to calm your dog before training sessions, my lab is very hyper and it is hard to get his attention at times. Also, we have been using treats, but I would rather not, how can I transition to just pets and praises?
@CottonwoodHuntClub thank you for the video but i want to ask some thing how do you make them poo in a place were you wan too like i dont like when my dog pees or poos on the floor i just need to teach my lab that
hey i have been train my lab for a while and she is retrieving dummies. so i decided to introduce her to live birds and its like she completely forgot all her training and tries to run off with it could you help me? im not sure what to do?
@cabelasportsmen try working with another experienced dog when introducing live birds, I always use another good dog to show the ropes, patience it will happen.
@CottonwoodHuntClub ok thanks got a guy i know who is now the president of some larador foundation or something he said he could help his name is al wilson i dont know if you've ever heard of him, but thanks again.
@memphismike1235 Back up your training to include check cord, toss retrieve within cord length, release dog to retrieve, as soon as he picks it up turn your back while holding cord, very positive recall as you walk AWAY. The dog will follow and indiscreetly turn and get delivery to hand.
i have only one problem with my female lab. its around 7 months she listens to all my commands but only when the gates open she goes out i am afraid that other dogs shouldnt bite it and when she runs out and when i go to bring her back she gets hyper and starts runnig away fast. plz respond me that how should i teach her not to run out when gates open
@chandnishiek1234 work on the sit and stay command near the gate, first with it closed and then with it open,. The dog is not to use the open mode as a trigger to go. Open and close gate repetitively as dog remains on sit. Require a sit and stay with every door opening including your house. This takes a few days to turn around old pattern of breaking when gate opens. Require a higher level of obedience through positive training.
@cabelasportsmen It is a personal choice to spay your femal, based on breeding plans, ect. If breeding is not in the picture, generally spaying the dog is recomended althought there are side affects that you must weigh out. A dog having a heat cycle every 6 months is no fun through out life time. Side affects include weight gain, incontinent issues, ect. Not every dog has these side affects. If it were me I would spay the dog, as I say there are always great breeders out there.
I´ve teached my Lab the basic comands but for example when I award her she does it easily but when I don´t award her either she bits me or she doesn´t do the comand. Can you help me?
PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!! My yellow lab wil not do any tricks wothout a treat and i really need her to start doing tricks without treats im only 10 and dunno what to do do u have any tips please comment back thnks!!! :) 0: ;)
@52waydene my recommendation is to ween your dog off treats for reward. At first do every other reward with treat. a couple of days later make it every two rewards, and so on. Dogs learn through and routine.
Hey! I have a 2 yrs old male black lab, and it's "trained"... He knows how to sit, walk, go down, wait, etc, etc, etc... But I have the BIGGEST PROBLEM OF ALL, when he sees another animal he gets crazy and starts pulling, barkind and bristling. I'm petite, I'm 1,56 cms and my weight is 51 kgs, when he do that I always fall or get another bruise. Can you help me? I tried to punish and correct him.... but it didn't work.
Question. I have a lab thats 5 years old. As a puppy he had minimal training, he learned to sit and go down. Now i can get him to sit and go down in the house, however outside on a leash he tries to walk you. He pulls whoever has him on the leash all over and is distracted it seems by everything( scents, small animals, other dogs, people) when he gets distracted he follows almost no commands. What do you suggest i try to make him behave better on a leash and in general?
Now that's a properly, calmly trained animal. Good to see someone not using 'treats' either. Praise from you as 'pack leader' is far better for their mental and physical wellbeing than any cookie. Nice vid!

I would like to know how is it to have a labrador in a apartment.I live in a 91m2 apartment. And i am thinking of buying one.How oftenly should i take them for a walk and how long? What do they eat and how much? How often should they have a bath? How long do they sleep a day?Are they hard to learn to use the potty?Do they chew furniture?Do they bark a lot?
i want to have a labrador but please can u tell me if its ok for a lab to live on an apartment??of course i will take him for walks and stuff!!!! :))))

@ba258ism I read some of your other comments about yor difficulties, I think a good local pro trainer could really help you out. Really important that behavoiral issues get turned around, break the pattern that is becoming the norm
@ba258ism if you use the ecollar right you should be able to get a perfect heel, but its all in the timing. Find a local trainer and within one session they should be able to teach you how to use the ecollar correctly.I trained my Rottie to heel perfectly forwards backwards even backwards in a figure 8, without an Ecollar, just vocal praise, at first some treats and a clicker, and eventually just a toy reward because she has a very high ball drive. now she will heel w/o anything. just be patient

Great clip, I am wondering can you help me train my Labrador not to eat non food items while on the walk ? She is 13 months old and this is a habit I find very difficult to get the better of. Thank you
yes of course, keep in mind the lab has two years doing her own training. You have to start a new consistent obedience routine, and exercise. Older dogs learn quick but they have to know you are serious and committed to training.
Ive got a problem. I have 2 full bred yellow boys they are 7 months old. I try to give discpline and instruction but i feel as though its to early because theyre so rambunxious and just crazy. Do you have any tips for me please please lol.
@dman3472 7 months is the perfect age to start a training program including obedience and retrieve. The number one rule from a trainer is don't bring tow puppies same age home! you will need to separate each on occasion for individual training to try to connect with each. Start your training session by calming your dog, out of sight from the other. Require extended lengths of on command with out breaking, calming and praise are your goal. If they are too much, send to Colorado!
hi mate i have trained my labrador called reggie to retrieve whilst shooting. But he fetches everytime with out my command how do i change this?? Thanks in advance Sam.
Mae is field trial stock, Daddy is American and Canadian National champion, Five Star General Patton. An athlete like non other. Mae has become one of the greatest Upland and waterfowl retrievers. I have trained labs for 40 years, and it is amazing in the past 15 years of the complete transformation of the breed into every shape size and color.
@ColoradoDogTrainer Hi Man! I asked because my little lady has the classic shape of a Labrador Retreiver and I never saw a lab like yours! :) I noticed some differences between mine and your lab so I was curious.. Here in Italy there are many breeders which I know, each of which with their particular "line" of breeding.. Some breeders grow labs with very strong physique, others grow labs with particular attitudes but i never saw labs with that long tail! Very curious! :) Your dog it's amazing!
I find the dogs are actually distracted and focused on food, rather than task on hand. Some breeds food will help, but the labs are very trainable without the food baiting.
@antidescent Umm Labradors like to please their master. Its a trait of their characteristics. So they will do it for the praise rather than just the food.
Hi, you have a nice lab, i have one myself, but I dont like to see that you are using this line...I can see that your girl is scared of being choked again, which leads her to comply with the commands. Then again, I can see on her tail that she has fun... but I use no choking line to train my Roxy, instead loads of patience....anyway good job...thanks
The best training and examples I have seen. Thanks for posting. i have 2 male Black labs that are one year old and I am starting to train them. Your are great trainer, Ted.
Awesome demonstration and very helpful. I adopted a labrador retriever yesterday and bring her home in three days, I bought books, and looked at many videos in training them. It seems that different people have different ways of teaching but one thing that i have learned from all of it is that you must praise them for everything they do and be very patiant with them. Thank you
this is exactly how i want my lab trained... people who train with treats are doing it wrong especially with black labs

Thank you
