The sandwich was brought over by Italian immigrants to Chicago and is a unique, delicious recipe. Saying that it's blasphemy without even trying (probably) it is an interesting form of manners.

To be completely honest.... Their are plenty better places to get a beef sandwich in the Chicagoland area. Al's beefs are very little and are close to $10 with cheese and peppers. I can go to a deli down the street and get a beef that's 2-3 bigger for half the price.

@Syre126 It also has to do with the signature meats, flavouring of the meats, the sauces, the bread. It's not just the fact of where you can get cheap meat. And Al's is a mix of a diner/deli. Not just a Deli. BIG difference. You pay have the price and get subway quality, I'll pay $10 which is basically subway price but get so much more yumminess, and careful quality, and I can see what they do to the meat.
