I would like to know why such a small cage was used and age doesn't matter wen it is for a hamster. Also the toys that were toxic like a drumstick and other soft plastics that are not made for birds should be avoided. I know you meant well but please do more research if there is a next time. These animals have the mental capacity of a 2 year old so imagine what that is like. 25 years of experience here and a 33 year old Tres Maria is sitting next to his 22 year old Medium Sulfer Crested sis.
@jonny7748 'Hamstercage' was a 3 1/2 foot rabbit cage, reason it was used was because she was severely disabled + totally at risk in normal parrot cage. What drumstick? You meanthe natural wood dolly peg, no varnish, colorants or anything on it? The coloured pegs were used as they were not brittle, but tough enough to resist her beak,(Avian vet approved) Cinders was 75/76, not 33. Mental capacity can equal a 4 year old BTW. Comments respected, but pls ask before accusing. And your vids?
@AnnieBirdy I see a ball with a bell in it, clothes pins, a shoe, then @3:22 that looks like a drum stick, sorry it it wasn't. Did this bird have nesting foot? The Medium Sulfur I mentioned has one, which is why I rescued her. I understand the rabbit cage to a degree but I will wait to see what you say about the disability. Sorry, they do not reach the capacity of a 4 year old. I will put up a video just for you at some point, including a 25 year old Indian Ring neck dove.
@jonny7748 hello again :) No, she didn't have nesting foot, it was an old badly healed break in her lower leg which had set twisted, I know deffinately the injury was over 25yrs old, but 30, 50, 60yrs old, I dont know. I see where yor coming from re ball/bell, however, Cinders jaw and bite were relatively weak, sometimes she even struggled with her occasional monkey nut treat. Beak was surprising sharp though, easily piercd skin. However, because of the size of it(beak) *continuing>>>
@jonny7748 I never let her play with any smaller toy, and yes, i did scoop her up and take her with me if i went to the toilet, or door, or kitchen. Often 'thankd' with a growl+nip! Cind hadn't played with toys for many many years, and at first, the bigger toys for her size terrified her, but to me it seemed her world was desperately lacking in stimulation, or the basic joys of curiosity+play. I found smaller items engaged her interest, didnt scare her, and (continued>>>>
@jonny7748 play entered her life again. I DO see your point,I realy do. CAGE: Cinders fell frequently, she could even trip and fall on the floor. Id tried heavil padding the cage she came with, but still, when she fell, the way she froze and the shock in her eyes was vivid.Hutch was a trial idea at first, and when she fell in her hutch, that look never appeared when she realised there was no great drop. She'd just hobble straight back to where she wanted to be, unhurt, unafraid.>>>
@jonny7748 Most of the time, it was on the floor, so she could climb in and out as she pleased, which she did. it was really only ever up on the table at bedtime, if I was out, or if I was to busy to watch her or carry her round. She couldn't fly at all, not even flutter enough to slow down a tumble. I appreciate you coming back, and I hope my reasons for my choices re Cinders make more sense now. Over long beak she came with, was trimd by avian vet.Hope my choices make sense now J :)
@jonny7748 PLEASE NOTE, in reply part two, I ment to say ''I never let her play with a small toy UNSUPERVISED. Sorry, I ment to say never *unsupervised!*
@AnnieBirdy Glad I came back. Actually I think you went further then most with what you received and should share that all with more people. Don't feel bad about being nipped. When she bird was born, they were not hand feeding as a norm to say the least. My dbbl yllw bites me once in a while as he is giving "kisses" and over the years my hands have become numb to it unless he draws blood lol. She was probably hurting so much you really shouldn't be offended at all. Ty 4 sharing!
@jonny7748 Thanks :-) She never really bit me,just a warning nip.Anyone else tried to touch her,she ment BUSINESS when she lunged! Towards her final days she was on regular metacam,I knew in my heart she wasnt going to be with me much longer,so I didn't worry about long term affects of Met, I just wanted her pain free. When her time came, she passed quietly,in her favourite place, snuggled on my chest with her face pressed into my neck. I loved her so much, and got it back 1000 fold+++
@AnnieBirdy She had a good end to her trail. A boxer came into my life who was not wanted, had a cancerous tumor and completely neglected. Even his teeth were over grown with infected gums and needed surgery many times. So may horrible things this pup went through, but he was 7 1/2 when I brought him home and he lived to be over 13. He fought cancer many times until the end when it spread from a mummified testicle that was not removed. He was in my arms went he went, not so well :-(.
I was going to comment that it seemed strange to put her in a one level cage, then I realized at 75 she would probably be having the same trouble getting around as my grandma. Wise move I think, and wiser than my grandma, who moved from a two level house to a three when she started to get old. *face palm*
@DrGamble28 yes indeed, some time between the latter end of 1931 and the early part of 1932. And, she lived through a world war aswell, with a large biscuit tin with holes in the lid as her personal air-raid shelter to help protect her from the many air strikes of the time!
You put that bird in that cage! That think is small I have a amazon and she is bigger than that and we got her a big cage because we love her and don't wanna keep her in a box...
@Kittycat123455 So you think a 75 year old disabled bird who is unable to perch and has trouble balancing should be in a huge cage where she could fall and break her legs or wings? It was much better for Cinders to have a thickly padded safety zone where she simply ate and slept without risk of a terrible fall, and the freedom to wander round the house at will the rest of the time.I hear what you say, but a large cage could, and almost did, prove fatal for Cinders. She was 75!!
@toptop357 No, Cinders passed away at the grand age of 76 years. Her avian specialist vet said she was by far the oldest parrot he had ever had the pleasure of treating.
@SarahSnape Most parrots, if fed right, kept in a clean environment and given plenty of attention and love, can rival or even exceed the lifespan of a dog or cat. One cockatoo managed to live for 120 years. Generally, if you buy a medium size parrot or larger that isn't already old, you're going to want to think about who is going to take care of it when you can't.
That is SO CUTE!<3 My dad has a 17 year old Amazon named Buddy and he is so cute and he LOVES to play! Cinders is adorable and he must be very happy with you. You are an amazing person and I LOVE your videos!!! God Bless Both Of You!!! <3
I have a 50 year old Blue Front Amazon named "Pedro". I was online searching for articles on special care of older parrots. This video made me cry knowing I will probably have Pedro for many more years. Thank you so very much for sharing Cinders with us. From one parrot lover to another.
Parrots become as much a part of the family as a person. They are absolutely my favorite pets and the smartest creatures I know. In 2003 I lost a most precious parrot that was like my kid and I miss terribly every day. Recently I lost my parents who owned a double yellow head that I inherited and the house is full of love once again. What a character and my new baby.
watching that got me all teary here sitting looking at my 9 yr old amazon JR just wondering if anything should happen to me I pray there will be someone like you to take care of him ur awesome!
I hope that youre doing okay AnnieBirdy. Im a bird lover and i have one. He's a Senagal (i hope thats how you spell it!) and his name is Gator. I feel bad that Cinders passed on. If it were in my powers i would make sure that Cinders lived on. Hope you do okay, zack8789
Hi Zack, for some reason I have only just seen this comment, thankyou so much for your kind words. I adored Cinders, and never ceased to be enchanted by the wisdom and knowledge in her beautiful old face. I hope you and gator are both well and enjoying a great life together! Annie
That's your daughter singing? Wow, beautiful voice, beautiful video of a beautiful bird! I'm sorry about your loss of this wonderful companion, it must have been difficult.
Hi Skittles, thankyou for your lovely comment. Am curious how you know its my daughter singing tho, but yes, it certainly is! Losing Cinders wasw indeed very difficult, we had an extraordinary close bond, but I know now that she is free of any pain, her limbs are straight and perfect again, and her feathers are now in their original former glory.
Okay, I just spent last night and part of this morning looking through your YouTube videos plus looking through your personal site. I can't, for the life of me, find where I found out it was your daughter singing, lol. I know I had to have read it somewhere when I was first looking/watching your videos.
You have some great stories of rescue, you're a very loving and special person to do what you've done.
Is it true you can't work with the birds anymore? I'm so sorry if that's still the case!
Wow, 75. She lasted longer than any of my Grandparents. I wish she could tell us what she has seen and what she knows. The cage looks comfy, I think I can see arthritis in her left foot? Does she fly? Can she still perch? Looks like there is still alot of attitude in those little eyes!
Hi VS! Sadly dear Cinders is no longer with us, she passed away in my arms at the vets at the grand age of 76yrs. Cinders leg had been very badly broken decades ago,and of course back then there was not the wonderful avian veterinary treatment that there is today,so her leg healed in a twisted, deformed way.yes,it did indeed lead to severe arthritis, but whenever it troubled her she was given pain meds. She could perch, but it was not easy and she often fell. She was FULL of attitude!
That is so sad! 76 years of knowledge gone! We need more bird doctors in the world. I wanted to be an ornithologist, but due to allergies I have no chance of becoming an animal dr. I hope Cinders went skyward to join her family and friends.
Oh my goodness, I have tears in my eyes. I've never seen such an elderly parrot. Look at those poor little old feet and sparse feathers. What a wonderful person you are, and what a happy parrot Cinders is.
Thankyou 'C' xxx it was simply the beautiful birds who made any of these viseos possible. The singer in the backing theme for this vid is my own lovely daughter melanie xxx
Awwww...so kind of you to give this bird much needed comforts in her golden years. You are a good soul.
