that's a good question, I haven't really thought about it but now that I do, i think it might have been the same as now. I think it depends on the performer and their level of dedication, there were probably some amazing dancers and other that weren't. what i do know is that as time passes traditional belly dance keeps evolving. they certainly dint's dance like this back then.
there's also a big difference in dance, particularly middle-eastern dance of any kind, as a performing art versus a folkloric dance that people would've danced at weddings/events and the like.
