I heard that Phyllis Hyman was a fan of Minnie's voice even though she didnt particularly like the soprano voice...I love her voice. it's so beautiful!
I LOVE hearing MINNIE sing this song....She sings it from the heart......She knew what was before her and was so brave, courageous and passionate about living her life to the fullest...Thanks Minnie !!!!!
This was taped in 1979 the same year she passed. If you notice she cannot move her right arm. According to her (Unsung) story on TVOne it was said that the tumor had spread to her arm causing her pain. Minnie is the offical vocal songbird. No one can ever sound like her. I've been loving her music since 1974.
Minnie-the original songbird! I will always love her. "Alone in Brewster Bay" and "Don't Let Anyone Bring You Down" help me survive during some turbulent times. Her voice and songs always gave me hope.
mariah's whistle range is forced while minnies came natural..next time u see mariah do it watch how she flail her arms and hand around gettin it out..but she did pay dues.
Old schoolers, I hate to sound argumentive, but this WAS in fact lip-synched. But don't take that as being disrespectful. I LOVE Minnie Ripperton, and that is in no way to knock her at all. Some performances were lip-synched though, and there was probably a good reason for it. The reason is because the studio recording and this one can't sound EXACTLY the same and it be live. Live will ALWAYS sound a bit different.
Again, not a knock on her. A LOVELY woman with a BEAUTIFUL VOICE.
I actually thought I was the only one that thought that. No, actually she's talking about losing a past love. (I just found that out a few minutes ago). "I see you standing there, such a happy happy pair..." and other lines like that. But a lot of other lines sound very much like she's singing about the dying of cancer. You're very right about that.
There is a video she did of this song here on youtube as well. Have you seen it yet?
Absolutely not, you're right about that. I listen to mostly songs from this time period now. Today's is just not the same at all. So much is just missing.
This is footage that Soul Train used for her final tribute. The tribute was firsted aired in February of 1980. She probably did this the first part of 1979. I am confused because I read where she was bedridden in June of 1979. But I also read where she performed in July of 1979.
MMEMMORRY--I had that same question about the dates, but I think what I saw said her performance "aired" in July '79, so I am assuming that she "taped" it before June.
Yes, this was. It's not a knock on the singers themselves, but sometimes they did lip-synch during certain performances for whatever reason.
Old schoolers don't like hearing people say that, but again, it's not a knock on them. There was probably a good reason for doing so. But the way you can tell is to listen to the studio recording (tape, CD, etc) and if the live performance sounds EXACTLY like in the studio, it's lip-synched. The live performance will ALWAYS sound a little different.
Dont quite know the exact date, but it was definitely the year she died(1979)during promotions of her final album...The way I can tell is because during her final days she was unable to move her right arm which was at this point paralyzed...This album was released on May 9th 1979 and she died 2 months after its release!
I LOVE HOW SHE FEELS THE MUSIC AND PERFORMS ACCORDINGLY

Why didnt she move her arm?! :O
aliciasweatt 6 months ago
@aliciasweatt because the cancer had by this time advanced into her lymph nodes, which rendered her arm immovable.

As a matter of fact on this video her arm was almost completely paralyzed, and that is why it's in a fixed position.

I heard that this in this song she was talking about her dying of cancer, is this true? I think that it is because she's singing
"save me" in the lyrics.
