3:48 I will never forget how the audience exploded into cheers and applause when Clark Kent pulled his shirt open to reveal the "S" for the very first time.
A little trivia for ya.The voice of "ground control" talking to the chopper pilot is one other than Chris Reeve. He was already a pilot himself so he was familiar with the radio lingo. So they haaaad im do the voice -over."We have Miss Lane here for a quick ride to Metropolis Airport to meet Air Force One".
So coooool! These special effects wouldn't even look too out of place next to more modern movies. Plus, the phone box bit is so clever. It makes me giggle.
Oh, and I've noticed a bit of dislike toward Smallville in the comments here. I'd just like to say that I think Smallville is the bomb. ;)
This has to be, the most perfectly made action movie of all time...some people may disagree, and they're well within their right to do so, but, you just can't go wrong with oldschool...the dynamic simplicity of the film, is what will continue to create, cheers, tears, and goosebumps, for generations to come...
The message that this movie portrays, is that, we all can be, "Superheroes" in our own personal lives...Supermen, Superwomen, Superchildren, Superpeople...and we can commit acts of heroism, far greater, in the real world, than that portrayed in any fictional comic book...
so freaking epic when he grabs the helicopter. he's just looking at it smiling like "pfft". and the special effects are outstanding to have been done in 1978
Never going to be another Superman like Chris Reeves. Just like there will never be another Lone Ranger like Clayton Moore. No need to try. Just the way it is.
@logik316 From what I understand it was for the same reason they chose Christopher Reeve to play Clark Kent/Superman. She impressed the ever loving hell out of the casting director panel. Hell if I were a young man in 1978, I'd have been attracted to her.
One of the best moments in Superhero movie history. Stiil gets your attention and sets the start of superhero movies to come but I dont think those captured what this movie did in my opinion.
The scene where he runs towards the camera and reveals the S is still one of, if not THE greatest cinematic moments in movie history. Still get chills in the lead up to that part.
First class acting performances by christopher reeve, margot kidder, and gene hackman just totally nailed lex luthor, are just one of themany things that makes this movie a timeless classic.
My mum died in 2006. We both watched SUPERMAN together when we bought a new widescreen TV. I remember her being glued to the screen and on the edge of her seat during this particular scene. We both had a wonderful time watching this film and I remember her commenting that it was 'Like being in the Cinema'.
I'm alone now but as I watch this scene I remember how much my Mum loved this film and am thankful we shared so many wonderful times together.
@biofire Thanku for your kind comment. My Mum was nearly seventy years old when we watched this magnificent film together and it was lovely to see the wonderment in her face - she really was totally emersed in the film from the moment Marlon Brando first spoke. It was as if, for a brief moment, she forgot all her aches, pains and troubles and became a child again caught up in the magic of SUPERMAN. The power of this film really did touch people of all ages and will always be special to me.
@StreathamG Be at peace my friend, cos something tells me that your mother's first act on getting into the big palace in the sky was to sit and chat with Christopher Reeve.
I believe a man can fly, and right they've both flown higher than any man.
I have to agree, one of the best movie moments of all time. I get goose bumps when I see this because I remember seeing this for the first time as a child. It blew my mind! Awesome! God bless Christopher Reeve. RIP
CHRISTOPHER REEVE'S PORTRAYAL IS THE ONLY ONE WHICH WILL MAKE YOU BELIEVE THAT PEOPLE CAN REALLY FLY! NO ONE BUT NO ONE CAN EVER COME CLOSE TO HIM AS SUPERMAN!
Yes, Superman Returns is a gross abomination of movie making and a perverted mess trying to attach itself like a diseased parasite to a pure organism that was the original Superman movie.
Sounds like bad news to me. Nolan's Superman will probably have some pretentious megalomaniac villain who sounds like the Joker (itself far from the comicbook Joker, who is a cruel prankster) and some glued-on plot twist in the end to throw the audience a bone and keep them wondering later if there's some "deeper meaning" to it.
Nolan did get Batman Begins right. Gotham City is dark, dirty and corrupt. In TDK it's suddenly a nice, sunny and clean Chicago.
Nolan will be busy shooting the 3rd Batman movie, so he won't have time for a Superman re-boot at the same time. He will have to choose, and chances are he'll devote all his time for his 3rd and final Batman movie. Wisely enough he has declined doing another one.
Anyway since Nolan says he is all about "reality" (his 2dimensional view of it), you can forget all about him making a realistic movie about a man that can fly and comes from the planet Krypton.
I can relate to the guy who said he gets goosebumps. There are few movie moments that do that to me, and this is one of them. I also agree the pimp scene is a break from it, which I think should have been cut out.
@old45marine "It's a very old fiim.but when he gets Lois and then the Chopper I smile :)

A movie like The Matrix is also an old film, what's your point???
If it's a good film, then age doesn't matter, this movie, Superman, was ahead of it's time and with some great casting, it's still better than movies released today.
Well from a fan of this classic chris reeve is the only superman who will shine in this part.........when i went to go see superman returns hearing that john williams theme song just made the movie all the more worth watching....i do admit that the story was way to much and a bit off the wall but over all Brian Singer made that movie being a huge fan of the original as well and not wanting to stray off the storyline and with alot of respect to it like using old scenes with marlon brando
I had never read a comic book before I saw this film at the age of ten (never read one afterwards for that matter) and this sequence and the only superhero related media I had seen was the old Spider-Man cartoons. This just blew me away.
She'd only be sliced into 3 pieces if he instantly stopped her in mid air or if he applied more than enough force to stop her fall. If you paid attention to when he caught her, you'll see that he negated the impact of catching her by falling with her at first, slowing to a stop, and then flying upward again.
Watch the background when he catches her, the building is going up, it slows, it stops, then it goes down again as he flies her up to the roof. Same thing happens with the helicopter.
yeah the stupid asses on Big Band Theory messed that up and said she would of been killed, but the writers didn't notice he was flying down when he caught her.
@Anonylido345 excellent assessment, what separates this masterpiece of film making from many comic book interpretations today, and i include superman2 bar space scene, is the artistic approach - the most unrealistic and unbelievable character became real and believable! What you have touched on here is the very mechanics of realism employed throughout the picture, for the power of logic in this scene gave rise to many conspiracies and reinforced the notion that the moon landings were a hoax
I'll never forget the thrill I experienced when he grabbed that helicopter and stopped it with the ease of a person stopping someone from falling backward in a chair. That and the way that the music surged at that moment helps make this one of the greatest scenes in movie history. Please, everyone, why can't we keep the comments about the vidoes and not about who did what in politics?
Granted, it was his first appearance. But the writers probably asked, 'How would Superman be received, if he were first introduced to the world in modern-1978-life?'
Reeve will always be the first, best Superman. While I thought Routh did an ok job. There was too much change in his costume. The Reds were too dark. The shorts and belt were cut too short. It should of been around his waist, and not below the hips. Superman needs too be bright, and not dark like Batman. Plus I think Returns was just plain boring. It needed too have more action. And a better story, and not so much of a retrospect too Superman II
I don't know of any other composer in movie history that can control people's emotions quite like John Williams. All of his compositions are gripping.
Christopher Reeve outlived this role, guess there can never be another Superman movie made simply because of the fact that Christopher Reeve (read the only Superman) is no longer amongst us. Bless his soul of course and thanks to all to all those who made the legend called Superman in the big screen. Miss you Mr Reeve, Rest in peace - Vijay
I love this part of the movie so much. I just watched it again and it actually brings a tear to my eye. This movie shows what is great about our country. The music and pace is beyond perfect and when the pimp yells I laugh every time.
If he came out of the building, looked up, saw her hanging for her life and then, hailed a taxi and headed home - they could call the film something like, "superbastard"
@SulliMike241 Yes indeed, THAT was and ALWAYS will be Margot Kidder's SIGNATURE LINE -- in my opinion, THE funniest line of the whole picture. A close second is the following scene when a burglar tries to climb up and break into a highrise building, only to be confronted by Reeve who says, "Hi there. Something wrong with the elevator?" :-) LMAO!
Does anyone know how long into the film this scene is? and yeh, i agree that Superman Returns was a disappointment, although i think Brandon Routh was a decent choice as Superman and wouldnt mind if he was him again in another film
This scene is 1 hour 7 minutes into the movie and is the very first movie action scene of Superman. Hence the reason Lois doesn't know who he is, "who are you"
Keep in mind that this was the very first Superman movie and the first half of it was taken up by the baby Superman's escape from the destruction of Krypton then growing up on Earth with the Kents in Smallville then coming to learn who he is and where he came from before moving to Metropolis and being hired by the Daily Planet.
@FilmFantastic0, Hey there. Maybe you can explain something to me...when the destruction of Krypton was lurking upon it's inhabitants, why wouldn't the counsel believe Jor-el's theory of an imminent destruction? Then that chick comes out and says, "...the planet is merely shifting its orbit." I'm like, "WTH?" They just wrote off Supes' pop as a 'crackpot'! A little help pls?
@sploosh100 I agree! Before he died Christopher Reeve gave Brandon Routh his seal of approval. So I hope Warner Brothers pays attention to that before making any more Superman films.
yeah i would rather see a human Superman flying than an animated one... And the music score in this one is fantastic.. I was waiting for this music score in Superman Returns but i was very disappointed... Margot Kidder is also the best Lois Lane! And the lines in this movie are very funny and very witty... The lines in Superman Returns are sooo boring!
First movie I ever saw in the theatres and it still gets to me today. A great scene, great performance, great actor, and great hero- it doesn't get any better.
Amazing to think this scene was done before the age of CGI, created by the elements of a sound stage, location shots, front projection and wire work. The scene completed by the magical sounds of John Williams and the heart and soul of a production who really made this the best scene and Superhero movie ever made. Not forgetting the ultimate presence of Reeve who brought the character out of the comic book.
I so would love to watch this film and especially this scene in a big theatre. I imagine even today if you just showed this one scene in a cinema, the audience would still get chills down their spine. :D I know I would and I'm only 24. My favourite movie of all time.
me too, this is my favorite scene in the movie especially when he catche's the helicopter & the superman tune start's to play i alway's get a shiver :)lol
Best Superman scene ever. Poor Christopher Reeves. He was a great Superman and its ironic he fell prey to the Superman curse that has plagued superman movie actors for years. Even Margot Kidder ( lois lane ) fell prey.. As did Richard Pryor and many more..
No, you didn't give the impression she was dead. But for some reason I thought that. Then I got to thinking maybe it was because I last saw her on Smallville and I remember watching that episode thinking that she didn't look too healthy.
I just spotted something today. I was watching Superman v's Nuclear man and I noticed the crowd scene at 2:08 is the same crowd scene they used in this Helicopter rescue scene at 4:56. The cop caught my attention . I knew I saw him somewhere before..
Dude that video is just an edited vid that has clips from Superman returns (2006) and also Superman the movie (1978) The reason that you saw that scene is because it really was from Superman the movie and it has only been edited into this clip by whoever has created this video, amateur....
One of the greatest movie moments of all time. Introduction of Superman, I still get goosebumps when he runs across the street and rips his shirt as the theme cranks up. The pimp scene is a break from a teary emotion. Classic
I still love this movie. Christopher Reeve did a fantastic job of potraying both Superman and Clarke Kent. The helicopter sequence was amazing for its time. Richard Donner did a fantastic job on this film. Thanks for putting it on here.
To this day I am amazed that millions was spent on an expensive superhero movie- that was targeted for adults instead of kids. Great movie Donner and company!
If I was that pimp and some guy started flying like that, I'd pee my pants. Haha!

That was just weird to say.

SulliMike241 2 years ago 3
@SulliMike241 Yes indeed, THAT was and ALWAYS will be Margot Kidder's SIGNATURE LINE -- in my opinion, THE funniest line of the whole picture. A close second is the following scene when a burglar tries to climb up and break into a highrise building, only to be confronted by Reeve who says, "Hi there. Something wrong with the elevator?" :-) LMAO!

Does anyone know how long into the film this scene is? and yeh, i agree that Superman Returns was a disappointment, although i think Brandon Routh was a decent choice as Superman and wouldnt mind if he was him again in another film
sploosh100 2 years ago 3
This scene is 1 hour 7 minutes into the movie and is the very first movie action scene of Superman. Hence the reason Lois doesn't know who he is, "who are you"
Keep in mind that this was the very first Superman movie and the first half of it was taken up by the baby Superman's escape from the destruction of Krypton then growing up on Earth with the Kents in Smallville then coming to learn who he is and where he came from before moving to Metropolis and being hired by the Daily Planet.

@FilmFantastic0
Yup this was the first close to 3 hour movie i believe. It's the Origin and the Story in one... Really a classic.
jrag1000 1 year ago
@FilmFantastic0 I'd forgotten that; just how long into the movie before we get to see Superman himself. What a good movie....
cochranexyz 1 year ago
@FilmFantastic0, Hey there. Maybe you can explain something to me...when the destruction of Krypton was lurking upon it's inhabitants, why wouldn't the counsel believe Jor-el's theory of an imminent destruction? Then that chick comes out and says, "...the planet is merely shifting its orbit." I'm like, "WTH?" They just wrote off Supes' pop as a 'crackpot'! A little help pls?
SidJustice1 1 year ago
@SidJustice1
Most agree, they are a bit of crackpots.
Johnlindsey289 1 year ago
@sploosh100 I agree! Before he died Christopher Reeve gave Brandon Routh his seal of approval. So I hope Warner Brothers pays attention to that before making any more Superman films.
Tito1701 1 year ago
@Tito1701 I agree - it should be Brandon Routh.

yeah i would rather see a human Superman flying than an animated one... And the music score in this one is fantastic.. I was waiting for this music score in Superman Returns but i was very disappointed... Margot Kidder is also the best Lois Lane! And the lines in this movie are very funny and very witty... The lines in Superman Returns are sooo boring!

Best Superman scene ever. Poor Christopher Reeves. He was a great Superman and its ironic he fell prey to the Superman curse that has plagued superman movie actors for years. Even Margot Kidder ( lois lane ) fell prey.. As did Richard Pryor and many more..
STHFGDBY 2 years ago 2
@STHFGDBY Why, what happened to Margot Kidder?
TheCoastalPirate 2 years ago
@STHFGDBY Never mind my last question. I looked it up on Wikipedia. Sad. I never knew that about her.
TheCoastalPirate 2 years ago
No probs, I probably gave the impression that she was dead which of course she's not. She has wrote a book about the subject..
STHFGDBY 2 years ago
No, you didn't give the impression she was dead. But for some reason I thought that. Then I got to thinking maybe it was because I last saw her on Smallville and I remember watching that episode thinking that she didn't look too healthy.
TheCoastalPirate 2 years ago
I just spotted something today. I was watching Superman v's Nuclear man and I noticed the crowd scene at 2:08 is the same crowd scene they used in this Helicopter rescue scene at 4:56. The cop caught my attention . I knew I saw him somewhere before..

Which nuclear man scene do you refer to? Got a link to it, cant say I have ever noticed that??

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Am I the only one who wants to strangle that momentum-killing, scene-ruining pimp at 3:54??? Seriously, Donner, what were you thinking?
dascottjr 2 years ago
Are you kidding? It's a short quick funny insert that does not distract from the scene in my opinon.
