Good story, Joy. (Reading your comments now!) I too had saw the Michael Jackson shuttle entrance at Wembley with his History tour, but now I can go to China too to witness a launch!:)
Good story, Joy. (Reading your comments now!) I too had saw the Michael Jackson shuttle entrance at Wembley with his History tour, but now I can go to China too to witness a launch!:)
I've been to Bagotteville airport (Quebec) as a kid and seeing F-101 Voodos, then later F-18's... A can only imagine to see/feel the space shuttle go off.
I'm a bit jealous, Joy. I believe you when you say that pictures don't do it justice.
Thanks Red. Pictures really don't do it justice. I wish and all my friends could experience just one if you could but sadly the shuttle program will soon end
You're very welcome. Yep the windows were way up near the roof inside, I didn't notice them for at least an hour into the trip. Oh they also handed out these earplugs because it was so noisey in there as we were flying. What a trip. lol
Yeah, I stayed in Panama, for a few days, en route to Ecuador. Glad I went, for perspective, but I do not have fond memories of my time there. Drug lords + poverty + bullets = no fun. =(
Sometimes you could see the jet fly overhead when you were riding down the freeway. It was an interesting experience. No shaking of the ground, though. lol
I'll bet it was interesting. I forgot to mention that not only was my whole body feeling the vibrations but also I looked on the ground and pebbles were jumping up and down violently. Boy what an experience
Great vlog joy! A coworker of mine is a huge fan of space research. The one time he was able to travel to see the shuttle launch, the had to post-pone due to weather. I'm going to be in FL in Feb with family, i wonder if there will be a launch then.
P.S. Is it sad that I'm thinking of the movie "Contact" as I write this? :)
OK I loved that movie. It got horrible reviews but I loved it. If there is a launch in Feb. try to see one. There are only a few launches left and then the Shuttle program is over.
They have a new ride at the cape now the launch experience you get to feel what it is like to be in the shuttle. They used a panel of 30 astronaut's to make sure it feels like the real thing
i've been in a C130, and i've rode in the cockpit on one- the AC130, is the same plane with guns, and in Nam the troops called it Puff the Magic Dragon. great story! peace
Interesting story, Joy. They test the shuttle engines near here and you can hear AND feel it when they do. One criticism, Joy. Many women DO know what a C-130 looks like. Stereotyping is not a good thing.
Listen to what you say at 1:33. "For all the women out there I'm going to explain...." etc. My point is, please don't assume that "all those women out there" don't know what a C-130 is. That is a stereotypical statement. Interesting story anyway but please be careful of making assumptions about what one group or another does or doesn't know.
You are the second person to point this out to me. Geez, in my experience I didn't know if women knew what it looked like inside. Sorry if I offended you.
Nice Story Joy. Shuttle launches have always been a fav of mine. Never seen one in person thought, but I did write a basic program back in the 80's on a commodore 64 Computer of a shuttle launch. It Was Cool.
Awesome video Fringe! By the way you described it, I felt like I was there. Oh, did you see Lewismadmax's video today? He could see the shuttle right from his backyard. It was awesome. The C-130 sounds like an incredible experience. I guess being registered as an RN, I don't have that embarrassment. I could just pull off my pants and squat anywhere, not that I am not lady like. I do prefer a bathroom and privacy. 5 stars!
what a great story!!!! i guess if i had to go bad enough, i could have gone on that drum can, too, lol (i can only imagine the sight that was!) your description of the takeoff was very vivid, i could almost feel the engine thrusts!
I should have taken a photo of the inside of it. But we didn't have digital back then.
That's what got to me, the beauty of the Shuttle in person was awesome, but to feel it in my body made me feel I was on that thing. It was almost spiritual.
Love your story. The shaking would be scary. When I lived in Hawaii, a trio of B-2's flew over our apartment and the whole building shook like there was an earthquake. The power of the shuttle, though, would be immensely more powerful. Totally unfair to women to have long lines in bathrooms. Around here, they shove the guys aside and take over their bathroom. LOL.
That bathroom story was so funny. When I got out and saw that line it was like they said to themselves, thankgod she hads the nerve to do it. Now it's my turn lol
I remember where I was exactly when both shuttles went down though they were years apart, having grown up in Florida.
The first time we heard the sonic boom, went out of the classroom, saw the odd shaped con-trail and cheered and then got the news a few minutes later.
The second time I heard as I was pulling into Gainesville to do a show, which afterward just seemed just too surreal to play.
I don't know why I wanted to share that, but you made me think.
I guess because I already saw that flight with Sally Ride I could tell instantly that it blew up. I cried for days. That was the first teacher in flight. It was surreal. Please make a vid about it. Those are things we all remember where we were when it happened. Do a vid
That WAS cool was it not? I remember the signs Ride, Sally Ride! How cool you got to see it in person! My cousin had a chance to see a lift off and she described it the same way. The shuttle is set to end soon, most of us will not get to see a lift off.
Awesome story Joy. I've missed ya. But i'm back ^.^ What an honor to have been that close. I'd love to have that experience

I've heard about the ground shaking but from the look on your face, this is something that has to be experienced to be understood.
And, yep, TV is about as 'flat' as a pancake if ya ask me - moreso than Florida.
