Wayne's biggest smile ever seen on youtube at 5:33-5:34. He's like...Silvio isn't great tonight, he is unbelievable! Wow, I think we have another great lead trumpeter who has a fat sound in all registers! Bravo Mr. Barbara!!!

LAST COMMENT: When Wayne turned around to watch Silvio go back to his Lead Trumpet Chair, I can promise you he was thinking only one thing: HOLY SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!
What? People are criticizing Silvio about style, phrasing, licks? that's crazy! Wayne got taken to the cleaners that night and was outclassed and out played by Silvio! Every idea you hear from a player these days has its origin from a long time ago...in other words...its already been done! Trumpet is a physical game and people who are without upper register ( try 95% of all pros ) judge and criticize players with fabulous range!
Don't get me wrong...I would sell my soul to play like him...but sometimes I get really bored in the second half of Wayne's solos with the Big Phat Band because it's just really high stuff. It blows my mind the first few listens, but in the long run I think that Gordon should give him longer solos so he can rock the lower register longer, cuz his ideas are better there. But hearing him next to Mr. I-couldn't-play-a-sweet-lick-to-save-my-life makes him seem like an improvisational god
@tpt1111 ...no disrespect to Wayne, but he uses the same licks all the time in his improve, or at least a variation on the same licks. So i wouldn't call his improve in another league.
@jazzcrazy727875299 I can agree. I heard Wayne live and I was kind of disappointed by the consistent use of the same licks throughout. He even plays the same things on his recordings. So yes, live and in recordings he plays the same things. I thought Silvio was better even though he needed to calm down some but that's just me. Maybe he just got excited to play with somebody he admires a lot and got carried away :P
@selector111 Its not about "over a double C" at all, Its about time and phrasing within solos, Wayne has structure to his solos, creates a melody and a rhythm that goes well with it. No point in having a scream out without the basics. That's like having the icing on the cake with no cake in the first place!
no i agree with you. Two trumpet players that epitomize soloing in a useable range are Wynton Marsalis for his ideas and Chris Botti for his sexy tone and melodies.
Er...Wayne sounds much, much better. Other than when he attempts to squeak along with the other guy.
I mean, the screechy stuff just doesn't sound nice.
Beleive me, not opposed to hearing high notes, and there are some great players that use them in abundance...but the successful ones usually have something going for them in terms of tone and style as a strong foundation first and foremost.

Funny how all the Italian comments seem to favour Silvio's solo.

@jazzcrazy727875299 What are you basing this off of, do you go to all of his performances, or are you just going on what you have seen on youtube

Silvio is a douche. Seriously. That was just some bullshit...he's not even in the same league as wayne. Just an Arturo knock-off.

Even though Silvio have a fuller tone above double C I enjoy wayne's playing better, plus his tone is way cleaner, and I like Wayne's improv.
