I have been looking at all kinds of different flashlights. I have had the 3 volt lithium before and have never been impressed with the cost of replacing batteries. Especially since they die out quickly compared to others. I was at Lowe's today and saw this. I have always used Maglite for my job in Pest Control. Durable, bright and reliable. I thought, why change from what I know for my new EDC bag! Made in the USA, reliable and looks good in my Expedition Fatty!
I have one xl50 and like you said is ver, very cool, i realy love that fashlight.......very long run time and is very bright with 104 lumen. simply perfect for everyday use.
After watching this video I bright the maglite xl50 and man it is well worth the money. Super-bright super long lasting top quality , I work in Security and I would recommend this product to anyone that has the need or want for superior lighting. 10 of 10
I gotta say, the guarantee is holding true to this amazing machine. I'm in the process of testing my xl50. So far it has been on high power for 5 and a half hours now and has only dimmed a little bit. I'm loving it more and more by the day! Can't wait to get an xl200. If this one's super bright, I can't imagine how bright the 200 is!
Great light. I might get one on my next stop to Home Depot. Also, can anyone tell me how Lumens work? Like how to measure them? By the way, I subscribed, I like your videos.
This is probably a long shot but I'll ask anyway: Anyone know to replace the bulbs once they have died in this particular flashlight? Mine hasn't died just yet. I'm just thinking ahead of time. Thanks in advance! (:
@Smasho8000 This is a LED light, and the diode probably has a life expectancy of ~50,000 hours or so. If you use it a lot, several hours every day, perhaps it will only last a couple of decades..
Great review, I have just gotten one of these and already love it. I ended up buying a holster for it due to it's lack of comfort for carry in my jeans, but it is a great light and a fantastic deal for the money.
I just picked one up at Walmart, they work great ! And VERY happy with mine. Didn't even know it had a low and strobe settng until watching this review, thanks Sootch !
@sootch00, Is this same flashlight working well now? I noticed you did this review 10 1/2 months ago and was wondering if the flashlight still works as it did then. Because on this review, I went and bought one today. I've used LEDs before but the bulbs flicker and don't work as they did when they were new. The ones I've used had 6-9 mini bulbs in them. Does the one bulb in this one hold up well? Thanks in advance!
@Smasho8000 In case Sootch is unable to answer, I can. The reason those LEDs in question (with tons of bulbs) failed is because they were extremely cheap, and not high-quality at all (many times, lots of bulbs=cheap). The LED in the Maglite XL50 should do just fine. It gets lots of good reviews.
Good review. I've seen these at Lowes and was considering one of these or perhaps one of the Coast flashlights that they sale at Lowes. Do you know how this compares to the Coasts?
I just bought one of these great little lights for my Beamlokr tactical flashlight mounting system. this is a fine light to have attached your weapon, made in the USA to. Love that.
i brought a brand new maglite xl50 ive noticed mine has a slight yellowish tint in the middle of the spot when aimed at the wall ,it might pick it up on your vid ,is yours like that? or tottally bright white cheers.!
Great video as always.I bought one of these today and am very impressed.I was trying to find out how long it would run on both settings and was happy to see you had a vid on it with all the info I was looking for. Thanks!
I got one 3 weeks ago and it is the best flashlight I have had. I looked and Streamlights,Surefires, and Fenix. Ended up getting this at Walmart while buying ammo
I'm gonna check one out at Home Depot tomorrow. Have to go there anyway for other stuff so I'll check out the light selection too.
I bought a Coast Lenser LED light that looks just like this little Maglite and it is one bright little sucker! I've had it for several years now (also uses three AAA batts) but I could always use another light if it's as good as my older Coast Lenser model.
Years ago Sure-Fire was among the only choice there was. Very expensive and the batteries were too :(
I purchased this light from lowes 2 weeks ago and am very pleased with it. It is just as bright as my g2 led with a cree q5 drop in, lasts almost 3 times as long and has low and strobe. Outstanding review sir!
Does anyone know which is brighter, the XL 50 or the 100? I know that the XL50 is rated higher at a higher lumen rating, but others have said that the XL100 was extremely bright and some thought that it was rated at about 120 lumens
@SoundOut260 Yes I have the XL50 and it is rated a bit higher in the Lumens and it is simple to use for sure.. just be nice to see a comparison between the two. Thanks.
I have a XL100 from about a year and today I buy the Xl 50. For me this are the best light that maglite ever made. I used even under the water a cupel of times and the XL100 still alive so I decide to buy this one because this have the functions I use more. I recommend this two to every one, especially the XL 50 for the person ho want's a simple but powerful light.
I saw this one at the home depot, I was debating myself between this one and a Duracell Daylite, hard choice because you couldn't test neither of them, so I searched it and found your helpful video. So I opted for the maglite. It's $29.99 but I might search ebay to get a diff color. Thanks for the review, very helpful!
I bought this on eBay for $28 dollars. I ripped out the plastic reflector and dropped in an AR coated lens and a collimator lens. They fit snug and now I have an awesome flashlight with a floody beam. Very useful when you first walk into a dark room.
Sorry. Forgot to add that unlike alkaline batteries, lithiums don't leak. That, along with their 10-year shelf life, makes them the best for long-term storage just about anywhere. Especially in a BOB. LED technology advances even faster than computer technology. A recent LED model running on a single CR123 cell can give several hours of runtime on a low setting, while making it seem as though you've got the power of the sun in another setting.
@NGMonocrom The purpose of using a light like this are the batteries are common. Almost every household, store, 2nd hand remote, or toy will have series A batteries. This is the mindset. I think he knows what a lithium battery is... -_-
If you put a high-performance engine intro a tractor-trailer truck, you can't then say that it's not good because you couldn't get 0-60 performance out of it under 5 seconds. Streamlight Scorpion has been obsolete for about 4 years now. Put CR123 cells into a more modern LED light, and you will see a difference.
As for AA and AAA cells, they make those in lithiums as well. Alkies leak. When a flashlight company uses a 3AAA battery-carrier, they cheaped out.
Lithium CR123 cells are indeed expensive. But only from stores. Best way to save money on them is buy online, in bulk, and Made in America cells. Huge savings there. Beware of cheap ones from China that can cause a flashlight to vent with flame.
Any LED flashlight will be brighter and have longer runtime compared to even a quality incandescent light. It's not just the XL50. Lithiums in LED lights will blow an XL50 out of the water.
SOOTCH!!!! You come through again! I have got to get my keester down to Home Depot and get one. I am fond of Maglights(I have 3 so far), and I haven't seen this one yet. Thanks for putting out another great review on a "must have" product. Thanks Brother!!!
i like my mini maglight myslef, not to mention it has high, low, strobe and sos...on another note its good to see a man that loves his country...rock on
I picked one up on your recommendation. So far I'm happy with it. Ill know for sure after some use and see how the battery life goes. Thanks for the review.
I have one of these and I only get less than two hours of light time per set of three Duracell alkaline AAA batteries,.I went through two sets of batteries in no time.
I am disappointed, as I have used Maglites for years and years--the conventional kind. I have written to Maglite about this and am waiting to see what they say.
The reviewer here praises it to the sky--and says he's had it for a few days. Jeez--use it for several weeks--then do your review.
I just picked up a maglite at Walmart last weekend. It's a longer model that fits two AA batteries in series, also with LED. There was a fourth setting that was an S.O.S sequence. Maybe yours has that too? The strobe was a lot slower on mine, which would lead me to believe it might last longer in that mode. It doesn't have the push button though, which would have been nice, but not necessary since the tube is long enough to get a grip to turn. I guess it's necessary on the very short models.
Hey, I like that disco light. Well, actaully I would like find this Maglite too. Really cool that Maglite has included the three different light features in the XL50.. Keep the great videos coming!
thanks for another GREAT review.... i realy like the stobe function. makes for a good self defense tool. i carry a mini mag all the time because they are so durable but im prob making atrip to home depot thiss weekend to upgrade. thanks again for all the great vids.
What I ment to say is Maglite is a great American made product with a good owner who will not ship American Jobs to China! Thanks Sootch00!!!!!! Great Vid!!!
American Made! A champion of free enterprise and U.S.-based manufacturing, Anthony Maglica is the President of Mag Instrument, Inc. and the creator of the Maglite® flashlight, now an icon of classic American design.
Armed with only his talent, his determination and his reverence for hard work, Tony Maglica set out in pursuit of the American Dream when he founded Mag Instrument in 1955. When he went on to design and manufacture a product that revolutionized an industry, he realized that Dream i
An excellent find! thanks for sharing! I just can't bring myself to spend the money for a Fenix, esp since they are foreign made. I hope they make a version with a super low setting that would increase battery life to something ridiculous.
Hey brother I just really got into this whole world of guns, knives... yah know "cool stuff" and I brought my very first folding knife for just a edc but I had to keep it very small because we are not aloud at work to have a knife that could push against the pant fabric and resemble a knife to our clients so I bought this Little Pal Folding Knives. Knife Smooth Blade Length: 3.368 In., 2-1/4 Closed Length: 4.5200 In., 3 Handle Material: Aluminum Overall Length: 7.8880 In., 5-1/4
Glad I subscribed , been wondering why Maglite didnt offer such a light and low and behold there you were with review. Also ,glad you mentioned it being made in the US.
finaly maglight have come to the solution that to turn around the top if the light was bad,20 years ago it was ok, they are back, A button on the back of the flashlight is super, the best flashligt is the one if u can halfway put the button and then relese it. but i dont like the strobe, sometime when i start it it got the strobe when i want i clear light, well thats my opinion...tip, tape the light, then its feel better between your teeth and save battery for u.
i've replaced the the bulb in my mini maglite with the nite ize 3led assembly and added their push button switch on the back too...diggin it but the XL50 is on the list now too!
Before they made flashlights that attached to your guns, me and my friends used to duct tape full size Mag Lights to the barrels of our 22 LR's to rat hunt at the mink yard at night. It worked really well, but these would have been even better.
It's really impressive as to how much light one can get from one of these flashlights, and using very economical AAA alkaline batteries. I am also very impressed with how long the light will last on a single set of batteries. Thanks for the info, I'm a bit late to include one of these on my list to Santa, but less than $30, I think I can splurge!
@sooch00 Yeah the maglite torchies are good, I just picked up a nothere mini maglite 2xaa torch. last 1 lasted me years (from when i was 13 to a month a go) untill resintly that the top cap jammed and the bottom battarie cap jammed as well. The store ware i picked mine up from has the mini maglite led but not the one you just reviewed there. I did get the value pack with the spare lenses, anti-roll cap and the belt holster all for £20.
Merry Christmas , At the last gun show there was a guy from gville that are manufactureing ammo , so I plugged your channel to check out and maybe demo some of it , hope that you don't mind...God bless...
I was planning on buying the Inova X5($34.99, 65 lumen) at academy today but looks like i will get this one, for under $30.00 and over 100 lumen you cant go wrong...thanks Sootch
Another great video Sootch. You seem to be able to find the tactical items of interest to Youtubers. I have watched almost all of your videos and I'm still learning.
The main criticism I levy against the design (not so much Mag lite themselves since many companies make this same design) is that I just don't like the battery cylinder since it is harder to re-load the batteries in the dark. I prefer "in line" batteries in a flashlight and I'm willing to spend the money on Lithium 3v batteries. With current flashlight technology they could have gotten the same performance out of a single AA battery design.
Disco Don hahahahahah good review man....... I didn't know about this light, off to ebay I go..... or amazon lol. I really wanted to use one as a weapon light but I guess not :( I wish it came with a slip or something.
Try the Coleman MAX in 135 lumen. For the money it rocks. Ive had mine for a year and has low watt red lighr for preserving night vision and low watt blue. Mine seems to have a better beam without all the artifacting too. 35 bucks and walmart has started carrying them. It has the same carriage to hold 3 AAA batteries and can be removed to use the lithium batteries.
I can always appreciate a good little flashlight. Especially one with some punch and some features. Made in the USA is more frosting. Thanks for the review Sootch. ~Wolf
Awesome! You don't know how long I've been wondering when Maglite was going to wake up and join the rest of the tactical light market! Sootch, you're on it!
I considered it as a service light but I can't live with the fact that you have to rotate it to switch to find the correct mode. I can't afford to break my concentration by messing with my flashlight.
Yup, that's a Maglite, artifacts & all. I'm sure it doesn't affect performance much, but flashlight aficionados can't wait to point out those black circles & lines once you started turning the head. I think it's a perfectly good light for beginners. Darn it! I can't get all the flashlight snootiness out of my review comments! Aw, I've been spoiled with all the Fenix's & Olights & Nitecores in my life. This looks like a decent performer. Thanks Sootch, & Merry Christmas to you & yours!
Nice review. Does it have a momentary on setting without a delay? I like to have that for home defense but a lot of these multi-click lights have it but you have to push the button for a second the it turns on then you can release to turn off the delay is not good for a home defense light.
Made in the USA.... by Mexicans lol! A company I worked for stamped "Made in the USA" on everything they made but I was one of the few American citizens at the plant. Either way, Great flashlight.

I have the 4sevens quark light. It runs right around $50.00/$60.00, but awesome light. I use it daily, abuse it occasionally and it keeps going. I highly recommend there lights.
But this Streamlight looks like a great deal and an excellent Christmas gift too.
Great price, I just bout two regular Mag lights for 10$ each from black Friday, but know after seeing this review, I'll be heading back tomorrow for this one!
The XL50 has a measured standby drain of 33.1 µA (or 0.0331 mA). A set of brand new alkaline batteries will be completely drained after three years of non-use.
lol Disco? I love Mag lights. I bought an LED bulb for a standard Mag and I have been using that for about 3 yrs now. It,s a great set up. The light quality isn't quite as good but batteries last forever & dont burn out.
Everyone dogs Mag-Lite, but they were about as good as it got flashlight wise for a number of years. They've keeping up with the fancy LED, multi-mode flashlight manufacturers as well--at a reasonable price point, and in the USA. Pretty decent in my book. You can find an even more complicated version of this at your local Target (at least I can) for a few more dollars. I've been eyeballing it myself.
I love maglite. I have a 5 cell that I bought over 20 years ago that I used for security work and other than a few scratches it is in superb condition. It works fine so i went out and bought 2 more and they have both been in use in the house and the car for years now.
American made! you bet! thanks for sharing. Maglite is a great American company with a great history and people running it. they've had to make sacrifices to stay in the US so we should support them.
Those are pretty good run times for just three AAA's. Looks like Mag-lite is trying to keep up with the tactical manufacturers. I guess ol California is technically still considered part of the US.
That is a great little light. I have the xl 100 version and just got the xl50 yesterday. I like the 50 better than the 100 it is simple durable and just plain works. I would put this up against any other light out there for every day use. Like you said, not a gun light unless it is on a very small .22 or BB gun. But overall very respectable little torch.
I have seen this light at the Home Depot, dint pick it up myself. I think it is a medium quality light, which is good for its cost. Thanks for the video now
I just traded an old holster for one.

@aaronscrewme
NGMonocrom 11 months ago
Surprising amount of misinformation in this vid.

No lanyard? Do any small flashlights have a lanyard hole large enough for a strand of paracord?

Knife Smooth Blade Length: 3.368 In., 2-1/4 Closed Length: 4.5200 In., 3 Handle Material: Aluminum Overall Length: 7.8880 In., 5-1/4

finaly maglight have come to the solution that to turn around the top if the light was bad,20 years ago it was ok, they are back, A button on the back of the flashlight is super, the best flashligt is the one if u can halfway put the button and then relese it. but i dont like the strobe, sometime when i start it it got the strobe when i want i clear light, well thats my opinion...tip, tape the light, then its feel better between your teeth and save battery for u.

The store ware i picked mine up from has the mini maglite led but not the one you just reviewed there. I did get the value pack with the spare lenses, anti-roll cap and the belt holster all for £20.

Mag Lite seems to always be behind the pack now.

I considered it as a service light but I can't live with the fact that you have to rotate it to switch to find the correct mode. I can't afford to break my concentration by messing with my flashlight.
Angyal269 1 year ago

I've been eyeballing it myself.

captaintlc 1 year ago
That is a great little light. I have the xl 100 version and just got the xl50 yesterday. I like the 50 better than the 100 it is simple durable and just plain works. I would put this up against any other light out there for every day use. Like you said, not a gun light unless it is on a very small .22 or BB gun. But overall very respectable little torch.
