As for Prince holding the name The Time hostage, I'm not surprised. In exchange for using the name, that also meant that Prince would commandeer the project and take over everything to the point the fellas wouldn't even be playing their own music. It was understood The Time's debut was Prince and Morris Day because the band was still being formed, but he continued performing and writing most to all the songs on the next three albums out of his paranoia to control the band.

Jam and Lewis were much more successful than they ever were with The Time; you can argue they had as much success as producers and Prince has had as a solo artist. Also, Jesse Johnson and Morris Day had solo careers and Monte Moir and Jellybean Johnson have produced songs for people.

Prince continued to write and produce the band's material, even though they were a self-contained act because they were becoming popular on their own. Firing Jam and Lewis was a control mechanism. In order to use the name, Prince required that he wrote their songs and they had to get his OK on everything. When the fellas want to reform independently, Prince exerted his control freak tendencies again.

But what he did to The Time, I don't understand. I keep thinking of him as a soul at peace with himself and God, yet he has to know that this action actually hurts his friends and not helps.
