First,"Ben hur" is the BEST Roman Empire film of ALL time.Simply because it has the message of salvation, and "Spartacus" dose't.If we were judging on who was better looking,Charton Heston or Tony Curtis(antonivis)it would be Tony Curtis in Spartacus.:)
Also,"The Fall of the Roman Empire" was better than "The Robe".The Robe had the truth and joy of the mesage of Christ, but Richard burrton is not nearly as handsome as Stephen Boyd in the fall of the roman empire.
William Wyler's film of Ben-Hur, despite some weakness, has to be the pinnacle of ancient epics produced in Holliywood. The Fall of the Roman Empire should have been as good, if not better, but failed to deliver. Sparticus had too many boring scenes, the other 2 are entertaining but not to be compared to Ben-Hur.
The reason "The Fall of The Roman Empire failed to deliver is this:No book except for the Bible had evr been so widley read in the case of "Ben Hur".It was astory of people who were more than just fiction to us.We came to love and cherish them, and they were even more brillent on screen. It captured the hearts of viewers, and brought all of Hollwood to it's knees. The cast was exelent.Ben Hur tells of redemtion and God's love, and The Savior.Ben Hur:A Tale of The Christ,
Good Choices. I particularly agreed with your number 1 choice. It also demonstrates how awful modern films are at depicting Ancient Rome (Gladiator aside).
all the other choices are good, but what is barrabas doing here?! i thought that movie was very boring! the only interesting part was the crucifixion where they got footage of a real eclipse.
I saw a few of these Roman movies when I was a kid in the early 60s, and I am sure I must have seen european films dubbed in English, as none of those films has ever come to the surface.
I remember one scene where the good guy has to fight (on horseback) 2 other romans, and end up in a forest battling it out.
Another I just remember where some kind of cyclops is in a pit!!!
Probably Italian or Spanish films, and probably I will never see again.
Nice job csnc82. I've seen all of the movies you included. Some I've seen 4 or 5 times and others I've seen portions of but never sat down and watched the whole film. One thing most of these films have in common is they are pretty lengthy. I'm not sure Caligula should have been on the list...........not because it isn't interesting but a tad below the quality of the others. Well done.
Just saw Spartacus. Not a big fan of that movie. Kirk Douglas hardly acted at all and the music score did not fit, imo. L.O. was great as always, though.
I was dissapointed to see that "Julius Caesar" with Marlon Brando was not on this list. It is by far the best film adaptation of Shakespeare's play ever made, and Brando's portrayal of Marcus Antonius is one of his greatest performances.
What's the purpose here. To showcase Glass's music (which has nothing to do with these movies) I presume cause it certainly doesn't do the films justice.
Not sure I agree with this. I think it works rather well - a sort of modernist epic soundtrack to silent movie versions of these swords and sandals classics.
Yeah, Fall of the Roman Empire was a good one, you can't beat the old classics, they didn't cheat with computers back then, they had to hire literally thousands of stand-ins to do films and they used huge sets. Now we cheap-up on movies. They look good, but they don't looks as good as the real thing in my view. I remember the Robe as well, lots of god movies back then.
All those Hollywood productions from the 50's & 60's are splendorous, but one movie I would recomend for Roman Empire lovers is the BBC series I Claudius Emperor or the newest HBO production named Rome!!!
Ben Hur is more beautiful than Spartacus (also for the music score). I prefer Charlos Heston on Douglas...Heston is more beautiful and strong.
But the top film about the roman empire is The Gladiator, maybe because is more realistic than '50/'60 film (anyway...they are better than fucking shit films which make today).
Here my list (provvisory):
1)The Gladiator
2)Ben Hur
3)Spartacus
4)QVO VADIS
5)The Robe
6)The Last Legion (new...but very affilictive! Isn't follow the history reality!)

The fact that one of the greatest films about the Roman Empire (TITUS - with Anthony Hopkins) is not on this list tells me you haven't seen it...
Though it may be done with a modern twist to Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus, it is an incredibly profound piece of art that tells an amazing story...

Spartacus - Kubrick's best film, because he merely directed it rather than having any input on the script.
