I have nothing against the biblical imagery in this song, but to me, that's not what makes it at all. It is that beautiful, beautiful melody, the sort of ramshackle instrumentation and the end part "lost in the clouds, have no fear, we draw near".
Sufjan, being possibly my favorite musician, is an open Christian. Yet, he makes it clear that he does not make overt Christian music. He is not a "Christian Artist" but simply an Artist that happens to be Christian.
That said, my beliefs aside, Seven Swans is my favorite album of his and yet it is his only overtly Christian album (he denies this, lol).
Curious tho, how do athiests rationalize the First Law of Thermodynamics - Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only transform?
I'm not a Damnationist, but a Universalist, so if you're an athiest reading this, you'll be alright ,as will be the christians - eventually, you'll attain immortality whether in this incarnation or in another somewhere in the decamillenniums.
@JuantheFaun I reread my post and can see why you misunderstood my information and thinking I am an atheist which I am not. I apologize for my failure to communicate more clearly.
jesus is not any religion, he's a man standing for love. he's innerlight in life difficulties and nice moments of share with anyone we love. he's the little boy we forgot and his father in adult age try to remind us...and if we remind the little boy heart of dream and hope, we can be good fathers
im atheist, and i really like this song. it has a very nice melody and superb lyrics. i dont know what you guys think us atheists do, but we arnt douche-bag assholes. we just well, don't really give a shit if there is a god or not. and we think there isnt because of the facts available to us at the present moment
great song though, not like other christian songs that just say "i love Jesus" over and over and over again.
and @alleyhse dont be an ass, this is a song, not a debate form/thread
@spazmasster5000 My husband and I are atheists too, we both really like this song. I don't usually find any strictly religious songs that are very good. Most are kind of awkward and blatant with a strong message in mind. This one is quite beautiful and a pretty story.
And I have to agree with the reasoning you said, that is why we are too.
Christians who are musical artists are normally not Bible teachers but so many people are trying to squeeze some mystical meaning out of their lyrics it is amazing. Atheists are constant skeptics of Christianity since research reveals that over 80% of Christians are Bible illiterates and cannot defend their faith. Atheists have never had it so easy as right now! 51% of Protestant pastors/ministers do not even believe in God much less the revelation of scripture found in the Bible. Church = FAIL
@alleyhse What evidence is there that Atheism is true? Oh wait, = fail. This album was made with Relgious themes (like most of Sufjan Steven's albums) so to say that people are squeezing the meaning of lyrics is silly. For this song and album at least. It does occur. Haha, 80%? I bet 80% of the population on the united states says they are Christian. They say they are, It's about living, taking action in the belief. Atheism is believing in believing in nothing.
@alleyhse Easy there tiger, YouTube isn't the place for this. Although I'd agree with you, the majority of Christians don't know why they are what they are.
i watched this skate video and it said the song was this song but it was different. so i f anyone knows the other song reply. this song is still amazing though
I only recently heard of Sufjan Stevens but am quite impressed with some of his more Christian-themed work. Of his work, I have specially been drawn to this particular song. I'm not sure if this song was intentionally meant to be used in worship but so easily while listening am I "lost in the cloud" in the glory of Christ Jesus as I vainly attempt to imagine the sight seen by the few present. Oh what a great place to be, lost in the cloud of the glory of God!

What an excellent video. I love the idea of using religious art. Wonderful. Did you put this together yourself? Well done.

The David Crowder* Band Cover of this song is absolutely amazing. I give credit to Sufjan Stevens, but DCB's is awesome.

@fearsomestmoocow the biblical resonance is what makes this song. if you cant understand that...you've missed the song

@kalindoscopy As an art student I can appreciate it. As an athiest I can still be cynical of it.

@fearsomestmoocow The beauty of truth! As an art student one can appreciate it. As an athiest one can ignore it... for a little while.

@kalindoscopy Not really. I think this song's an absolute work of art and I'm an atheist.

He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God; Many will see and fear And will trust in the LORD.

There's a melody in the middle which sounds like one in Chicago; it's cool to see how he can influence himself like that :)
