Nicely played, but It would be great if these could break out of that joggy sort of rythymn into a reelly reely one, for the second one. Please let me know if I'm being silly, or it's not the done thing - or whatever.
@bertwindon The tunes they're playing are slides (12/8 rhythm) , not reels, so they don't play in a "reely" (4/4) rhythm.
It would be technically possible to follow a slide with a reel, but I've never heard it done. I'd need to look at some Irish Set Dancing books to tell you how common it is to follow a slide with a Reel.
@Milner Well thanks for that !. Guess what, I've been trying to play all sorts of tunes for 30 ?! years or so, and I never really understood what a "Slide" is. Can you point to an example of a "Slip-jig". I might have one, but I'm not sure.
Well More thanks for that. No-one has ever been able to put me straight on that. I know The Butterfly" and of course "The rocky road .." is the same odd rythm.
now i was listening to this soooo many times, i cant say how often. i want to say thank you. to this two fidlers for their very great music and the guy, who uploaded the video!! thank you!!! your song made many of my days happier! :) very great sound!
wow u guys are awesome i play violin so i hope i can be as good as u i am gonna practice these songs soooo much o and have u tried blue grass ball can play but it needs some work
You can find the first 2 slides in Matt Cranitch's fiddle tutorial, "The Irish Fiddle Book: The Art of Traditional Fiddle-Playing". It is available on Amazon.
This is great. I love old talented fogies that are really passionate about folk. The problem is there aren't enough of us young ones carrying on the tradition. How many teenagers do you see playing Irish folk?
Well im a 16 year old heavy metal rocker who plays in a rock band and solo's, but i love kicking back with the acoustic and playing some Irish jigs and reels
The chap in the foreground is my good friend Seamus Creagh from Cork. He regularly comes over to Brittany and treats us to his great music. The second fiddler might be Matt Cranitch. Thanks a lot for this video.
no percussion in irish music unless u r referring to a boaron, which is not so much percussion as much as another instrument, also considering this is a polka a boaron wouldn't sound good at all.....
County Clare where I come from is renowned for musicians like these. Every County has it's own individual style. That was really sweet though.....Bualadh Bos
hello preaty nice job on it. Just a question, i been seeking a fiddle song but i don't remember exactly the mame of it, it is something like "in memory of Harvey Mc..... ' . Do you know what is it?
If you would like to learn the fiddle you might try "The Irish Fiddle Book" by Matt Cranitch, (playing on the left). I have found it very helpful, particularly in the bowing.
What is the name of the third tune that Matt and Seamus are playing?
banjodeluxe, if you want to learn violin, then get a teacher. I really suggest you that, or else you will learn false techniques, and end up not able to play everything on it. I play Irish folk myself on violin, and if I didn't had basics, it would be very hard for me.
just got told to stop tapping my feet by me misses in the other room!!! grrr laminated flooring, this is great i love this music and could listen to it all day long
I had a question, I'm 15 and starting to play violin; how does he hold the instrument out in front of him like that? doesn't he need to support it with his shoulder so that he can move his left hand up and down? just wondering, thanks
ummm, his shoulder ISSSS supporting the violin, he's just using his shoulder REST to make it more comfortable, in case u didnt have one, look closely and u can see it
physically a fiddle and violin are the same, but fiddle is more a STYLE of music such as celtic and bluegrass, while a violin is usually refering to classical music
This is commonly true. However, there are instruments that are now made specifically for fiddle playing as the technique involved is different from classical violin. An example would be the action of the strings or the angle of the bridge.
Whew! Amazing set. Several people have identified the first two slides (Denis Murphy's and the Brosna). The last slide is Where is the Cat? or Hush the Cat. (or about 8 other names)
Great stuff from the Kerry fiddle tradition. Really enjoyed this. The first tune is indeed Denis Murphy's, the second one I know as The Brosna but not sure of the third.

The most famous slip-jig is probably "Rocky Road to Dublin". "The Butterfly" is another popular one. Slip jigs are 9/8, "regular" jigs are 6/8.
