Watch the video on here called Wendell Scott: A Race Story, it is 49:38 long but it is a fascinating look and a great GREAT man that froever has my respect.
I was a racecar driver myself and of all cars I raced was something Wendall would have felt at home in. It was a 1967 Ford Fairlane. I myself suffered injuries after a flip and roll on to a concrete retaining wall. Now I would like nothing more to restore a racecar once driven by Wendall to give back to the sport we both loved dearly. I would restore the car to the condition Wendall first drove it out the first time. Just a little to give back to the sport. The 34# and his name for all to enjoy.
@McCall72 Most likely Bobby Allison was running a Malibu. A chevelle didn't did run, but was only a Monte Carlo or Malibu. Laguna didn't run until the next year.
Sixty cars were running in that one race and nobody knew the Big One was coming.
@Reddaytonadog : In this race Tiny Lund with his 26 car was dead. 'The greatest Driver in heigth and weigth and very sucessfully Sportman Driver and Daytona 500 winner died in his car... R.I.P. 'Tiny Lund 1929-1975
@samothsamothsamoth Tiny didn't get killed until 1975.. Larry Smith was the one killed in this race, right after the race resumed after cleaning up this wreck. They probably didn't clean it good enough...
Funny, I watched Mr. Scott describe how he was knocked out and his leg was broken in 7 places, not to mention his arm. And having gone into debt to purchase what he called the best car he'd ever driven - 9 years to pay it off. To think after all that man when through to race no other "minority" has even come close to matching what he was able to accomplish in the face of BLATANT racism. At least they showed the 34 being dragged outta there.
Nascar would frigging shut down and have all kinds of investigations and a congressional hearing if that shit happened nowadays, Pussies, They just broke out the hammers , pounded the sheetmetal out and kept getting it if the car still rolled.
There was a 37-car pileup during the Sportsmans' race at Daytona in 1960... just as bad as this one. However this would be probably the biggest wreck in Cup History.
wendell definitely did not walk away from this wreck, his leg was torn wide open. announcers back then, in the height of the civil rights era, tended to ignore Wendell Scott due to his black skin. if only Wendell had come along a decade later, he would have been a champion. RIP
I guess that's what they meant when they said "several drivers suffered lacerations"...I live not far from Wendell's hometown (Danville, VA). It would be hard to imagine what he had to deal with, not just as an Independent (owner/driver), but with the racial issues in the '50's, 60's and 70's.
around the time of this video, nascar was starting to come around... if only wendell had just come along a couple years before this, he would have dealt with racism, but he would have gotten the amazing skills he had from driving inferior equipment competitively, and then he would have gotten a shot in a good car i think...he really could have been something huge
Correct. That's his car (#34) with the drivers side knocked in at 1:59 in the video. He had life-threatening and career ending injuries, so I don't exactly think he "walked away" from the wreck.
Yeah, this race ended Wendell's career. His car was #34 at the end that had the side torn out of it. Great racer that got the shaft from most people.

NR2003Wrecker 1 month ago
@NR2003Wrecker I don't know - but pretty much all the cars involved were absolutely demolished.

I heard that Bobby Allison had two cars drive over him as he was trying to avoid the crash.

1:37 is not a Monte Carlo. Interesting that Chevrolet did have 3 different makes in this race in a Chevelle, Monte Carlo and a Laguna....

@mintedllama Larry Smith didn't die in this race. This is the spring Winston 500. Larry was killed in the summer Talladega 500.

@anthonystuart69 Richard Petty actually made Wendells sons stop heading towards the accident because Richard thought Wendell was dead.
