  • Just the title and content of this shows a huge lack of understanding. Pirates aren't competing against greens, or anyone else. There's nothing in the pirate platform that contradicts the greens platforms, hence this is why you see candidates running for office that are both Green Party AND Pirate Party. You can be BOTH. You could also be a Pirate/Democrat, or even Pirate/Communist or anything else. So seriously, get off your high horse.

  • We need to demand proportional representation in Canada!!!!!

  • As a recently new member of the Pirate Party of Canada, I'm happy to know how the green party feels about copy right laws and I'm sure there could be some co-operation if both parties had seats in parliament.

  • The gay president elected in the region Puglia, considered a consevative and catholic region of the South of Italy, Nichi Vendola, have shocked Italy. The party created by youngs is called Left Ecology and freedom and it was sponosred with facebook!

  • I think that would be awesome that Canada would be a Pirate Nation. haha I might just vote for these guys.

  • This fat lady is about to fall down and pass out. I don't trust her to fight for anything and win.

Canada now has a Pirate party so wooo they are spreading.

  • the Canadian pirate party is running and gaining support

i like the green party, although Elizabeth May "pfft we dont need her we have better"

  • WOO!! every time I hear her i love her evens more, she talkes down right sence to issues that matter in todays world, not discussing issues that should have been solved 100 years ago. and she KNOWS that some stuff that is currently taboo'd can make for great improvements down the road, unfourtunatly she doesn't look like a leader though.. she could use a person to act as a puppet and does what she sais..

  • Good luck Elizabeth, us Pirates will REALLY protect our Canadian rights! ARR!

  • It's fantastic that the Green Party supports patent and copyright reform, but I'm not sure I agree that there's no need for a Canadian Pirate Party. A single-issue party may not be able to elect a member, but they can definitely raise public awareness of the issue - if it hadn't been for all the recent talk about a Canadian Pirate Party, would we have had this video?

  • True. Canadians talking about their own Pirate Party brought the question to my mind quicker than news about Sweden. I've signed up on the Pirate Party forum to see what's going on. It is quite possible if any sane-copyright educational material is created by either party, it could be leveraged by either party. The first-past-the-post concerns only become an issue if both parties are running candidates in a single riding. Hopefully there's be communication around that.

  • May is quite right. A party in Canada dedicated solely to copyright and, presumably, patent reform would not be a very effective direction in our current electoral system. Such a narrowly focused party would, unfortunately, have basically no chance of getting anyone even close to elected. Look at how the Greens, a broad-based party with about as many votes nationally as the Bloc Quebecois, have been kept out so far.

  • GrantNeufeld, the Greens know it's not just about getting elected. Every vote that goes to the Green Party or Pirate Party (or some other issue-focussed party) is really a vote that is available for the big parties, if they merely copy the smaller platform into their own. Given the perpetual minority we're in, this makes even fledgling parties powerful.

  • The Canadian Green Party is more centerist than European Greens, more mainstream and realistic than U.S. greens garnering and garner about 7% of the vote.

The leader Elizabeth May is both and enviromental lawyer and ex president of the Sierra Club in Canada.
