I love the black molly very easy to breed a little pain to keep them all healthy because of so much inbreeding but worth the effort. Some of the sailfin molly are woderfull to look at/
@chowdershow2010 the easy way to describe how to tell males & females is males have fins under their belly in the shape of a spike, where as the female has 1 in the shape of a fan. this is the same with all livebearers like platy, guppy etc. Some are more easy to tell apart like swordtails because with the lads spike shaped fin under his belly he also has a long spike that will grow from the end of his fin as he grows older
I found 1 baby Molly in my tank! I'm already expecting the rest to die because.. I have about 15 other fish in the tank, along with 2 crabs, and 2 turtles!
I'M SO FRUSTRATED =( MY MOLLY HAD BABIES 5 DAYS AGO SO I GOT SOME FLOATING PLANTS FOR THEM TO HIDE, I DON'T KNOW IF THE PLANTS WERE INFECTED WITH PARASITES OR WHAT, BUT ALL MY FISH GOT WHITE SPOTS NOW, EVEN THE BABIES AND IS HEARTH BROKEN BECAUSE I SEE THEM HITTING THEIR BODY AGAINST THE PLANTS AND I KNOW THEY ARE INFECTED TOO...DO YOU THINK THEY'LL SURVIVE THE TREATMENT? I HAVE TO WAIT UNTILL TOMORROW TO BUY THE MED CAUSE I JUST NOTICED IT AND ITS LATE... I DON'T WANT TO GIVE UP ON THEM =(
@Francheska7778 Buy a breeding trap thingy. I think they are about $10. They float in the tank and they make it so mama can't get to the babies and eat them.
So cool that you were able to catch this, but I have a question.
A while back I had about four to five different Molly's of various colors in a 10 gallon tank, & didn't know they were able to give live birth until it was happening. At that point, while we watched her, it was too late to save any more than two babies, which was very upsetting because we had to watch the mother take the babies into her mouth alive and then spit them out dead. :(
Do you think she mistook the babies for food or??
i feel so bad =/ i bought a silver mollie a couple days ago and it turns out she was pregnant and had babies in the main tank and i no ur suspose to seperate the momma from the babies and away from any power filters :( poor babies but i saved atleast 35 :) to be honest i didnt even no my silver mollie was a girl xD
Nice job catching this rare moment. Ive had tanks for years and have only managed to see this a few times. Very good job capturing this and thanks for sharing!
@keely010 Saw ur video dont seems molly is ready to deliver. few things to note is that the belly will grow extra large which will look like its going to blast also you would start seeing white spot at the end of belly. If you want you can put her in breeding trap when u start seeing the white spot grow.
@adorabIeangeI yes i knw you have to be lucky to catch that moment :) I was very much addicted to my fish so she was in my bed room and I used to watch her 24x7 it was first time for me too so was super exited too :)
wow.. i didnt know that mollies are live bearers! i bought 2 black mollies..after a month, it gave birth to 7 fries.. a week later, i found another 8! after two weeks, i got 13! luckily all of them survived but are still fries :)
My grandfather got 6 guppies about 2 months ago, and the one guy was getting fat. Then one day like 3 died and about 2 days Later Him and my Grandmother go to work and there were 5 babies in the tank then 15 the next week xD
@archrom1 you should put her in a breeder...as soon as she is done giving birth release her,,,than let the fry gety bigger than release them...the female might eat her young if she feals harmed...so dont frighten her,,,i recomend getting the breeder tank with holes on the bottom that are going to a separate tank...so they are all separate.
My Dalmation Lyretail Mollie (I had a pair but my one Female died to a unknown cause) had 9 Babies within the first month I had them. I only found 9 in my tank (and still have all 9!). You are very lucky to have 40+ Fry. I'm waiting for the fry to get bigger (the biggest one is close to a Inch now) so I can get a pair or 2 more.
i just got 4 on the 11-3-10. 2 black molly's and 2 white fishes but the white ones aren't molly's. one of my molly gave birth right after the day i got her they are so cute .she gave birth in 11-4-10
WOW, that's a lot of fry! I am starting to breed mollies in a seperate breeding tank now. I usually just end up with fry in my community tank and I usually only get 4-8 that live! Congrats!
@webkinzandcpfan1: white thing is actually the inside part of her belly which opens due to growth of fry in fish's womb. Thats the place the fry are going to come out of her mother. Best of luck for new experience :)
males have one fin at the bottom while females have two fins at the bottom i believe thats it cause i read it on a website and a lady at the local pet shop where i bought mine yesterday i askd for both a male and female and one has one fin on bottom and another has two fins on the bottomm :]
@socerlover788 normally u can see the bulge 2 weeks before they delivery the fry's. Just keep the finger cross and keep the mother in breeding tank as soon as u see the white spot at the bottom of belly.
@JTagape Just keep the baby in diff container of clear glass and if possible feed them brine shrimp or powder flakes make sure u change the water max 50% so that there is not uneaten food left to contaminate water. Also keep the temp constant.
OH NO. I just bought 3 mollies. I asked for all males. I've had them 3 weeks now and TWO of them having bulging tummies...I SPECIFICALLY asked for males but something tells me these two are mommies...OH MY BOB>how many babies do they have??? @ursojealous11 I think they were skinny. I don't recall there being a bulge there when they were @ that store. Nor do I recall bulges after i put them in the tank. I think these bulges have developed since they've been with me.
i recently purchased 1 male and 2 female mollies to share a 10 gallon tank with a betta but one of the mollies (female) always picks on the other two she won't go near the betta because she's terrefied of him but she's always nipping at the other 2 any advice on what i can do???
Keep that mollie out for 2-3 days and then reintroduce her. If the nipping is really a big problem like the fins are shredding. Are the mollies of same size ?

@TheNinjacat10 No, mollies will peck at the goldfish's slimy coating which will eventually kill the goldfish. I would advise not combining them.

Mollies when pregnant will exhibit a fatter body around the belly area, and usually right before birthing , their bellies will look like a rectangle outline on the bottom instead of rounded. \____/
In addition, there is sometimes a white spot at the anal opening to indicate her birthing canal is opening up. (but not always and sometimes hard to see due to coloring of the fish itself
