@ironicjustice Actually, they do represent what dunnerandashow said: if I'm not mistaken it was Riker, in an early TNG episode, who described Ferengi as the worst side of captalism and used the term Yankee Traders...
Really, what's so great about Armin and the character Quark was taking a completely stereotyped, comic relief alien race and giving them a humanity. DS9 really did what no other Trek did in not making it "ooh, space monsters" and made it personal and political. Such an awesome ensemble cast, and Mr. Shimerman was such a central unifying actor to it all.
Mr ZImmerman came to a con in maryland because someone backed out. We were really happy to get him but he had never done a con. We all giggled alot becuase there is so much of Zimmerman in quark.
Dr. Nefarious, lol. This guy does great voice work. Very versatile voice actor. He could be right up there with Steven Blum, Clancy Brown and Mark Hamill.
@milo1ss I agree. just finished watching all class -> tng -> ds9 by now. the next some weeks ill be occupied with voyager, but then its over :( once more
As a body of work Star Trek has some good bits when the limits are pushed and some bad bits where, frankly they took the money and run. The Ferengi are one of the good bits on a par with the doctor from voyager. This guys performances in DS9, even when the script is week, are some of the best in Star Trek.
@tina6581 The Doctor had ok moments, but toward the end, he got so WHINY and annoying with him "blah blah rights" bulshit. I especially recall the Season 6 ep Virtuoso to be particularly painful to watch. Combine that with the fact that he got so much more screentime than everyone but 7 and Janeway, and he got really old really fast.
Quark, and almost everything about DS9, was amazing though.
although i will say DS9 crew was quite bad to be honest, apart from quark the hot terry farrell jadzia dax and of course the legend worf, but the rest werent tht gd imo odo was OK found his character a bit boring though
at first all i ever kinda liked was next gen and voyager, voyager because tht was like the time for me when i started gettin into star trek voyager was on and then next gen because the crew was good you know worf data that smoking hot deanna troi pure milf and of course voyager well... i liked the doctor and neelix sometimes but arrrhhh seven of nine in that nice outfit i loved it but i caught DS9 on bout a year ago, n saw quark in an episode n i realised what id been missing out on
I watched Armin Shimerman and he always seemed to play very hollow and condesending characters. Now seeing these interviews I have a greater respect for him and his talent.
Quark and for that matter Garak are the most interesting characters in DS9. This is because they not bound to the altruistic conscience most of the other characters have to abide by. I really enjoy the episodes when they are featured.
I enjoyed that show so much and felt that there were still more episodes that could have been filmed. Armin was outstanding as Quark. Helped take the show to such a deeper level. I think one of the best "Quark" episodes was when he and several other Ferengi had to rescue his mother "Moogie" from the Cardasians. Well done episode.
Armin Shimerman was a normal guy but "A Ferengi without profit is no Ferengi at all" rule of acquistion 18 so he had to "Whisper your way to success" rule 168 and he got the part of Quark! MAJOR respect to you my friend I really liked your acting!!!!!!! you made DS9 great!
Quark is my absolute favorite character, largely thanks to Armin Shimerman's fabulous acting. When watching the show, I sometimes forget that Quark and the other Ferengi aren't real people!
@albinoshira Hahaha I was explaining the same thing to a friend of mine the other day. Sometimes when I watch Star Trek I feel like I'm just observing events that have actually happened.
@InformationPollution Haha, that's funny. Yes, we could think of Star Trek as a historical document or something of that sort! Many of the actors are very convincing in my opinion, particularly Quark + the Ferengi and Worf.
Armin Shimerman is the quintessential Ferengi. He single handedly transformed the Ferengi from a D-List, goof-ball, phony race into a realistic, geniune, believable race. Whenever I go back and watch a Deep Spcae Nine episode now Quark steals every scene he's in. And, the episodes that he plays a major role in seem to be the best ones.
@LtTaco He did a superb job in Bioshock, he sounds nothing like Andrew Ryan, so to create such a totally different voice, and give it such emotion and power is deeply impressive.
When the going gets though Quark becomes a hero, just like Armin Shimerman. Quark/Armin saved the DS9 in the 3rd season with The House of Quark and in the 4th season with Little Green Men.
Quark- You are hereby informed by Gelec-Ti that your indebtedness to His Shadows Empire has reached a critical point. Re-payment is no longer an option. I therefore inform you that pursuant to His Shadow's Devine Laws you are to be executed and your body retrieved , subsequently to be surrendered to the protein bank.
Stories like this make me happy! Not only was this guy perfect as Quark, but knowing how much he wanted the role and how much he loved Star Trek is just...awesome. :)
None else could have made Quark 'Quark' but Armin Shimerman! I started liking Star Trek BECAUSE of Quark, even after watching TNG and Voyager. Quark is perfect! =)
