From the storyline that I've read, the locking sounds you hear is Dr Maxis' assisstant locking Dr Maxis and his daughter in a room with the first hellhound, which was Dr Maxis' dog and put it into the teleporter after finding that the zombies are unable to teleport... however, the dog turned into a hell hound and teleported out randomly out of the bolts of lightning you see in game. This dog was also pregnant during the transformation, resulting in the other hellhounds. Hope this helped : )
