Jack was one of the true great 5-string players until his untimely death in 2008. I worked with him a lot and was on the road with him, What a character.
I meant to say, "Clark Kessinger did a fine" fired up" version of Billy In the lowground" was the reason I took to the song in the first place, but this is the smoothest I've seen on the Tube, Simpkins makes it look easy, Byron Berline has a nice of cover too, i also like the bit of "weight in the attack" the banjo and mandolin plyrs put on it as well....
From one fiddle player to another: That's the way to go right there, bro: simple, tasteful, not over the top, but unique, elegant, interesting, and VERY pleasing to the ears. Quality not quantity makes the BEST fiddlin'. Right on, man. =D
I agree with your assessment, the only difference in opinion is what type of 'quality'. Straight Eighth bowing is where its at and their is hardly anyone that can do that.
Oh, yes. There's no doubt about that. I think what happened is that ppl don't look to see what kind of piece it is. There are different (but traditionally specific) bowing styles that go with all the different fiddle tune types. Not everything should bounce! lol "Billy" is a reel, and as such, reels should actually be played with the straight 8ths.
